In the 1872 map of Warren County, Township 77N, Range 24W (Greenfield Township), on the bottom of the page, John Handley is listed as the proprietor of a steam saw mill in section 35.

From Des Moines, Iowa - The subject of this notice, Bro. John Handley, son of Moses and Nancy (Bell) Handley, was born in Harrison County, Ohio, Feb 27, 1814, died at his home near Somerset, Iowa, Dec. 24, 1893, thus only lacking two months and three days of being eighty years of age. He was sick only about ten days. Up to the time of his catching cold, which developed into pneumonia which resulted in his death. He was quite robust. He became a member of the Church Of Christ while in Ohio, and has ever been a great reader of the Bible, his guide. This he read without the aid of glasses. He realized that his sickness would be fatal and said to his wife, "I am going home: I wish you could go along." He was married to Esther Croskey, who has shared with him the struggles of life, and who, with loss of a faithful husband and father. but they, too, are followers of Him who "Is The Resurrection," and "Mourn not as those without Hope."
The Funeral Services were conducted by the writer December 26, 1893. Bro. Handley being an Old Settler and Dearly Beloved, a large crowd assembled in token of Respect. Written by S.H.Givler

John Handley died last Sunday afternoon after an illness of only a few days.  Deceased was an old resident of Warren County and at the time of his death was in his eightieth year.  Funeral services were held at his home Tuesday morning.  He was buried in North River Cemetery
