Ingram, Hugh C., 1876 - 1966; ss Nora; section 2

Ingram, Hugh C. - Hugh C. Ingram, son of Laban and Mary Robbins Ingram, was born Jan 15, 1876 in Page County, Ia. He departed this life Sept 23, 1966 at Clarinda Municipal Hospital. He was 90 years, 8 months, and 8 days old at the time of his departing.

Hugh grew to manhood within one-half mile of the place of his birth. He attended Liggett School near his home.

On Feb 20, 1901, he was united in marriage to Nora B. Neely. To this union seven children were born: Carroll of New Market; Lawrence of Gravity; Lona, (Mrs Merrel Fulk) of Clarinda; Dale of New Market; Ruth (Mrs Kenneth Bales) of Villa Park, Ill; Archie Laverne and Elsie Marie who both were taken in childhood.

Mrs Ingram preceded Hugh in death on June 5, 1961. Sixty blissful and fruitful years were spent together. Their life was always one of togetherness. They shared many hardships as well as those of their neighbors, friends, and relatives. Flood, fire, accidents, tornado injuries, and violent death was a part of their sharing, but each time they arose to face their abstacles together.

Hugh was an active Mason for 46 years. He was respected as a man of honor, and was vigorous until a few weeks before he was stricken. A part of his life story was published in area newspapers. He loved the farm and could be seen working with cattle or checking the crops until he was forced by sickness to be in the house. His highest joy was his family. He loved to speak of his sons and daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His home was always a place of reunion and good times for his beloved family.

Those left to treasure his memory include his sons, daughters, their wives and husbands; six grandchildren, on of which, Bonnie, was reared for 3 years in the home of Hugh and Nora; 20 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, and other relatives. He leaves also a multitude of friends.

With Hugh's passing one of the early citizens of Page County is gone. He was also the last of nine children. Many will remember his kindnesses, friendly conversation, and droll expressions. Hugh will be missed greatly by all and a great vacancy is left but many wonderful memories help to fill the void.

Funeral services were conducted from the Walker Funeral Home at 2 pm Tuesday, Sept 27, 1966, with Preacher Glen Mitchell in charge. Soloist was Rosevelyn Bashor and organist was Aletha L. Hutchings. Casket bearers were Charles Hookham, Alvin Ingram, Eldon Ingram, Lowell Ingram, Eddie Ingram, and Delbert Rupp. Burial was in the Memory Cemetery near New Market. Iowa.

Johnson, Clifford - The body of Clifford Johnson at last rests on the soil of his country, for whom he gave his life in defending its honor.

His body arrived here Saturday afternoon and the following day memorial services were held in the park at 1:30 p.m., conducted by Rev Burns of the Clarinda Christian church. The services were in charge of the American Legion and Clifford was given a full military burial in Memory cemetery. There are no more boys from this community resting on foreign soil.

The services Sunday were attended by a large concourse of people and the flowers were many and beautiful, by the ladies auxiliary, the Legion and friends.

Mrs Catherine Johnson, mother of Clifford, desires the Herald to convey her sincere thanks for the many flowers and floral offerings.

Clifford, the son of Mrs Eli Johnson, was born Jan 1, 1898, near New Marekt, Ia. He, the youngest son of the family, entered the service of his country at Villisca, Ia., August 1917. He was assigned to Co F, 168th Inf of the Rainbow Division, and served with this organization until July 26, 1918. On this date, as his platoon was forming to go "Over the top," Clifford was instantly killed by a high Explosive shell. His outfit was in action at Chateau Thierry, near Croix Rouge Earm, at the fatal hour of his death.

His departure from this life was sudden and untimely. He was in the joy of his youth, always ready to lend a helping hand and help along with a jest and a cheerful smile.

He was laid to rest, by his "comrades in arms," in grave No. 18-A, Map of Condi-en-brie, where he peacefully slept, until this nation was prepared to give its honored dead a more fitting interment in their native soil.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his mother, three sisters and one brother; his father, one sister, and one brother having preceded him to that bourne from whence no man ever returns. New Market Herald, July 21, 1921

Jackson, Clara Patterson, 1854 - 1922; section 2

Obituary - Early Wednesday morning the angel of death laid his paralyzing hand on one of the grandest mothers the sun ever shown on, in the person of Mrs Clara Jackson, and after a short struggle carried her away.

Mrs Jackson arose that morning about six o'clock, stirred the fire and called her two sons, and then laid down again. Soon the boys arose and one of them began fixing the fire when the mother called to not make any more fire as she was so warm she could scarcely breathe. Hastening to her they found she was sinking rapidly. A physician was quickly summoned but his assistance was unavailing and she passed to the great beyond at about eight o'clock.

