Auto Accidents Lead: Veteran Congressman, Most Distinguished Citizen Called

Most prominent of the many residents of this community who died during 1933 was Congressman, Gilbert N. Haugen, who succumbed at his home here on July 18.  Tragic deaths included H Evans Gray, who was killed when struck by a car in Des Moines on March 23, Mrs. Ida Rasmussen and son, Peter, who were killed when a passenger train struck their car in Northwood on August 2, and J. M. Ferneau, who fell from a ladder at Hanlontown on August 2 and was fatally injured.  Emil Buehrer, of Swansville, Minn., burned to death at Grafton when the home of his brother was destroyed by fire.  Robert Rodringes, Manly Mexican, was fatally injured when his truck was struck by a train at Manly on November 13. JANUARY
2 – Mrs. Augusta M. Blackmore, 89, resident of Worth County 65 years, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. W. Sanders.  F. L. Davis, 72, died at his home northeast of Northwood.  Mrs. Herman Zarling, 81, died at the home of daughter, Mrs. Aug. Mittag, near Myrtle.
5 – Mrs. Ingri Peterson, 83, died at her home near Hanlontown.
8 – Mrs. Christine Storvick, 79, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Bertha Knutson, Northwood.  Mrs. Andrew Gardner, 29, former Deer Creek Township resident, died at Naeve hospital, Albert Lea.
10 – Henry Madson, 74, Emmons, died at Naeve hospital, Albert Lea.
15 – George DeMaris, 64, Meltonville, died at a hospital in Cherokee.
29 – Mrs. C. Julius Johnson, 51, died at her home near Meltonville.
30 – H. V. W. Fleming, 57, former Northwood resident, died at Tacoma, Wash.

FEBRUARY
1 – Julianna Bakken, 47, died at the home of her parents after years of ill health.
3 – Mrs. F. J. Wagner, 70, former Northwood resident and school teacher, died at the home of her daughter in Minneapolis.
8 – Mrs. Ole Tostenson, 85, died at her home in Kensett.
9 – T. N. Flaten, 69, died at his home near Emmons.
11 – P. A. Peterson, 69, Freeborn County representative, residing near Emmons, died suddenly at St. Paul.
14 – D. Rhodenbaugh, early resident of Barton Township, died at his home in Los Angeles.
17 – Wm. F. Braun, 84, native of Germany and former Grenadier in German Imperial Army, died at home of his daughter in Grafton.
20 – Ole Stromley, 80, died at home of his son west of Northwood.
21 – Frank J. Yesek, 69, died at Manly.
26 – Mrs. Henry Benjegerdes, 61, died suddenly at her home near Manly.
28 – E. J. Sharon, early Northwood resident, died at Prairie du Chien, Wis.

MARCH
1 – Mrs. Iver Harmon, 85, Worth County resident for 63 years, died at her home in Kensett.  C. C. Jacobson, 81, former Worth County resident, died in Minneapolis.  Frank N. Nyo, early Northwood resident, died at Idaho Falls, Idaho.
3 – T. T. Ramsey, 79, died at his home near Joice.
5 – Mrs. A. Mitchell Sr., 80, a native of Scotland, died at her home in Northwood following a lingering illness.
6 – Knute Knutson died at his brother’s home near Meltonville.
12 – Mrs. Andrew Johnson, 79, died at his home in Fertile.
13 – O. R. Johnson, 77, Freeborn County pioneer, died at his home in Northwood.
15 – Mrs. Gurl Ode, 91, died at her Silver Lake Township home.
21 – K. A. Mostrom, 68, Worth County resident 50 years, died at home of his daughter, Mrs. A. R. Trenda, in Northwood.
23 – H. Evans Gray, 24, native Kensett boy, killed by an auto in Des Moines.
25 – Mrs. Ole S. Rue, 69, native of Worth County, died at her home here.
26 – Rev. L. E. Kleppe, 68, Lutheran pastor at Joice, died in a Mason City hospital following an operation.  George Strate died at his home near Gordonsville.
31 – N. B. Dorman, 41, Northwood rural mail carrier, accidentally drowned in Shell Rock River when his boat was carried over the mill dam.

