Dean Dwight Shaffer was born Feb. 19, 1926 to Theodore Harold and Tracy Matilda Mallum Shaffer. He died Oct. 16, 1944 and has a cenotaph in Soldier Lutheran Church Cemetery, Soldier, IA.
Petty Officer Shaffer served with the U.S. Naval Air Corps in World War II and lost his life when his plane disappeared on a night navigation over water and all efforts to find the plane were unsuccessful. He was listed as MIA.
