1st Lt. Hurst served in World War II with the U.S. Army 76th Infantry Division and was awarded a Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts, a Good Conduct Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, four European Theater Campaign Medals and a WWII Medal. After WWII he served with the National Guard as Battalion S2, Battalion S3, and Platoon Leader for a total of 42 years of service.
