Fort Atkinson was a federal military post 1840-1849. The first permanent white settlers, Hamilton Campbell & Gottlob Krumm, arrived in Winneshiek County in 1848. Decorah's first settlers William Painter and the John Day family arrived in 1849. Also in 1849, Joseph Spielmann settled where Bohemian immigrants would make Spillville prosper. An Election was held on the first Monday in April, 1851. The purpose of this election was to select a county seat. Three towns were on the Ballot Moneek, Decorah and Lewiston. The hands down favorite was Moneek. However, Decorah was selected. Samuel Belding and Daniel Wheeler built a hotel in Burr Oak in 1851.Frank Teabout founded Frankville in 1851. |
