Petty Officer Porter served in World War II with the U.S. Navy and died as the result of a plane crash. He was part of the crew from the Naval Air Station, Kaneohe, Hawaii on routine anti-submarine warfare practice when his plane was lost.

Ross Joseph Porter was born June 8, 1924 to Joseph Edwin and Goldie Logue Porter. He died Feb. 3, 2009 and is buried in Reno Cemetery, Cumberland, IA.

Pvt. Porter served in World War II with the U.S. Army where he was seriously injured when his parachute failed to open while making a jump with other paratroopers. His back was broken in three places. Ross was determined to recover, and he did.
