Receive Word of Death of Son

Mr. and Mrs. William A. Peterson, 710 First avenue, have received word from the war department that their son, Tech 5/g Harry E. Peterson, was killed in action in France.

Overseas for the last six months, Tech. Peterson went to France on D-day and was serving with the 90th division at the time of his death.

He received his basic training in the army at Fort Riley, Kan., was then sent to California, Arizona, and several other western states for specialized training before going overseas.

The Petersons have another son, Earl Roy Peterson, a naval aviation machinist mate 2/c, who has been in England since June, 1943.

Tech. 5/g Harry E. Peterson was killed in action in France, according to a war department announcement received this week by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William A. Peterson.

MEMORIAL SERVICES

Memorial services will be held for Harry E. Peterson, Tech 5/g, who was killed in action Aug. 3, in France, Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Gospel Tabernacle, 21 North Eighth street. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. William A. Peterson. The Rev. Phillip Johnson will lead the services.

Receive Purple Heart for Son

Mr. and Mrs. William A. Peterson, 1012 Third avenue, have received the purple heart posthumously awarded their son, Tech 5/g Harry E. Peterson. Cpl. Peterson was killed in action in France on Aug. 3. He had been overseas six months and was among the invading forces of France on D-day. He was serving with the 90th division.

Tec. 5/g Peterson received his basic training in the army at Fort Riley, Kan., was then sent to California and other western states for further training.

RETURN BODIES OF BLUFFS MEN
SOLDIER DEAD FROM EUROPE TO NEW YORK

NEW YORK, AP – The army transport Lawrence Victory, carrying the bodies of 4,183 Americans who died in world war ii, is scheduled to dock at the Brooklyn army base at 8 p.m. (CST) Friday.

Bodies of two Council Bluffs soldiers, Pfc. Glenn O. Vernon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter C. Vernon 3301 Avenue A, and Tech 5-g Harry E. Peterson, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Albert Peterson, 710 First avenue, are being returned to the United States from Europe.

They are among 4,183 Americans being returned on the transport Lawrence Victory, the department of the army announced Thursday. Arrival of the vessel will be announced by the New York port of embarkation.

Overseas Six Months.

Woodring’s funeral home will handle the Peterson services. Born in North Dakota, Harry Peterson lived most of his life in Council Bluffs. He was a painter by trade. He was killed in action in France on Aug. 3, 1944 after serving overseas six months. With the 90th infantry division, Cpl. Peterson made the landing in France on D-day.

Surviving are his parents; a brother, Sgt. Earl Roy Peterson of Roswell, N. M.; and three sons, all living in California.

Full military rites will be accorded T. 5/g Harry E. Peterson, 40, who was killed in action in France in 1944, at services Tuesday at 2 p. m. at Woodring’s chapel. The rev. Fred Freeland will officiate. Veterans of Foreign Wars post No. 737 will form an honor guard at the chapel and conduct rites at Garner township cemetery.

Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William A. Peterson, 710 First avenue; three sons, Pvt. William in Japan, Pvt. Robert at Biloxi, Miss., Donald of Garvey, Calif.; a brother, Sgt. Earl at Roswell, N. M.; four sisters, Mrs. Ida Poole, Mrs. Everett Hiatt and Miss Elsie Peterson, all of Council Bluffs, and Mrs. Bertha Hoeck of Carson.

The body will arrive from the Kansas City dispersal center Monday night.
