Painting Murals
Private Leo Rich, son of Mrs. Sarah Rich, 719 W. Eight Street, is painting murals of army life on the walls of the U.S.O. Club at Camp Shelby, Mississippi. A letter received by Mrs. Rich from Harry A. Dobkin, U.S.O. field director, said, “Leo is making a real contribution to the club here.” Before entering service, Leo was a student at Chicago Art Institute.

“Southwest Pacific”
Max Gorchow of the amphibian division of the Marine Corps has arrived safely somewhere in the South Pacific, according to word received by his father, Frank Gorchow, 1608 Jackson Street.

First Lieut. Merrie Warfield, an instructor at Ellington Field, Texas, is visiting his mother, Mrs. D. JoAnn Warfield, 2306 Douglas Street, while on a 10-day leave.

Four Graduated
Four Sioux City men have completed 16 – week courses of intensive training at the service schools of the United States Navy at Great Lakes, Illinois. The names of the men graduated are Richard N. Friend, metalsmith, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. Nason Friend, 2030 S. Clinton Street; Theodore E Leckhand, machinist’s, son of Mr. and Mrs. John F. Leckband, 1400 Silver Street; Howard W. Androy, fire control, son of Fred H. Androy, 2116 Myrtle Street, and Leonard G. Torgerson, gunner’s mate, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gust Vlahopanos, 2023 S. Maple Street

Receives Promotion
Robert E. Cunningham has been promoted to the rank of corporal. He will leave this week for Camp Barkley, Texas, where he will enter officer’s training school. Corporal Cunningham has been stationed for the last four months at Camp Joseph T. Robinson, Arkansas with the medical corps.

Home From Coast
James R. Jackson, fireman second class, on the east coast, is spending a 10-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Williams, 1217 11th street, and his grandmother, Mrs. A J. Molden.

Sailor On Radio
Harry Everett Hindman, machinists mate third class and son of Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Hindman, 2515 Hamilton Street, was one of the Sioux City boys who broadcast last Saturday over a nationwide Mutual network and KTRI from Honolulu, Machinist Hindman has been with the navy at Pearl Harbor since soon after December 7. He enlisted in the navy in Sioux City in April 1940.

In Radio School
Seaman First Class Wilfred Wachter, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Wachter, now is taking a one-month radio technical course at the navy armory in Chicago after having received basic training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station. Seaman Wachter took a special radio course at Morningside College before enlisting.

On Navy Leave
Allen Tilton is spending a leave in the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. N. Tilton, 119 32d Street, after completion of six weeks training at the Great lakes Naval Training Station.

Bound For Ship
Byrl O. Behrens, petty officer, third class, has finished his training at the Great Lakes Training Station and will be sent to New York City to be assigned to a ship. He spent a recent furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Behrens at Westfield, Iowa.

Back To Hospital
Second Class Petty Officer Jack M. Downing, who has been home on a 30-day leave, will report to the Mare Island Hospital, Vallejo, California, Sunday. Petty Officer Downing, who was injured in the Pearl Harbor attack, has been visiting his wife and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Downing, 715 14th Street.

Overseas Promotions
Among the Sioux City boys overseas who have recently received promotions are Albert and Robert LaPlante, sons of Mr. and Mrs. T. D. LaPlante, 1423 W. Fourth Street. Albert, who was a second class radio man, has been promoted to radio supervisor, Robert was given the rank of radioman second class.

Named Sergeant
Private Donald W. McCarthy, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. McCarthy, 1318 S. Glass Street, has been promoted to sergeant at Camp Barkley, Texas.

On Active Duty
Gene Boni, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Klingston Boni, 2205 28th Street, left the Great Lakes Naval Training Station recently for active duty, after completing his training at the Great Lakes School and the Ford Naval Training School. He carries the rank of seaman, second class.

Home For Visit
Lieut. Ture L. D. Larson arrived Friday to visit his wife at Crystal Lake and his mother, Mrs. A. P. Larson, 1117 Morningside Avenue. He is stationed at Camp Walters, Texas, where he is in the dental corps.

Officer Promoted
Now it is Lieut. Col. Rudolph Knittel. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Knittel, 918 Douglas Street and is located at Duncan Field, San Antonio. Until recently he has had the rank of major.

