Jay E. Knapp

Jay E. Knapp, seaman second class, son of Mrs. Alva Knapp, 3917 Peters avenue, is serving on the U.S.S. Kenneth Whiting, seaplane tender, in the Pacific.  Seaman Knapp was a student in his last semester at East high school when he enlisted in the Navy.  He spent 18 months on board the Kenneth Whiting, participating in many of the major naval engagements, including Okinawa, Leyte and the Philippines.  The Kenneth Whiting arrived in Sasebo bay, Kyushu, Japan, the day before the main force, and the men on board had the opportunity of watching an enemy stronghold being seized.
