Local Youth Is Reported Killed

S. Sgt. Gene Dixon on Italian Front

Mrs. M. E. Dixon, 250 West Washington avenue, received word Sunday of the death of her grandson, S. Sgt. Gene W. Dixon, 28, who has been in the army for three years. S. Sgt. Dixon had been overseas one year and was stationed with a division headquarters in Italy at the time of his death on Dec. 15.

Dixon had made his home with his grandmother for several years prior to his enlistment. He was a graduate of Abraham Lincoln high school in 1934 and was active in the ROTC, football and basketball, and a member of the Omega Eta Tau Fraternity.

Besides his grandmother with whom he made his home, he is survived by one daughter, Dixie Lou Dixon of Neola; his mother, Mrs. Katherine M. Hagen of Council Bluffs; three brothers, Robert Dixon, fireman 1/c, of the navy overseas, Tom Dixon of Denver, Col., and Jack Dixon of Council Bluffs; and one aunt, Lucille Anderson of Council Bluffs. Dixon’s father, Roy Dixon, who died a few years ago, was employed as a stereotype operator at the New Nonpareil company for 20 years previous to his death.

Receives Purple Heart

Mrs. M. E. Dixon has received the Purple Heart awarded posthumously to her grandson, S. Sgt. Gene Dixon, who was killed in action on Dec. 15, and has forwarded it to his daughter, Dixie Lou, who is attending school in Neola.

Awards Purple Heart

Posthumous awards of the Purple Heart have been received by Mrs. M. E. Dixon, grandmother of S. Sgt. Gene Dixon, killed Dec. 15, and Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Anderson (sic), parents of Eugene Anderson (sic), fireman 1/c killed in Sicily August 6, 1943.

Return Bodies of 2 Local Soldiers

Troth, Dixon Both Killed in Italy

Bodies of two Council Bluffs soldiers, both killed in Italy, are among eight southwest Iowans being returned to the United States aboard the army transport Carroll Victory.

The local men are Pvt. Russell E. Troth, 21, son of Mrs. Jennie Donahue, 2642 Fourth ave., and S/Sgt. Gene W. Dixon, 28, grandson of Mrs. M. E. Dixon, 250 West Washington ave.

Pvt. Troth, who was graduated from Thomas Jefferson high school in 1942, was killed in Italy on Feb. 14, 1944. Surviving are his mother and step-father; two sisters, Mrs. Murldean Austin of Independence, Mo., and Mrs. Lorene Mattox of Council Bluffs, and a brother, Robert Troth, at home. Cutler’s funeral home will be in charge of funeral arrangements when the body is returned here.

Active in Athletics.

Sgt. Dixon died in Italy on Dec. 15, 1943. He graduated from Abraham Lincoln high school in 1934, was active in ROTC, football and basketball.

Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Katherine M. Hagen of Denver, Col.; a daughter, Dixie Lou Dixon of Long Beach, Calif.; three brothers, Robert and Tom Dixon of Denver and
Jack of Council Bluffs; and an aunt, Lucille Anderson of Council Bluffs. Sgt. Dixon made his home with his grandmother for several years prior to enlistment. Woodring’s funeral home will be in charge of arrangements here.

Obituaries

SGT. GENE W. DIXON

The body of Sgt. Gene Willard Dixon, 28, 250 West Washington avenue, will arrive in Council Bluffs Tuesday evening and will be taken to Woodring funeral home. Sgt. Dixon was killed in action in Italy in December, 1943.

Funeral will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Woodring chapel, the Rev. A. C. Baker of St. Paul’s Episcopal church officiating. Rainbow post No. 2 of the American Legion will be in charge of military rites at Cedar Lawn cemetery.
