Local Man Wins Oak Leaf Cluster
An Associated Press dispatch Friday morning stated that Lt. Walter C. Schmidt of Council Bluffs had been awarded the Oak Leaf cluster on an air medal for heroism in aerial attacks on the Gilbert islands, when the islands were wrested from the Japanese in November. The dispatch, however, gave no indication of Lt. Schmidt’s address here and attempts to locate his relatives proved unsuccessful.
