Capt. George Schumacher

In Philippines

Of all the chaplains from the Sioux City diocese now in active service, Capt. George Schumacher was the first to join the armed forces. He is attached to a hospital unit in the Philippines and it was there he was met by Rev. John R. Doherty, who recently visited Rev. John Brady at North Riverside. Capt. Schumacher was ordained May 3, 1938. He served as a young priest at Alton, Halbur, St. Benedict and Mallard, all in Sioux City diocese and for awhile was chaplain at St. Joseph’s hospital and chaplain at Briar Cliff college in Sioux City. Early in 1942 he became an army chaplain.
