Ensign John A. Estel

Gold Star Mother

Gold Stars Are Symbols of Mother’s Day
for Women Whose Sons Will Never Return

Gold Star Mothers represent hundreds like them in Waterloo to whom Mother’s day brings memories of the sons who will never return from service in World War II. Although they join with the nation in rejoicing in the victory over Germany, they contributed more than anyone else to make V-E day a reality.

Shown in the photo with this news article is the son of Mrs. E. S. Estel, 266 Prospect boulevard, whose son, Ens. John A. Estel, was killed in July, 1943, in the crash of a navy training plane near Ottumwa where he was stationed as a flight instructor at the naval air base.
