"Woodbury County was established and boundaries defined by Chapter 9 of the laws of the Third General Assembly, approved January 15, 1851. The name given it by that act of the Legislature was “Wahkaw”. The name “Wahkaw” is from the Sioux Indian language and means ‘big medicine’. Fifty counties were created in Iowa by that act."