For more than forty years she had been a resident of this community and was loved and respected by all. Home was her ideal, and how well she succeeded is best evidenced by the love and veneration accorded her by her sons.

For many years she had not enjoyed the best of health, but was able to be about most of the time, and her death came as a great shock to her family and friends.

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at two o'clock in the M.E. church, conducted by Rev J. Owen Smith, assisted by Rev Field. Interment was in Memory cemetery.

Clara Patterson Jackson, daughter of John and Mary Patterson, was born in Owenville, Clearmont county, Ohio, July 7, 1854. In the spring of 1882 she removed with her parents to New Market, Iowa, and on the 11th day of February, 1883 she was married to A.C. Jackson of Hawleyville, Iowa. To this union were born two sons, Dale and Lloyd, who survive her.

In young womanhood she confessed faith in Christ and united with the Methodist church, in whose communion she remained to the end.

Her husband preceded her to eternity on Feb 24, 1908.

She departed this life December 28, 1922, at her late home two miles north of New Market, aged 68 years, five months and twenty days. She leaves to mourn their loss, two sons, Dale and Lloyd, both of New Market, a step daughter, Mrs L.E. Bassett of Pala Alto, Ca., one sister, Mrs N.S. Goudie of clarinda, and many friends. Long, Rebecca Ellen Cavender Barnum - Mrs Rebecca Ellen Long, the object of this sketch, descended from an old Southern family, and was born in the City of Paris in the State of Kentucky on the 4th day of March 1839.

Her parents died in her infancy, and being left alone in the world, she went to reside with her brother in St Joseph, Mo., where she attended school and graduated from St Joseph's Academy for women. She continued to reside in St Joseph, Mo., until her marriage to Wm E. Barnum in Oct 1859. She and her husband continued to reside there until 1863 when they removed to Clarinda Iowa, where Mr Barnum enlisted in the Union Army. He was killed at Centralia, Mo., by Anderson's band of guerrillas on the 23rd day of September 1864. He was a brave soldier and faced death with out a tremor and died like a brave soldier.

Three children were born to them, two of whom, Viola and William, died in infancy, Celestia, C. Barnum now Mrs B.F. Farrell resides in Page county, Iowa.

After Mr Barnum's death she continued to reside in Clarinda until her marriage with Jasper Long, which occurred on the 27th day of December 1866 with whom she lived very happily, until his death, which occurred on their farm in East River Page county, on the 11th day of December 1904.

Six children were the fruits of their marriage: Ira D. Long of Clarinda; Carrie O. now Mrs S. Ingram of Siam; Florence A. now Mrs A.R. Snoderly of Greely, Colo.; and Minnie A. now Mrs Harley T. Pace of New Market; and Charles and James, who died in infancy.

Mrs Long continued to reside on the farm for some years, when the dwelling was destroyed by fire, since then she has resided alternately among her children by all of whom she was loved and venerated.

Mrs Long was one of those ladies of the (old school) whom it is always a pleasure to meet and converse, her beauty of mind her strength of character and her sweet disposition greatly endeared her to all who came in contact with her, and through a long life of usefulness there has never been a person who had any word but praise for her. Her kindly sympathetic voice and cheering words made her a joy and adornament to the homes of her children. Her trustful unassuming piety, and her childlike trust in God who doeth all things well, impressed one with the thought that she grew up from the innocence of childhood into mature womanhood like the beautiful rose bud that gradually unfolds into the beautiful full blown rose of the Christian life, giving forth the odor of its sanctiety to the passer by.

About the first of January 1916, Mrs Long suffered a stroke of creeping paralysis, which was not considered serious at that time, but the insideous disease gradually grew worse and worse. Everything that latented physicians could do to allay the progress of the disease was unavailing, she realized that she must soon die. She bore her sufferings with christian fortitude, and when she knew that her sun of life would soon set forever, she called a young minister of long acquaintence to her beside, not to pray but to sing of her trust in Him who died that she might live.

On the 26th day of February A.D. 1916, at the home of her youngest daughter, Mrs Harley T. Pace, in New Market, her bedside surrounded by all her living children, she passed away, with a serene smile on her face, aged seventy-six years, eleven months and twenty-six years.

Funeral services were held from the home Monday afternoon at 2:00, conducted by Rev R.E. Snodgrass of Savannah, Mo., assisted by Elder Robb. Interment was made at Memory cemetery. New Market Herald Mar 2, 1916
