Parents of “Dick” Conway Receive His Silver Star

The silver star, awarded posthumously to Pfc. Richard J. (Dick) Conway, 19-year-old infantryman, for gallantry in action October 7, 1944, has been received by the parents, Mr. and Mrs. John S. Conway, 3903 Monroe street.  The presentation was made by Capt. Sam C. Barbara of the University of South Dakota.

Pfc. Conway, according to the citation, “was the leading member of a four-man patrol sent to reconnoiter approaches to an important crossroad.  Encountering an enemy road block defended by three German soldiers with a light machine gun, Pfc. Conway told his comrades to take over and advanced on the road block, firing his automatic rifle. He destroyed the enemy at the road block, but was himself killed by a hidden sniper.  Pfc. Conway’s gallant performance reflects the high traditions of the Army of the United States.”
