RETURN OF WAR DEAD FOR BURIAL

Bodies From Pacific Area Arrive In U. S.

Two soldiers from Council Bluffs are included in the 2,012 war dead who have been returned to the United States from the Pacific area aboard the army transport Sgt. Jack J. Pendleton, the department of the army announced Tuesday.

They are Pvt. William S. Cohrs and Pfc. Alvin G. Kemplin, both of the army.

Pvt. W. Stanley Dick Cohrs is the son of Mrs. Mable Stewart, 344 West Washington avenue. He was killed in action April 5, 1945, on Okinawa. Entering the army in July, 1944, he served with the infantry over seas. Prior to induction he was employed by the Safeway Cab company.

Survivors are his mother, three daughters, Sandra Jean, Sharon and Janice, one sister, La Vonne Hartshorn, and two brothers, Dwight and Roland Cohrs, all of Council Bluffs.

The body will come to Woodring’s funeral home. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Cemetery. 

lso returned was Pfc. Eugene M. Smith, husband of Mrs. Clara J. Smith of Carson. He was the son of Mrs. Lola Smith. He attended Carson schools before entering the army. He was killed in action on Okinawa May 14, 1945.

Survivors are the widow, one son, Jimmie Eugene, his mother and one sister. The body will come to McKee funeral home at Carson.

Obituaries

The body of Pvt. William Stanley “Dick” Cohrs, killed in action April 5, 1945, on Okinawa, will arrive in Council Bluffs Friday morning and be taken to the Woodring funeral home pending arrangements. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn.

Funerals

Military services for Pvt. William Stanley Cohrs, killed in action on Okinawa, will be Saturday at 2 p. m. at Woodring chapel, with the Rev. Loren Works officiating. Rainbow post No. 2 of the American Legion will conduct rites at Cedar Lawn.
