Cpl. Morgan Died in Battle Action

Cpl. Dale L. Morgan was killed in action with the 1st army in Germany on Dec. 1, according to an official notice received by his mother, Mrs. Bernice Porter, 705 South Twelfth street.

Overseas for the last two years, Cpl. Morgan served in Africa and Sicily before going to France on D-day. He attended Abraham Lincoln high school.

Cpl. Morgan is survived by his father, William E. Morgan, presumably of Omaha; one brother, Pfc. William Morgan on an island in the Philippine area; four half-sisters, Georgia Ann Porter, Doris Porter, Emily Porter and Jane Porter at home; and two half-brothers, James and Jerry Porter at home.

Return Bodies of Eight Vets
Three From Bluffs Included in Group

Eight southwest Iowans, including three from Council Bluffs, are among the war dead being returned to the United States aboard the USS Joseph V. Connolly, the Associated Press reported Saturday from Washington, D. C.

The army revealed most of the bodies were returned from Henri Chappelle cemetery, Eupen, Belgium. Some of them were returned from Argentina, Newfoundland, central assembly point for the dead from Iceland and Newfoundland.

The Council Bluffs’ dead are:

Pvt. Ernest D. Coad – next of kin, Mrs. Elizabeth R. Coad, 902 Second avenue. Killed at Aachen, Germany, Nov. 22, 1944.

Cpl. Dale L. Morgan – Mrs. Bernice Porter, 705 South Twelfth street. Killed in action with 1st army in Germany on Dec. 1, 1944.

Pfc. Robert G. Rohrberg – Mrs. Mary E. Elmore, 2000 Eleventh street. Killed in action in Germany, Feb. 23, 1945.

Other southwest Iowans are:

Pfc. Harry J. Dodson, route 1, Red Oak [Montgomery Co.].
Pvt. Melvin I. Ellison – Floyd Ellison, Woodbine [Harrison Co.].
Pvt. Elmer H. Madsen – Lars H. Madsen, route 1, Audubon [Audubon Co.]
Pvt. Stanley Mendenhall – Mrs. Charlene Mendenhall, Pisgah [Harrison Co.].
T/5 Richard D. Shafar – Fay L. Shafar, route 3, Bedford [Taylor Co.].

All of the bodies are being sent to the Kansas City, Mo., quartermasters depot regional distribution center.

Soldier Returned Here for Burial

Funeral services for Cpl. Dale L. Morgan, 22, son of Mrs. Fred Porter, 705 South Twelfth street, will be held in the Cutler chapel Thursday at 2 p. m.

Cpl. Morgan was killed in action while serving with the 1st army in Germany on Dec. 1, 1944. Overseas for two years, he served in Africa and Sicily before going in France on D-day. He had attended Abraham Lincoln high school.

Other survivors include his father, William Morgan of Omaha; one brother, William Morgan, jr.; one half-brother, Jerry Porter; four half-sisters, Georgia, Doris, Emily and June, all of Council Bluffs; one sister, Mrs. Joe Tobin of Omaha.

Burial will be at Cedar Lawn cemetery with a military service.