Enlists In Army
Private Donald W. McCarthy, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. McCarthy, 1318 S. Glass Street, has been promoted to sergeant at Camp Barkley, Texas.

Dr. Howard I. Down, Sioux City, has been commissioned a major as a member of the University of Illinois Hospital unit He will go with the unit training in October for overseas duty.

Corporal Robert E. Henry, son of Mrs. Charles Smith, 422 ½ Nebraska Street, has been promoted to sergeant at Camp Edwards, Falmouth, Mass.

Clifford J. Reppert, son of Mr. and Mrs. BM. Reppert, 2016 S. Cedar Street, has cabled from Great Britain that he is safe and well. Clifford stated in a recent letter to his parents that he had been commissioned technical sergeant in the motorcycle corps. He left for overseas July 1.

Lieut. Edward J. Ressegieu, navigator in the army air corps, is spending a one-week furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Ressegieu, 1928 Nash Street. Lieut. Ressegieu is stationed at Alameda, California.

Technical Sergeant Basel E. Houchins, formerly of the 185th field artillery division of the Iowa National Guard, has been transferred to headquarters unit training center, Camp Hood, Texas.

Second Lieut. Theodore Percy Burdick, 1201 W. First Street, has completed a course of instruction in the officer’s department of the eastern signal corps school at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. Before entering the service, Lieut. Burdick attended R.C.A. institute in New York.

Corporal Jack D. Strain, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter V. Strain, 2512 Rebecca Street, has been admitted to the air forces candidate school at Miami Beach, Florida as an officer candidate. He will undergo a 12-week course of instruction.

Jack Merlin, son of Mrs. I. Merlin, 1706 Pierce Street, has been promoted to first class private at Camp Livingston, La., where he is a member of company B, 241st quartermaster battalion. Private Merlin formerly directed the Shaare Zion synagogue choir here.

Craig F. Ressegieu, 25, of 1512 Jones Street, has been transferred to the Great Lakes Naval Training School. He holds the rank of Ship’s cook, third class.

Sergeant Frank Bucchino, in the armed forces at Salinas, California is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Bucchino, 1613 Eighth Street. He enlisted in an observation squadron about 19 months ago. He is a brother of Patrolman A.A. Bucchino.

Harold Chartier, seaman returned Friday night to New York after an eight-day leave spent with his mother, Mrs. Beulah Douglas, 516 ½ Sioux Street. He had not been at home since October 1941. Chartier is a navy gunner, third class.

Private Sam Levine, son of Mrs. Goldie Levine, 1413 Myrtle Street, has been transferred from Camp Crowder, Missouri to Camp Atterbury, Indiana.

Donald Irving Hudson is spending the weekend with his sister, Mrs. Harold Revier, 1711 Omaha Street and his mother, Mrs. Ben F. Wyant of McCook Lake. Donald is attending the naval training school at Ames, Iowa and expects to finish the course in electrical engineering next December.

Aviation Cadet
Stanley W. Keagle, 20, son of Mr. Harry Keagle, 2106 S. Patterson Street, has been sworn in as a naval aviation cadet and will report to the navy pre-flight school at St. Mary’s college, California, when ordered to active duty.

On Leave Here
Bud Whitmer is spending five days with his mother, Mrs. G. R. Whitmer on his way from Bremerton, Washington to an east coast training station. He is in the navy.

Wins Commission
Thomas Roger Hughes, son of Mr. and Mrs. T R. Hughes, 3903 Orleans Avenue, has been commissioned a second lieutenant in the army ordnance department. A member of the National Guard, Lieut. Hughes was called to active duty in February, 1941. He was ordered to report to an officers’ candidate school, and specialized in aviation ordnance there.

Seeks Wings
Stanley B. Montz, son of Sam Montz of Sioux City, has been appointed an aviation cadet at Hunter field, Savannah, Georgia. At the time of his appointment, he was serving as technical sergeant.

Enlists In Marines
Arthur S. Paul, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur V. Paul, 4220 Central Avenue, has enlisted in the Marine Corps. He arrived Saturday at San Diego, California where he will join his brother, Robert in training at the same base. Robert enlisted several weeks ago.

Goes Back To Sea
After an eight-day furlough with his mother, Mrs. Beulah Douglas, 516 ½ Sioux Street, Harold Chartier, a third class gunner with the merchant marines, departed for sea again. He has been stationed on the Barbados Islands, Trinidad Island and at Georgetown, British Guiana.

