James Frederick Kirkendall was born Feb. 19, 1920 to Oren F. and Bessie A. Evernham Kirkendall. He died Feb. 16, 1995 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.

Maj. Gen. Kirkendall served in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps as a pilot with the 324th Fighter Group in the European Theatre of Operations. He flew 150 combat missions in P-38 “Lightning's” and P-47 “Thunderbolts”. He also served in Korea, commanding a fighter squadron in Japan and flew 104 combat missions in that conflict, piloting P-51 “Mustangs” and F-80 jet fighters. In 1969 and 1970, he was stationed in Vietnam as deputy chief of staff of the Seventh Air Force and in Thailand as deputy commander of Seventh and Thirteenth Air Forces. Before retiring from active duty in 1974, his stateside assignments included tours in the office of the Air Force Chief of Staff, Curtis Lemay, and as assistant deputy chief of staff at the headquarters of the Tactical Air Command at Langley Air Force Base. He also graduated from the Air War College and the National War College.
