Barker, Jesse -

Jesse Barker, the third child of James and Sarah (Hocker) Barker was born on July 1, 1912 in Schuyler County, Mo. His father moved his family to Iowa after Jesse's mother died, when he was about four years old. He departed this life December 3, 1991 at his home in Lenox after a few months of terminal cancer.

On October 21, 1929 Jesse was united in marriage to Erla Hegwood. They farmed most of their married life until 1964 when Jesse was employed by the Lenox Community School as janitor and bus driver. He held that position until his retirement in 1976. Jesse and

Erla moved to their present home in 1976 where they celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary on October 21, 1991. Four children were born to this union.

He became a member of the Christian Church.

Jesse was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Elmer and Luell; one sister, Ethel Spring and his loving daughter, Linda Hogan

White.

Survivors include his wife, Erla; son, Donald and wife Maralyn; daughters, Beverly Hogue and husband Claude, Wilma Hayes and husband

Richard; brother, Ellis and wife Lula; son-in-law, E. Nealon White; brothers-in-law, Leland Hegwood and wife Dorothy and Carl Spring.

Grandchildren are Barbara Rauch, Sandra O'Riley and Steven, children of Donald; Ricky, Mark, Randy, Matthew, Debbie Walley, and Christine Hinshaw, children of Beverly, Kim Jeffrey, Cathy Hall and Russell, children of Wilma; Lory, Michele, Melissa, Denise,

children of Linda Hogan White. There are 30 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews who survive.

Funeral services were held December 7, 1991 at Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Lenox with Rev. Max Nelson officiating.

Music was furnished by Leta Crowell. Casket bearers were Vernal Thompson, Paul Parkhurst, Ron Fulk, Larry Schrader, Bob Brown, Norbert Bradley. Honorary bearers were Donald Tully, Lavaughn Howard, Bob Manroe. Interment was in North Fairview Cemetery in Lenox.

Blair, Helen Frances Sproul -

Funeral services for Helen Frances Blair were held Tuesday, Sept. 10, 1991 at the United Presbyterian Church in Lenox with Rev. Don Fisher officiating. Burial was at North Fairview Cemetery, Lenox, Iowa.

Helen Frances Blair, the sixth of seven children of Charles and Frances Adele Miller Sproul, was born on September 5, 1918 at Fontanelle, Iowa. Following a four month hospitalization, she entered into rest at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa

on her birthday, at 78 years of age. [September 5, 1991]

As a child, Helen moved with her family to Hugo, Colo. Following graduation from Hugo High School in 1932, she worked at Ft. Logan Army Base in Denver, before returning to her native state of Iowa.

On April 1, 1939 she was united in marriage with Erskine Blair at College Springs, Iowa. Since that time, the couple has made their home in Lenox, where they raised their daughter, Delia Ann.

Helen was preceded in, death by her parents, one sister Bernice Davison, four brothers, Berle, Dean, Eugene, and James; two brothers-in-law George Davison and David Kenagy, and a sister-in-law Roberta Blair.

Those surviving to honor her memory are her husband, Erskine; her daughter and son-in-law Delia Ann and Tom Fleetwood one sister Fae Kenagy, two brothers-in-law Francis and Paul Blair and one sister-in-law, Daisy Blair. Also surviving are her five nieces, seven nephews, their families and a host of friends.

Helen was an active member of the Lenox United Presbyterian Church and PEO.

While her home and family always came first, she enjoyed gardening, sewing and the civic clubs and organizations in which she participated through the years.

Botkin, Charles William -

Funeral services for Charles William Botkin were held September 16, 1991 at Roland-Lindsay Golden Rule Funeral Home in Corning with

Rev. Carl Cummings officiating. Interment was at Stringtown Cemetery.

Charles William Botkin, son of Charles Stunner Botkin and Florence Staley Botkin, was born October 12, 1903 southwest of Prescott, Iowa and departed this life September 13, 1991 at Westgate Apartments in Corning at the age of 87 years, 11 months and one day.

He grew to maturity in the Carl, Iowa community where he attended the public school and was active in the various community

affairs.

On March 2, 1932 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth C. Mostert at Maryville, Mo. and they resided on farms in the Prescott-Stringtown area all of their married life. His wife, Elizabeth, passed away March 25, 1986.

To this union were born: Marjo, Ronald, James C., Gerald W., Kenneth D. and Sherry.

Mr. Botkin engaged in farming all of his active years and he enjoyed raising livestock and tilling the soil as his love for the land was a sharing experience in his life. He retired from the farm and moved to Corning, Iowa in 1978 and to Westgate in 1987 where he

continued to reside.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife of 54 years; two sons, Ronald and Kenneth; and one brother and one sister.

Left to cherish his memory are his children: a daughter, Marjo A. Brown of Kansas City, Mo.; a son, James C. Botkin and his wife Marylin of Des Moines, Iowa; a son, Gerald W. Botkin of Prescott, Iowa and a daughter, Sherry and her husband Malcome Rodrigues of

Kauaii, Hawaii; 16 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren; a sister, Elma May Sterns of Ft. Dodge, Iowa; other relatives and friends.

He was a member of the Stringtown (Federated) Community Church.

He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Bruner, Mildred Bender -

Mrs. John R. (Mildred) Bruner, a sister of the late Rollie Bender, passed away August 16, 1991 at her home in North Hollywood, California after a long illness.

Services were August 21, at Old North Church, Forrest Lawn, Hollywood Hills, California. She left one daughter, Betty Scott and husband, Bill, and two grandchildren, Judy and Bill. She was also a sister-in-law of Fred and Ava Bruner, Bernice Wiley,

Mariette Abarr, Alice Whitmore, Ruth and Karl Sundel, Mildred Matthews and Helen Lyddon.

