S/Sgt. Walter Knudsen

 

SOLDIER PROMOTED

Walter Knudsen, son of Mrs. J. F. Knox, 4507 Harrison street, has been promoted to the rank of staff sergeant in the Army air corps.  He is stationed at Las Vegas, Nev.  Knudsen enlisted in the air corps after his graduation from Central high school.

Walter Samuel Knudsen was born Aug. 23, 1923 to Samuel and Hannah Pedersen Knudsen. He died Oct. 9, 1944 and was memorialized at the Walls of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery, Taguig City, Philippines. He also has a cenotaph in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City, IA (near his parents). *His remains are interred in a group burial at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.

Sgt. Knudsen served in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps Headquarters Squadron and was MIA/KIA/FOD. He was a gunner on B-24D “Mr. Five by Five” #42-40505. *His remains have been recovered and identified by the U.S. Dept. of Defense and a rosette has been placed next to his name on the Wall of the Missing to mark that the person now rests in a known gravesite.
