LOCATED IN WOODBURY COUNTY, LIBERTY TOWNSHIP, THIS CEMETERY IS
SITUATED IN THE NORTHWEST TIP OF SECTION 16 AND THE N0RTHEAST
TIP OF SECTION IS.   IT IS MIDWAY BETWEEN THE COMMUNITIES OF SEACEANT
BLUFF AND SALIX ON HIGHWAY 970 ALSO KNOWN AS OLD HIGHWAY 75, THEN
EAST ON D51, NORTH ON BENTON ST.  ONE HALF MILE.

THIS POSSIBLY WAS THE FIRST BURIAL GROUND OF THE PREDOMINANTLY
FRENCH SETTLERS IN THIS GENERAL AREA.   THE INSCRIPTIONS ON MANY
OF THE STONES ARE WRITTEN IN FRENCH.   THE CEMETERY IS DIVIDED -INTO
TWO SECTIONS, PROTESTANT NORTHSIDE AND CATHOLIC SOUTHSIDE.

UNFORTUNATELY, YEARS AGO LIVESTOCK WAS ALLOWED TO ROAM IN THE
CEMETERY AND STONES IN BOTH SIDES WERE DISLODGED AND BROKEN. AN
ATTEMPT TO CLEAN UP THE CEMETERY WAS MADE BY MEN FROM ST. JOSEPHS
PARISH IN 5ALIX.     SINCE NO RECORDS EXIST, THEY WERE UNABLE TO
REPLACE THE STONES PROPERLY AND PILED THEM TOGETHER BETWEEN THE
TWO SECTIONS.   THE WEIGHT HAS CAUSED THE STONES TO SINK   INTO THE
GROUND AND ALTHOUGH AN EFFORT WAS MADE IN  1977 TO LOCATE THEM ALL
SOME NO DOUBT REMAIN BURIED.  SEVERAL WERE TOO BADLY SHATTERED TO
PIECE TOGETHER.

ST.   JOSEPHS CATHOLIC CHURCH OPENED A NEW CEMETERY IN  1908 ON THE
WEST SIDE OF SALIX, IOWA SOME GRAVES WERE MOVED FROM LIBERTY
CEMETERY TO THE NEW ONE.   IT IS UNKNOWN IF GRAVES WERE MOVED FROM
THE PROTESTANT SIDE TO OTHER CEMETERIES.