APRIL
4 – Mrs. H. H. Wiley, 93, pioneer of Deer Creek Township, died at home of a daughter in Vinton.
8 – Mrs. Howard Cady, 77, early resident of Kensett, died at home of a daughter in Rockwell.
17 – Mrs. James Beighly, 49, died at her home in Gordonsville.
18 – Ole T. Groe, 73, native of Silver Lake Township and prominent Lake Mills resident, died in a hospital at Mason City.
20 – Lyle Naram, 22, died at a hospital in Northfield, Minn., of peritonitis following an appendicitis operation experienced two weeks earlier.
25 – Dr. C. R. Heiny, 45, died at his home here following an illness of 2 years.
26 – Fred Zarbrock, 60, prominent resident of Manly, died suddenly at his home there.
28 – Mrs. Casper Urbatch, 58, died at her home in Grafton.
29 – Gilma Holstad, 23, died at a hospital in Mason City of peritonitis after an illness of three weeks.

MAY
6 – Emil Buehrer, 58, of Swanville, Minn., burned to death when the home of his brother, Carl Buehrer, near Grafton, was destroyed by fire.
10 – Austin Sorenson, 70, Worth County resident 40 years, died at his home near Joice.
11 – Mrs. C. H. Beckett, 56, well known Northwood resident, died at Indianapolis, Ind.
18 – Mrs. F. D. True, 50, Des Moines, former Northwood resident, killed in auto accident in Oklahoma.
20 – Mrs. Julia Marley, 74, died at the home of her sister, Mrs. Rachel Foster.
25 – Mrs. Milton Beighley, 56, died at her home in Gordonsville.
29 – Tom Evans, 72, resident of the Joice vicinity for 43 years, died at his home near Joice.

JUNE
1 – Nels Thorson, 81, pioneer Northwood druggist, died at his home here following illness of a few days.
6 – Ole J. Truftedahl, 82, died suddenly of heart disease at his home southwest of Northwood. Miss Jane Buchanan, 86, died at the home of Mrs. Mary Seuser Pixley in Northwood; one of the first teachers of Worth and Freeborn Counties.  Mrs. B. Mandsager, 59, Fertile, died in Mason City hospital.
17 – Berge Gunderson, 95, Worth County resident for 65 years, died at his home near Meltonville.
22 – C. Cleophas, 86, pioneer Kensett business man, died at Forest City.
24 – Mrs. Otto Buechele, 40, died at her home in Grafton.
26 – Mrs. Emma Nack, 72, died at her home in Grafton.  Mrs. John Frietag, 81, died at her home west of Kensett.
27 – B. M. Mandsager, 68, of Fertile, died in a hospital in Albert Lea just 21 days after the death of his wife.
30 – Mrs. E. I. Butler, 70, died at her home in Northwood, ill 10 days following a stroke.

JULY
3 – Earl Patterson, 80, former Worth County resident, died at a Fort Dodge hospital after an operation for a ruptured appendix.
4 – Levor T. Johnson, 56, died suddenly at his farm home southwest of Northwood following a brief period of ill health.
6 – Lillian Wahl, 12, of Grafton, died at a hospital in Rochester from lockjaw which developed from a sliver in her foot.
8 – Mrs. Emma Brunsvold, 68, died at a hospital in Rochester from an operation, the third experienced in about a year.
12 – Herbrand Grosland, 79, Kensett, died at the home of his daughter in Iowa City.
17 – Ole Foley, 62, a resident of the Northwood vicinity all his life, died suddenly at his home near Northwood as he was about to go to the field to work.
18 – Gilbert N. Haugen, 74, a member of the national house of representatives for 34 years, Iowa’s best known statesman and Northwood’s most distinguished citizen, died at his home here after several weeks of illness.
26 – Oscar Low, 66, at Northwood merchant for more than 37 years, died at his home after an extended period of ill health.
30 – Peter Larson, 78, died at his home near Joice.