Becomes Sergeant
Kenneth A. Klass, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. G Klass, 1806 W. Sixth Street, has been promoted from the rank of corporal to sergeant on the completion of an aerial gunnery course at Tyndall field, Florida. He has been transferred to MacDill field, Florida, where he has been assigned to a bomber squadron

Receives Rating
James M. Hurley, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Hurley, 1116 McDonald Street, has been graduated from the University of Chicago’s Signal and Radio School, now used by the navy, with a rank of signalman third class. Mr. Hurley received his initial training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station. He is now on his way to the west coast for assignment.

Sailor Ends Leave
Lloyd Smith, second class pharmacist mate in the navy, has departed for the west coast following an eight-day leave spent with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Smith, 1821 S. Cypress Street. Pharmacist-Smith has been in the navy for the last three years. Most of that time he has been assigned to the naval hospital at Pearl Harbor.

Home on Leave
Robert McClurg, son of Mrs. Ella McClurg, 408 S. Iowa Street, returned home Wednesday evening after six weeks of training at the Great Lakes Naval Training School at Chicago. After nine days leave he will return to the training base to receive his assignment to active duty.

Friends In Service
Harold Raymond Linafelter, son of Mrs. Marian Nooney, 1007 Ninth Street and Donald Wingler, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. V. Wingler, 2507 Center Street are recruits at the Great Lakes Naval training station. Longtime friends, the young men went through school together and were graduated from Central High School.

Three more Sioux Cityans have reported for training at the Great Lakes Naval Station. The new bluejackets include Arthur Engel, 707 ½ Pierce Street; Joe Skaff, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Skaff, 1415 Virginia Street and George Comstock, son of Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Comstock, 1407 Silver Street.

Visiting Here
Private Glen Harris of Soldier, Iowa is visiting in the Luella McKinley home, 806 Dubuque Street, while on furlough from Fort Riley, Kansas.

Leaves Great Lakes
Kenneth Thompson, son of Mr. and Mrs. G. L Thompson, 1403 Prescott Street, has completed his training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station and has left for assignment with the rank of seaman, first class.

Sailor Ends Leave
Lester Burdick, Sydney Apartments, spent four days at home with his wife and has returned to the Great Lakes Naval Training School where he has received five weeks basic training. He is assigned to trade school as a machinist’s mate.

Private Promoted
Mervin A. Strand, stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky, has been promoted to the rank of corporal. He is a brother of Alice, Ethel and Dora Strand, all of Sioux City. Another brother, Gordon, has been in the army stationed in Australia since December.

Soldier On Furlough
Private Harold Hills arrived Friday from Camp Sutton, North Carolina for a furlough here. His wife resides at 2521 10th Street, and his parents are Mr. and Mrs. Tom Hills, 3319 Fifth Street. He has spent four months in service.

At Proving Grounds
Private Larry Besch of Sioux City and Private Vernon Edgcumbe, son of William M. Edgcumbe, member of the office of defense transportation staff at the stockyards, now are stationed at the Aberdeen proving grounds in Maryland.

Home On Furlough
William Gerald McKee is spending a furlough in the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. G. McKee, 2529 Rebecca Street He has just completed two months preflight training in the army air corps at Santa Ana, California.

Becomes Navy Cook
Mrs. Craig Ressegieu, 1512 Jones Street, has received word that her husband, who is a third class petty officer, has been attached to the commissary department as a cook at Great Lakes, Illinois. He enlisted August 23.

Ensign In Training
Ensign Douglas P. Beggs, son of Mr. and Mrs. Porter S. Beggs, 511 31st Street, is taking preliminary training in the navy at Norfolk, Virginia.

Henry Groves, formerly of Sioux City, has been promoted to the rank of corporal and is stationed at Camp Shelby, Mississippi. He is the son of Perry Groves of W. Third Street.

Harry K. Stolze, formerly of Sioux City and recently of Gayville, South Dakota, is now stationed at the technical school at Sioux Falls, where he is studying radio. He is a brother of Ralph Stolze, 2105 W. First Street. Harry taught in the Gayville public school until going into the service.

Leo McCoy Martin, formerly of Sioux City, has been promoted to the rank of corporal and is stationed at Camp Roberts, California. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Martin, 1216 13th Street. He is a graduate of Central High School. He entered the service April 19, 1942.

