“Missing” Man Returns to Outfit

Lt. Leighton S. Saltsgaver, reported missing in action in Belgium since Dec. 20, has returned to duty with his original outfit. In a letter to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Saltsgaver, 161 Fourteenth avenue, the anti-tank company lieutenant told of nine day’s isolation from his men. The letter is full of interesting accounts of hand to hand encounters with the enemy during the period he was missing.

Wearer of the purple heart for wounds received in France last Aug. 12, Saltsgaver was hospitalized in England until he rejoined a combat unit Nov. 14. He is now with company L, 110th infantry in Belgium.

Lt. Saltsgaver entered the army in February, 1941, leaving Council Bluffs with the Iowa National Guard, and went to England the following May.
