Petty Officer Dochterman served in World War II with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Santa Fe (CL-60). He was awarded the World War II, American Campaign, and Asiatic Pacific and Japan Occupation medals. His ship was awarded a Presidential Unit Citation for assistance for the sinking of the USS Franklin while under kamikaze attack during combat operations off the coast of Japan.