Julius E. Brown, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Brown, 1118 10th Street, has been promoted to the rank of corporal at Camp Edwards, Massachusetts.

Promoted In Air Corps
Corporal Earl E. Potts, son of Mr. and Mrs Guy Potts, has been recently promoted to that rank. He has been stationed in Australia since April, where he serves as a radio ground man in the army air Corps. He enlisted last January.

Reports For Service
Edward Scurlock, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Scurlock, 906 Pacific Street, has reported for service in the army ordnance division at Camp Perry, Ohio. Lawrence Scurlock, another son of Mr. and Mrs. Scurlock, has been promoted to staff sergeant at Fort Flagler, Washington. He has been in the army five years.

Going To School
Robert S. Mastin, 3601 42d Street, is a member of the class of 28 candidates certified by headquarters of the Seventh Service Command for three months training as a junior repairman at the civilian signal corps training school at Aberdeen, South Dakota. Mr. Mastin left Omaha Monday.

To Be Mechanic
Private Laurence R. Murphy, son of Mrs. Abe Vermilyea, Luton, Iowa, a former Journal carrier boy, is now stationed in Chicago, where he is receiving instruction in aircraft mechanics. Private Murphy, who left here June 3, 1942, will be graduated with his 600 schoolmates as a mechanic in the army air corps.

Visits Parents
Harold C. Gallant of Flint, Michigan is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Gallant, 228 Helen Street, preparatory to leaving Thursday for Fort Custer in Michigan to begin army training.

Leaves For Camp
Charles W. Longval, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles J. Longval, 1823 Jones Street, left Tuesday for Fort Leavenworth, after a two-week visit at home. He was inducted recently at Fort Crook.

Joins The Navy
Dean Terpestra, son of Mr. and Mrs. Pete Terpestra of Sioux City, left for Des Moines to join the Navy. He was honored at a fare well dinner given by Mr. and Mrs. Dan A. Grieg, 2469 Boise Street

Named Sergeant
Stanley D. Essig, son of Mr. and Mrs. T. D Essig, 2350 Nash Street, has been promoted to sergeant in the communications division of the air corps. He has been a radio operator in the control tower at Paine field, Everett, Washington.

Enters Navy
Vincent Daniels, 2203 S. Rustin Street, passed his physical examination for the navy Wednesday at Des Moines and will go to the Great Lakes Naval Training Station for preliminary training. He is an East High School graduate. His wife lives at the Rustin Street address and he is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Daniels, 1511 Nicollet Street.

In Air School
Private Alfred A. Smith, son of Mrs. A. Makancas, 2011 27th Street, has been transferred to Marana, Arizona, where he is receiving instructions at the air flight school in his duties as a ground crew member.

Soldier Transferred
Private T.E. Reilly has been visiting in the home of his mother, Mrs. Emmett Reilly, 1811 George Street. He has been stationed at Camp Joe T. Robinson, Little Rock, Arkansas, but has been assigned to duty at Fort Omaha, Nebraska.

Enlists In Navy
LeRoy Clair Aspleaf, 2921 Center Street, has been accepted for service in the navy and will report immediately to the Great Lakes Naval Training School for training.

Chaplain Assigned
Rev. Roy Cox, former pastor of Methodist Churches in Danbury, Manson, Moville and Spirit Lake, has completed a course for army chaplains at Harvard University, according to word received by Mrs. Cox, who resides at 1325 S. Newton Street here.
Rev. Mr. Cox has been assigned to duty at the Erie proving grounds, LaCarne, Ohio.

Marine Writes Home
A letter written July 10 from somewhere in the southwest Pacific by Staff Sergeant Frank Smith of the United States Marine Corps has just been received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Smith, 2701 Cottage Street. Sergeant Smith told of crossing the equator and the international dateline. He related that he had landed safely and expected to be “in action soon.”

Parachutist
Dick Calhoon former Central High School athlete is taking final training as a parachutist at Fort Bennings, Georgia, following three month’s preliminary training at Fort Logan, near Denver. Mr. Calhoon is a nephew of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Calhoon, 2207 Isabella Street.

Promoted To Corporal
Norman Satin, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. Satin, 1708 Pierce Street, has been promoted corporal in the radio division at Baker field, Colorado.

