Fr. Woodrow Elias Becomes Chaplain

Rev. Woodrow L. Elias, assistant pastor of St. Francis church here since his ordination to the priesthood in May, 1943, will report Oct. 1 to chaplain’s orientation school at For Devens, Mass. He was sworn into the army Sept. 10. Father Elias will leave Council Bluffs Sunday for a short visit with his parents at Des Moines before reporting for duty.

His three brothers in the army are Capt. Theodore with the chemical warfare division in France; S. Sgt. Richard at Camp Hahn, Calif.; and Cpl. Maurice at Camp Butner, N. C.

Father Elias’ place here will be filled by Rev. Peter N. Schmitz, who has been assistant pastor of St. Anthony’s church at Des Moines. A native of Panama, Ia., Father Schmitz was ordained in 1940 from the Kenick seminary. He spent some time studying in Rome, but was recalled to this country at the outbreak of the war.
