Lindsey E. Etheridge

 

Former Local Boy Reported Missing

Seaman 1/c Lindsey E. Etheridge, 18, of Council Bluffs, is reported missing in action in the south Pacific, according to word received here by friends Thursday.

He is the son of Mrs. William Scofield, formerly of Council Bluffs, now residing at Long Beach, Calif., who received word of him being missing.

He attended Thomas Jefferson high school, and in May, 1943, enlisted in the navy. He had been in the south Pacific for more than a year and was a gunner.

Seaman Etheridge formerly lived at 1910 Sixth avenue.

Lindsey E. Etheridge was born Apr. 22, 1926 to Thomas E. and Cecil R. Rhodes Etheridge. He died Dec. 18, 1944 and is memorialized at the Walls of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery, Taguig City, Philippines.

Petty Officer Etheridge served in World War II with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Monaghan (DD-354) and died in the sinking of that ship during Typhoon Cobra.