In Officers’ School
Staff Sergeant Harry Kanofsky, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Kanofsky, 1821 Nebraska is attending the officers training school at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Promoted To Captain
John V. Conway, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Conway of near Dakota City, has been promoted to the rank of captain at Duncan field, San Antonio, Texas. Captain Conway entered the service when the Iowa National Guard, of which he was a member, was made a part of the army. A former resident of LeMars, he now resides in San Antonio with his wife and two sons.

Named Corporal
Thomas Myles Dougherty, son of Mrs. Elizabeth Dougherty, 1020 Pierce Street, has been promoted to the rank of corporal. Mr. Dougherty is stationed with the armed forces at Camp Barkley, Texas.

Private Roger A. McMahon, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. R. A. McMahon, 1921 Riverside Boulevard, has been transferred to Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana, where he has begun his basic training in finance. Upon completion of an intensive field training program, he will be sent into the classroom to study army pay methods.

Seaman John T. Donovan, son of Mrs. T. D. Donovan, 1923 Riverside Boulevard, has been transferred from the Great Lakes naval training station to Navy Pier at Chicago for technical training. He left here this week following a five-day leave upon completion of his preliminary training.

Lieut. Charles A. Striegel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Striegel, 507 W. Fourth Street, has been assigned to Camp Polk, Louisiana, where he is serving with an armored maintenance battalion.

Charles W. Corkhill, son of Mrs. C. W. Corkhill, 2805 Isabella Street, who is attending the radio detachment school, C.R.E.I., in Washington, suffered a leg fracture while playing softball and is a patient in Walter Reed Hospital, Washington.

William G. Stickels, 2610 Virginia Street, who enlisted in the army air corps last April, has been called to Kelly field, San Antonio, Texas, for preflight training. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Stickels.

Visits Wife Here
Neil De Kok, seaman second class, of the Great Lakes training station, is visiting his wife and other relatives in the home of Mrs. De Kok’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas H. Butler, 3801 W. 23d Street. He will return next week.

Sends Irish Rose
Private William Johnson, son of Mrs. Hilda Johnson, 427 Myrtle Street, sent an Irish rose to his mother. He is serving with an antitank company with the American forces in Ireland.

Home On Furlough
First Class Private Ivan E. Harlow is home on a 10-day furlough from Fort Leonard Wood, visiting his mother, Mrs. H. J. Simmons, 1112 13th Street. He will leave next Wednesday for Fort Belvoir, Virginia, to complete his officer’s training course.

Harold Nelson of Luton has been promoted to corporal at Camp Edwards in Massachusetts where he is stationed. Corporal Nelson, who enlisted here April 19, is a member of a boat battalion in the army camp.

Begins Training
Leo T. Foley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Foley, 1715 Lakeport Road, has stated preliminary army instruction at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He will be transferred in the near future to a replacement training center, where he will receive eight week’s basic training.

Two Woodbury County men have begun the study of how to keep an army tank in battle trim at the armored school tank department at Fort Knox, Kentucky. They are Corporal Marcel M. Foix, son of Mrs. Arman Foix, 419 John Street and Private Frederick M. Rose, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. G. Rose of Hornick.

Being on K.P. duty at one of the big Florida Hotels where 2,200 men were fed involves “washing enough trays to reach out to the three-mile limit,” First Class Private James A. Forrester from Sioux City writes friends here. Jim is happy that his basic training is finished and he is assigned to duty in squadron headquarters at an air corps training base. Private Forrester is a son of Rev. R. H. Forrester, formerly of Rustin Avenue Methodist Church, now located in Correctionville.

Recalled To Duty
Jack W. Lowe, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. G. A Lowe, 2025 Howard Street, who left here with the National Guard unit and was given a medical discharge because of a knee injury, has been recalled to service and will leave, Friday. He underwent an operation on his knee since being discharged. Clinton Lowe, another son is in the field artillery at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

In Army Air Force
Cadet William G. Stickles, 24-years-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter R. Stickles, 2610 Virginia Street, has entered the army air force’s classification center in Nashville. A graduate of Central High School, Cadet Stickles played on football and basketball teams there. He attended Iowa State College. He married the former Adele Roberts, also of Sioux City.

