Charles Ellis Sams was born Jan. 9, 1921 to Henry Madison and Phebe Minner Sams. He died Apr. 23, 1945 and is buried in Jackson Township Cemetery, Montezuma, IA.

2nd Lt. Sams served in World War II with the U.S. Marine Corps 1st Battalion, 22nd Marines, 6th Marine Division and participated in combat operations on Okinawa until KIA.

Lawrence Neil Smith was born Nov. 23, 1920 to Ray Irwin and Ludy Gwendolyn Andes Smith. He died Dec. 1, 1943/FOD Jan. 22, 1946 and is memorialized at the Walls of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery, Taguig City, Philippines and has a cenotaph in Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery, Brooklyn, IA.

Capt. Smith served in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps 320th Bomber Squadron, 90th Bomber Group, Heavy and was MIA/KIA/FOD as a Captain and pilot on B-24D “Lobo” #42-40830 which was attacked by the Japanese after the completion of a bombing mission against Wewak. It is believed they crashed in the sea. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal and Purple Heart.

Eugene Robert Stanley AKA John Robert Maupin was born Aug. 5, 1923 to J. Roy and Mary Etta Stevens Maupin and was adopted by Milton Otto and Edna Rose Morley Stanley. He died Feb. 20, 1942 and is buried in Rock Island National Cemetery, Rock Island, IL.

Petty Officer Stanley served in World War II with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Tennessee (BB-43) and USS Stewart (DD-224) and was KIA in the performance of his duty and in the service of his country in the Battle of Badung Strait, when the Stewart came under extremely accurate fire from Japanese destroyers.

Russell Eugene State was born July 19, 1923 to Floyd A. and Vena Zelma Ritter State. He died Jan. 3, 1946 and is buried in Hazelwood Cemetery, Grinnell, IA.

Russell served with the U.S. Marine Corps in World War II.
