Pfc. Jacob P. Brood

 

Killed on Iwo Jima

Pfc. Marine Jacob P. Brood, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hans Brood, Swaledale, was killed in action on Iwo Jima on Feb. 22, according to word received here.

Pfc. Brood was killed just a year from the day he left home, it was stated. He was 19 on his last birthday, Dec.12, and was the eldest son in the family.

As a civilian, Brood farmed with his father at Swaledale. He took his training at San Diego, Cal.

Jacob Peter “Jack” Brood was born Dec. 12, 1925 to Hans Peter and Anna Marie Kjorsgaard Brood. He died Feb. 22, 1945 and is buried in Pleasant Valley Township Cemetery, Swaledale, IA. He was initially buried in the 5th Marine Division Cemetery on Iowa Jima and returned to the U.S. for permanent burial in 1948.

Pvt. Bond served in World War II with the U.S. Marine Corps and participated in combat operations on Iwo Jima until KIA.