As copilot in a B-25 bomber, he was on a routine cross country flight from his base in Columbia, South Carolina. Lieut. Lamberto received his “wings” and commission August 5 and is completing his tactical training at the army air base at Columbia.

At Atlantic City
Private Jack S. Haney, son of Mrs. Lillian Haney, 1001 Jones Street, a member of a signal and radio intelligence company, enlisted in the signal corps last March. He was first stationed at Camp Crowder, Missouri, later moved to Fort Tilden, New York and is now stationed at Atlantic City, New York. He left here Wednesday after a short furlough.

Staff Sergeant Now
John B. Dagle, who is stationed at the army air corps headquarters at Hill field, Ogden, Utah, has been promoted to the rank of staff sergeant. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Dagle of near Sioux City.

Allen Gliessman has been promoted to petty officer first class in the navy and now is serving in European waters, according to word received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. F.W. Gliessman, 2632 Douglas Street. He is a graduate of Central High School and enlisted in December. Edward H. Heath, husband of the Gliessmans’ daughter, Kathryn, is now a chief gunner’s mate. He was at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked December 7. Since his promotion he has been transferred to Atlantic waters.

Private Bill J. Morgan is spending a 15-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. K. Morgan, 2002 S. Alice Street. Private Morgan graduated last Saturday from the army post mechanics school at Victorville, California.

In Australia
Corporal Richard John McNally, with the armed forces in Australia, has written “that he is well and getting along fine.” He is the son of Mrs. H. W. Ingwersen of Burlington and a grandson of Mr. and Mrs. James Kelliher, 500 S. Fairmount Street, Sioux City. He left the United States in February of this year. The letter was written August 15.

Working For Wings
Leonard C. Wilson, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Wilson, 3232 Jackson Street, has completed his elimination flight training and is now at the naval air station at Corpus Christi, Texas where he will complete his training for wings and commissions in the navy or the Marine Corps reserve. Included in the 32 Iowa cadets reporting were William D. Murphy and Norman K. Barrett, both of Ida Grove, William H. Everett of Little Sioux and Richard T. Smith of Sheldon.

In Medical Training
Private Brownley E. Cagley, son of Mrs. Alice Cagley, has been transferred from Camp J.T. Robinson, Arkansas to special service training school at the Fitzsimmons General Hospital at Denver. Private Cagley is being trained as a surgical technician.

Begins Navy Training
New arrivals at the naval training station at Great Lakes, Illinois, include Robert G. Rose, son of Mrs. Maude Rose, 1418 Center Street; Ernest Schulberg, son of Mrs. Arthur M. Among those graduating from the medical administrative corps officers’ candidate school recently was Vilmer K. Berger, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. V.K. Berger, 26, Blackstone Avenue. He was commissioned as second lieutenant.

Enters Army School
Private Allan Brown, son of Clifford Brown, 4329 Fillmore Street, who has been stationed at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, the last two weeks, has entered the quartermaster’s training school at Fort Warren, Wyoming.

Named Sergeant
Cyril M. Wagers, son of Mrs. Pauline Wagers, 1610 Pierce Street, has been advanced to the rank of sergeant, and has been transferred from Camp Edwards, Massachusetts, to a Florida army base.

Home On Leave
R.J. Wilkes, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Wilkes, 2507 S. Martha Street, is here on a two-week leave, visiting his parents and wife’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Coil, 2721 S. Cypress Street. Sons In Service
After taking training at Aberdeen, South Dakota, Clark E. Huffman of a signal corps division spent Sunday with his family and mother, Mrs. Lila Huffman, 1114 ½ W. Second Street. Mrs. Huffman is in receipt of a letter from another son, Harold J. Huffman, forces in Northern Ireland, that private first class, with the armed he “is well and happy.” Clark was on the way to Rolla, Missouri. Private Huffman was a member of a National Guard unit here and received training in Louisiana.

Second Lieutenant
Ralph Albert Nice, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Nice, 810 S. Rustin Street, has been graduated from the officer’s candidate school at Fort Sill, Oklahoma and commissioned a second lieutenant in the field artillery. Lieut. Nice has been assigned to Fort Ord, California.

Corporal John Ryan has returned to Fort Bliss, Texas after spending a 10-day furlough here with his wife, Mrs. John Ryan and family, 1514 W. 28th Street, and his mother, Mrs. Mary Ryan, Salix.

