Braucht's Mill

Daniel Braucht was born in 1823 in Dolphin County, Pennsylvania. He was working as a blacksmith in Holmes County, Mississippi when he married Mary E. Thompson on Oct 20, 1850. On Dec 20th that same year, Daniel purchased nearly 311 acres of land in White Oak Township, Warren County, Iowa.. His land included the lower half of section 30 on which he built a water powered mill on South River running through his property. Daniel and Mary had two daughters; one born in Mississippi and one born in Iowa. Mary died in 1856 and Daniel married Elizabeth Sayres in Warren County in 1857. No other map of Warren County shows the Braucht Mill (as seen in the above 1859 map). In the 1860 census, Daniel is listed as a farmer. Elizabeth and Daniel had 12 children between 1858-1878. At age 76 Daniel suddenly died, while sitting in his chair at home, Dec 23,1899, and was buried in Hewitt Cemetery. The old homestead was sold in 1910 while Elizabeth went to Mitchell, South Dakota to take care of her grandchildren. She died Feb 19, 1915 and was buried with Daniel in Hewitt Cemetery.