AUGUST
2 – Mrs. Ida Rasmussen, 52, and her son, Peter, 8, instantly killed in an auto-train crash in Northwood.
20 – L. M. Guidinger, 44, native of this vicinity, died at a Minneapolis hospital after a brief illness.
21 – John Nelson, 90, former Northwood resident, died at his home in Glenville.
22 – Mrs. Alvin L. Anderson, 25, Kensett, died at an Albert Lea hospital.
23 – August Bork, 70, died at his home in Grafton following a stroke.
25 – Ole G. Meland, 69, died in a Mason City hospital following an operation.
29 – Mrs. Peter C. Eide, 89, Worth County resident for 60 years, died at her home in Northwood.

SEPTEMBER
4 – August Stehn, 84, Worth County resident for 58 years, died at the home of his daughter in Barton Township.  Amos Sanden, 69, died at his home near Joice.
9 – Martin Reinsmoen, 76, Worth County resident for 65 years, died at his home near Joice.
14 – Mrs. Andrew Walsen, 69, pioneer Northwood resident, died at her home near here as the result of a stroke.
20 – John Nelson, 76, died at his home in Gordonsville; was an early resident of that vicinity.
23 – Mrs. Oscar Low, 60, died at the Naeve hospital in Albert Lea after an operation.  Albert Olson, 75, died as a result of a paralytic stroke experienced four days earlier.
25 – Ole Nilsen, 89, pioneer Worth County Lutheran minister, died at his home in Grand Forks, N. D.

OCTOBER
8 – J. H. Logeman, 74, early resident of Meltonville, died at his home in Northwood.
10 – J. M. Ferneau, 85, Hanlontown, died in Mason City hospital as a result of injuries received Oct. 2 in a fall from a ladder while wrecking an old building in Hanlontown.
13 – Gladys Arlene Wolff, 13, died at her home near Northwood after an illness of 8 weeks from inflammatory rheumatism.
23 – Mrs. Henry Heimke, 94, died at the home of her daughter in Grafton.
27 – E. L. Brua, 70, lifelong resident of Freeborn and Worth Counties, died at his home near Emmons.
30 – Mrs. Sofie Michaelson, 85, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. T. Sigmond, in Kensett.

NOVEMBER
2 – Rev. W. A. Hanscom, former pastor of the Northwood M. E. Church and World War Y.M.C.A. worker, died at his home in Marion, Iowa.
9 – J. H. Hilborn, 77, Worth County resident 44 years, died at the home of his son, H. G. Hilborn, in Northwood.
10 – Mrs. Carrie Anderson, 90, died at the home of her daughter in Fertile.
13 – Albert Hanson, 64, native of Worth County, died suddenly at his home in Bristol Township.
17 – G. C. Dahl, 54, a resident of Bristol Township all his life, died at his home near Joice.
21 – Mrs. Lars Madson, 83, died at her home in Hartland Township, where she had resided for 50 years.  Mrs. Thomas Julson, 69, a resident of Northwood for 50 years, died at her home here.
27 – Erick Kvale, 86, died at his home in Brookfield Township.
29 – Mrs. Ida Welland Florentz, 53, died at the home of a brother near Joice.
30 – Nils Gylleck, 69, died suddenly of a stroke at his home in Kensett.  Mrs. Charles Brebner, 89, early resident of Worth County, died at her home in San Diego, Calif.

DECEMBER
1 – Dow Simmonds, 82, early business man of Northwood, former banker and mayor, died at the home of a sister in Eldon, Iowa.
6 – Mrs. R. P. Johnson, 74, who was born on the homestead of her parents near Northwood and who had lived in this vicinity all her life, died at the home of her son in Northwood after a period of ill health extending over more than 10 years.
7 – Charles Schultz, 77, died at his home in Grafton.
12 – Toris Throne, 76, a resident of this vicinity all his life, died at his home northeast of Northwood.
14 – William Tabbert, 59, died suddenly at his home in Kensett.
15 – L. O. Brown, 66, Northwood druggist for a number of years, died suddenly at his home in Osage.  Mrs. Homer Doolittle, 83, pioneer Northwood resident, died at the home of her daughter near Gordonsville.
23 – John H. Johnson, 77, a resident of Hartland Township for nearly 75 years, died at his home after an illness of one year.
26 – Mrs. Iver Holt, 83, died at her home in Silver Lake Township after an illness of four days from pneumonia.
