James Edward Sykes was born May 28, 1918 to Sadie Mae Sykes. He died Aug. 6, 2006 and is buried in Hammond Cemetery, Hammond, IL.

Senior Chief Petty Officer served with the U.S. Navy in World War II aboard the USS Maryland (BB-46) and was a Pearl Harbor survivor. The “Old Mary” or “Fighting Mary” was on Battleship Row during the attack on Pearl Harbor.
