Everett W. Surface was born July 3, 1917 to Clarence W. and Hazel Inez Kemp Surface. He died Dec. 2, 1982 and is buried in Thurman Cemetery, Thurman, IA.

Everett served in World War II with the U.S. Navy.

Lowell Dean “Dean” Surface was born Jan. 22, 1926 to Sherman and Hazel Irene Buhr Surface. He died Oct. 18, 2012 and is buried in Thurman Cemetery, Thurman, IA.

Rev. Surface served in World War II with the U.S. Coast Guard and served 32 months. He was assigned to the USS Brownsville, a Navy patrol frigate, transferred under Naval command, served in the Pacific, the Aleutians, air sea rescue, sub patrol, and as a guide station for planes. As a cold war veteran, he was called back temporarily during the Korean War and served under the Army in 1968-1969 at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver on the amputee ward for a total of 17 months service.
