Paul James Gambiani was born Oct. 14, 1921 to Alfonso and Santa Maria Dinelli Gambiani. He died July 26, 2018 and is buried in Eden Cemetery, Hudson, SD.
2nd Lt. Gambiani served in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps as a co-pilot on a B-17 bomber. While on a bombing run they received damage and were forced to land in Switzerland where they were held as internees for several months. Paul and his navigator made a courageous attempt to escape and were caught at the French border. They were sent to the notorious Swiss punishment camp, Wauwilermoos, where they endured harsh treatment until being released on a prisoner exchange in 1945. Almost 70 years after his capture he was awarded the POW Medal in ceremonies at the Pentagon.
