Local Youth Is Listed as Dead

Motor Machinist’s Mate 2/c Carl Layne Colwell, reported missing in action since Sept. 27, has been officially listed as dead, an Association Press dispatch revealed Friday.

Son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Colwell, the Ogden hotel, he entered the navy in Nov. 1942, he received specialized training following his boot training at Richmond, Va. Choosing active sea duty rather than additional training, he was stationed at Porto Rico on coast patrol.

He was assigned to a nine sweeper when declared missing in action.

Carl Layne Colwell was born Nov. 11, 1923 to Carl and Velma Margaret Robinson Colwell. He died Sept. 24, 1944 and is memorialized at the Walls of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery, Taguig City, Philippines.

Petty Officer Colwell served in World War II with the U.S. Navy. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
