"Ellen J. Ryan, known as Nellie, was born on October 12, 1873 in Fort
Dodge, Iowa.
She died on April 17, 1923.
Ellen (Nellie) Joseph O’Brien Ryan is the great granddaughter of John O’Connor, Sr. and Elizabeth (Furlong) O’Connor,
both from Wexford Ireland, the granddaughter of Nicholas O’Connor, from Wexford
Ireland, and Hannah Hickey O’Connor, and the daughter of William O’Brien and Catherine
“Kitty” (O’Connor) O’Brien. She was well known and highly regarded for her efforts
for the residents at the County Home(the Webster County Home operated by her and
her husband, James W. Ryan). She passed away on April 17, 1921, from complications
brought on by pneumonia and typhoid. Her obituary provided the following account:
”News of Mrs. Ryan’s death comes as a great shock to her wide circle of friends,
who had held hopes for her recovery but by none more keenly felt than by the inmates
of the county home. They were in tears last evening when the news reached them.
Billy Skinner, one of the oldest, said when he heard of Mrs. Ryan’s death: ’Isn’t
it too bad that it couldn’t have been me instead of her.’ Others wanted to leave
immediately.” [Fort Dodge Messenger, April 18, 1921]. " |

" John Thomas Ryan, Sr.
John T. Ryan was born in Owego, New York on June 13, 1868.
He traveled to Badger, Iowa as an infant in 1868.
He was three years old when his Father Thomas died in October, 1871.
On January 28, 1899 John married Ellen (Nellie) O'Connor, at Corpus Christi Parish in Fort Dodge, Iowa.
John T. was the family member who remained on the Ryan family farm just outside of Badger, Iowa until he took ill
with cancer, at which time he moved himself and his family into Fort Dodge. He passed
away on April 12, 1916.
John T. Ryan was very active in the local politics of Webster County. He had served as County Treasurer, and as
a Supervisor on the Webster County Board of Supervisors.
Some time in approximately 1914, John T. Ryan, Sr. was diagnosed with cancer, to which he ultimately succumbed in
spite of extensive consultations at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. His
obituary also states, “He was well aware that his earthly career was fast drawing
