Robert Eugene Bonnesen was born Nov. 29, 1924 to Henry Peter and Pearl Eva Carper Bonnesen. He died June 6, 1944 and is memorialized at the Tablets of the Missing, Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-sur-Mer, France.

Petty Officer Bonnesen served in World War II with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS LCF-31 when that vessel struck a mine, during the early assault in the Allied invasion and occupation of the beaches and coastal area of Normandy, France, and sank almost immediately. He was MIA/FOD/KIA and awarded the Purple Heart.
