    The W.T.C.U. about 1874

Catholic in spirit and self-sacrificing in the work of improvement and betterment of society. She with Dr H B Thrall and Mrs George Bowen of Ottumwa, organized the WCTU. She was a number of years the vice Presd and Secty and later the Pres'd; also did a large amount of work in the state with the grand State President, Mrs James Ellen Foster, a lawyer of Cedar Rapids, Ia., and later of Washington, D.C.

They often traveled together organizing and giving courage together, to other women who seemed fainting and failing. Mrs Foser was a magnetic speaker and always gave a wonderful lecture to crowded houses, where ever she went. I remember on one occasion when Mrs Foster met my mother, she grabed her by the hand and in her low rich voice said, " God bless you, you dear old War horse, I do wish there were more like you for our grand work."  Indeed in these days it took much courage and a brave spirit to Light Rum. Not like today with people of larger vision who are working against it. I have seen good Christian folds laugh and jeer the splendid cause of these good women, who were trying prayerfully to put down the scourge. There were 99 saloons and two large wholesale houses in our little city, it took brave women and women who loved humanity to face this issue.
