JEROME CONNELL SUFFERS WOUND
Hurt in Italy by Enemy’s Shell Fragment.

Word that their son, Sgt. Jerome C. Connell, was wounded by a shell fragment in his leg on or about Jan. 10, during enemy action in Italy, was received Saturday by Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Connell, 339 Saxon street.

Sergeant Connell is now in an Army hospital and is also under treatment for a burned hand. He has been awarded the Purple Heart which the Red Cross is sending home to his parents.

Sergeant Connell left Waterloo with the national guard unit in May, 1941, and was sent to Ireland in January, 1942. He was later sent to Africa where he was in five major battles, and has since been on continuous active duty in the Italian campaign. This was his first wound.

A twin brother, Pfc. Joseph Connell, incurred a hand wound while with the Marines on Guadalcanal about a year ago, and after his recovery, was reassigned to active duty on Mare Island last Nov. His parents received word last week that he was recovering from pneumonia in a Marine hospital there.

Another brother, Cpl. Russell Connell, is serving with the Marines in the South Pacific.