Everett W. Lahann, son of Mrs. Maude Lahann, 89 15th Street, has been assigned to shore duty at Great Lakes Naval Training Station in Illinois. A musician first class, Mr. Lahann has been on sea duty the last four years. With his wife, who will live with him at Waukegan, Illinois, Mr. Lahann is visiting his mother and friends here.

P. C. Parks, second class machinist mate at the navy yard in Philadelphia, has returned after a 10-day leave spent with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Parks, 1627 W. Fifth Street.

Private Truman E. Nelson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Nelson, 1610 Ross Street, has been promoted to technical sergeant at Boise, Idaho. He is in the military police corps.

Private R. L. Miller, son of Mrs. H. R. Miller of Correctionville, has been awarded an army medal for target shooting He is stationed at Orlando, Florida.

First Lieut. Marvin J. Frum, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Frum of Danbury, has reported for duty at March Field, California. Lieut. Frum received his A. B. Degree from Morningside College in 1940. His wife, Mrs. Mae Elaine Frum, lives in Detroit, Michigan.

Paul W. Patterson, son of Mrs. Maude Patterson of Whiting, Iowa, who is stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center, is home on a nine-day leave for a visit with friends and relatives.

Seaman On Leave
Jerome Smith, seaman first class is here on a seven-day leave to visit his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Smith, 806 S. Glass Street. Jerome has been in navy for four and a half years and is up for promotion the first of the month. He was at Pearl Harbor the day the Japanese attacked, but fortunately was uninjured.

Abner Lindgren, fireman, second class, in the navy, is visiting his sisters here, Ruth, Edna and Eileen Lindgren, Tott Apartments and his father, Conrad Lindgren, Estherville, Iowa, during a 12-day furlough. He returns to his base at Bremerton, Washington Friday. He enlisted in the Navy in March.

Aviation Cadet Gale D. Stevens, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Stevens, 711 Plymouth Street, has been classified as a pilot at Nashville, Tennessee and transferred to Maxwell field, Alabama for preflight training. His wife, the former Verna Swanson, will join him there.

First Class Petty Officer P.M. Chase, instructor in the cooks and bakers school at Navy pier, Chicago, is home on leave visiting his brother, Dan Chase and sister, Mrs. James E. Barton, 2803 W Fifth Street.

Dr. Frank F. Stodden has returned to Sioux City after a year in the government service and after he had been rejected for active service because of a chest wound suffered in the First World War. Two sons, Sergeant David F. Stodden, Camp Adair, Oregon and Corporal Donald R. Stodden, Camp Barkley, are in the service. Sergeant David F. Stodden is a former employee of The Journal.

Two Sioux City men, Herman H. Petersen, 1312 Wall Street and William V. De Maranville, 106 Stellart Apartments, enlisted in the coast guard Monday at the Omaha recruiting office. They are being assigned to a training station at once. Petersen was a bartender before his enlistment. De Maranville, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl De Maranville, 2027 Cleveland Street, left a position as a cattle buyer.

Four men from the Sioux City area have been inducted into the army at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. They include Merle W. Miller of Sergeant Bluff, Vernon O’Meara of Oto, Jerry L. Larkin of Moville and LeRoy E. Quintard of Lawton.

Joseph Berger, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Berger, route 2, Sioux City, has been promoted from private first class to corporal technician in the army. He is in Australia.

Robert E. Casey, 2613 w. Third Street, has enlisted for flight training in the navy air force. He will be ordered to report at the navy preflight school at Iowa City to begin training which leads to navy wings. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Casey of Los Angeles.

Technical Sergeant Eugene P. Harper, former Sioux Cityan and son of Dr. and Mrs. C. C. Herren of Springfield, Missouri now is stationed at Camp Adair, Oregon, where he is undergoing training as a radio technician. Sergeant Harper resided a greater portion of his life in Sioux City, coming here with his parents when 3 years old and attending school, including Central. He was a member of the National Guard here. His father, Dr. Herren was a physician here for several years.

Richard S. Juzek has been graduated from the navy training school for machinist’s mates at the North Dakota State School of Science at Wahpeton, North Dakota.

John L. McKenna, 2311 Pierce Street, has arrived at the army reception center at Fort Logan, Colorado, for training.

