Battle Creek, Ia., Corporal Winner of Bronze Star Medal

Battle Creek, Ia.—Cpl. Clarence M. Hargens, of Battle Creek, with the 95th infantry division in Germany, has been awarded the bronze star medal for heroic achievement during their successful campaigns for Metz and Saarlautern.

A member of the 320th medical battalion, Cpl. Hargens watched an infantry soldier approach an apparently unoccupied German pillbox near Saarlautern. When the soldier got within 20 feet of the emplacement a machine gun opened fire, wounding him severely.

At this time, enemy small arms mortar and artillery fire was intense, but Cpl. Hargens, at the risk of his own life, walked to where the casualty lay and administered first aid to him. He is the son of Mrs. Clara Hargens.
