Lt. Davis served in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps 91st Bomber Squadron, 27th Bomber Group, Light and became MIA and was a POW of the Japanese. He lost his life as one of the 1, 619 POWs that were on a transport ship that was torpedoed and sunk by U.S. planes. He was awarded the Purple Heart.

Ensign Davis served in World War II with the U.S. Coast Guard aboard the USS Serpens (AK-97), that was responsible for delivering troops, goods and equipment to locations in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. The Serpens and her crew of 196 Coast Guard crewmen, 57 Army stevedores and a Public Health Service physician, Dr. Harry M. Levin were killed in the explosion (off Guadalcanal), and a soldier ashore was killed by shrapnel. Only two of those on board survived.