Staff Sergeant Robert Bramble, son of Mr. and Mrs. O. G. Bramble, 2725 Ross Street, has arrived in England. Word that their son, who is in the army air corps, has reached a foreign shore was received here by his parents.

Mrs. Clara Bramble, 1845 S. Lemon Street has received word that her son, Staff Sergeant Wayne S. Bramble, has landed safely in England. Sergeant Bramble said he had received seven letters from his mother soon after arrival.

Fred E. Brimmer, former member of the Sioux City police force, is spending a 10-day furlough at home, 2211 28th Street, with his family, after a short visit with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. AF. A. Brimmer of Marshalltown, Iowa. He is stationed at Cincinnati, Ohio where he is a boatswain’s mate, second class.

Murrish Yanney, son of Very Rev. M. M. Yanney and Mrs. Yanney, has been promoted from private first class to sergeant in the army air corps at Hobbs, N. M. He has been in the army five months. Very Rev. Father Yanney is pastor of St. Thomas Syrian Orthodox Church.

Dale A. Berke, formerly of Oakland, California has been promoted to first class petty officer in the navy air corps according to word received by his wife, Mrs. Dale A. Berke, 121 Alice Street Petty Officer Berke enlisted in the navy reserve in February, 1941.

Private Jerome Tracy will return to Camp Funston, Kansas, Sunday after spending a 15-day furlough with his mother, Mrs. Jennie Tracy and sister, Cecelia, at the home of his aunt, Miss Anna Tracy, 912 Grandview Boulevard.

Dick Haviland, a cook in the army has been promoted from corporal to sergeant at Duncan field, San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Mrs. Jack Neuman, 410 13th Street.

Aviation Cadet Hayward K. Schandorff, son of T. J. Schandorff, 1414 Myrtle Street is receiving bombardier training at Ellington field, Texas.

Sergeant Lee Tinker, who has been in Ireland since March with the A. E. F., has arrived in the United States for officer’s training at Camp Croft, Spartansburg, South Carolina, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Tinker, 3415 Dupont Street, have been informed.

Another son, First Sergeant Fred Tinker, who entered the army with his brother as member of the National Guard here and went to Ireland with him, remained there. The two brothers served in the National Guard five years.

Sergeant Lee Tinker is spending a furlough with his wife and son at Forest Hill, La. Mrs. Tinker is the daughter of Mrs. Bertha Hansen of South Sioux City.

Cadet Carroll R. Dean, son of Gail Dean, a former Sioux Cityan, has entered the navy preflight school at St. Mary’s College, Moraga, California. Cadet Dean was born in Sioux City and after finishing West Junior school, moved to Spokane, Washington.

Mrs. Fred Coffey, 2103 Nash Street, has received a letter from her son, Corporal William C. McClain, announcing his wife arrival somewhere in England with United States army forces. He enlisted in the army six months ago.

Robert E. Beblington, a former Sioux Cityan, has graduated from the quartermaster Candidate School at Camp Lee, Virginia, with a commission as a second lieutenant according to word received by his mother, Mrs. A. Beblington, 1510 Geneva Street. Lieut. Beblington will be stationed at Fort Worth, Texas.

Aviation Cadet Vernise G. Polly, son of Mr and Mrs. F. G. Polly, 518 S. Helen Street, has been classified as a pilot at Nashville, Tennessee. He has been sent to Maxwell field, Alabama for his preflight training. Cadet Polly was transferred to the air corps from the heavy artillery where he has been in service since August 1941. He was a graduate of East High School and a former Journal carrier.

Lieut. Donald E. Calmer, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Calmer, 3050 Stone Park Boulevard, who has been attending signal corps officers school of electronics’ at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, has enrolled at Harvard University for further instruction. Lieut. Calmer is a graduate of Central High School and Iowa State College.

Robert E. Murphy, a former East High student, has enlisted in the marine corps and is stationed at San Diego, California. He is a son of Mrs. Fern M. Cunningham of Lake Park, Iowa, a former resident here.

Carl J. Siekaniec, a son of Mr. and Mrs. W E. Siekaniec, 2609 Macomb Avenue, has been made a corporal in the armored force unit at Camp Campbell, Kentucky. He enlisted July 22 and went to Camp Perry, Ohio. His father once was chef in the Austrian army under the regime of Emperor Franz Josef. He came to the United States November 29, 1913. The junior Siekaniec attended East High School and Trinity College.