DeyErmand, Leo D -

Leo D. DeyErmand, 99, of Grand Island, died Saturday, Sept. 14 in a Grand Island nursing home.

Services were Sept. 17 in the chapel of the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. William Doran officiated. Burial was at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. DeyErmand was born Aug. 21, 1892, at Traer, Iowa, to William and Lillian (Healy) DeyErmand. He was educated in Iowa. Leo resided in the farm home of Ott and Mayne Hill while attending school and growing up.

He married Ruth Scott on Feb. 11, 1915, at Creston, Iowa. They lived in Lenox, until moving to Kimball in 1918. Later that year they

moved to Grand Island.  The couple operated a local dairy farm for more than 30 years and delivered milk to the Grand Island area. Mr.

DeyErmand retired in 1970.

Mrs. DeyErmand died June 14, 1985. He continued to live in Grand Island until three weeks ago when he entered a local nursing home,

He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Farmers Bureau.

Survivors include one son, Dale DeyErmand of Grand Island; two daughters, Carrol Eveland of Grand Island and Helen Perkins of Silver

Springs, Md; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and nine great-greatgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, an infant son, a grandson, two brothers, William DeyErmand and Don DeyErmand, and three sisters, Vinnie, Ruth and Catherine.

Fletchall, O Hale -

Dr. O. Hale Fletchall, a pioneer researcher in chemical weed control, longtime M.U. educator and dedicated cattleman, died October 28 in a hospital in Columbia, Mo. He was 71.

Dr. Fletchall, a professor in the University of Missouri-Columbia agronomy department, taught field crops management and weed control

courses from 1954 to 1985 when he retired and was retained as professor emeritus.

He was born on a farm east of Grant City, Mo. May 4, 1920 to Oscar and Leona Fletchall. He was valedictorian of his class at Grant City

School, winning a scholarship to MU. He earned a degree in agriculture in 1942 and a doctoral degree in field crops in 1954. Results of his weed control research are known throughout the world. He was an honorary member of the North Central Weed Science Society and a fellow of the Weed Science Society of America, having served as an officer in both of them.

Dr. Fletchall and his wife, Helen, owned and operated the Lucky Land farm east of Columbia since 1956. They bred registered Polled Hereford cattle. In 1985 a show held by the American Polled Hereford Association was named the "Helen and Hale Fletchall Standard

of Perfection Polled Hereford Show," to honor the couples dedication to the Hereford industry.

Dr. Fletchall received training in the R.O.T.C. unit at the university, graduating as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army and was ranked as captain after serving in World War  II and the Korean conflict.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lois, and a son, James. Survivors include his wife, Helen, a sister, Mrs. C.E. Stark of Lenox, Iowa, and two brothers-in-law, Basil and Fred Reagel.

The funeral and burial was in Columbia, Mo. Mrs. Stark and cousins at Grant City planned to attend but were prevented by the recent storm.

Henderson, Mary Elizabeth (Bessie) McCain -

Mary Elizabeth (Bessie) McCain Henderson, oldest daughter of Alexander Ross and Mary Cordelia Thompson McCain, passed away at the Lenox Care Center on November 24 at the age of 98 years, three months and five days.

She was born at Lacona, Iowa, Warren County on August 19, 1893. She moved with her parents in 1900 to a farm east of Lenox, which is now the Harlan Riley home. There she grew to womanhood, graduating from Lenox High School in 1911. In 1916 she was graduated

from Monmouth College at Monmouth, Ill. Her two sisters and mother were also graduates of Monmouth College.

From 1919 to 1926 Bessie taught in Lenox. She also taught in the Clearfield, Sharpsburg, Conway and Greenfield school systems,

serving as high school principal at Greenfield. In 1933 she married Jay R. Henderson of Clearfield. The wedding took place on December 22 in the home of Bessie's friend and fellow teacher, Anna Turner.

Jay and Bessie made their home in Bedford during her husband's tenure of office as treasurer of Taylor County from 1934 to 1938. They moved to Lenox, Iowa in 1942 where they owned and operated the Gamble Store for 16 years. Jay designed their new home which

was constructed in 1969 at 409 W. Nebraska in Lenox. This remained Bessie's home until she entered the Lenox Care Center in November 1985.

Bessie was a lady of many talents and perhaps was best known for her "Chalk Talks" and chalk drawings. She painted most of the pictures in their home, also painting handmade draperies for their living-dining room area. She was known as a versatile artist. She

painted the carolers on a Christmas scene "Joy to the World" which she and Jay completed in 1962. This scene became the winner of the Kappa Zeta Christmas contest in 1980 and the same scene now adorns the yard of Lois Brown.

She was a life-long active supporter member of the Presbyterian Church serving it in many capacities, teacher, board member, choir, women groups, etc. Bessie was a full-time volunteer being honored with the "Volunteer of the Year" award by the Federated Women's Club of Taylor County. Bessie was active in many organizations; charter member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, M.F.C., Republican Women's Club, Jolly Time Senior Citizens. She served as volunteer at the Lenox Library, was county chairman of the Iowa Federated Women's Club, served on the Taylor County Cancer Board, charter member of the Taylor County Historical Society. She supported Korean

orphans and for many years, her and Jay sponsored orphans through the Christian Children's Orphanage. These orphans  became like her own children.

Bessie was also a gifted musician. She played her harmonica and the piano on her 98th birthday in August.

Bessie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jay in 1966, her sister Evelyn Young, and her sister Irene Nadelhoffer. She is survived by a nephew, Darrell Ross Young, a grand nephew, Randy Young and a grand niece, Sharissa Malik and a host of friends.

Bessie donated her body to the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences in Des Moines. Memorial services were held at the Presbyterian Church in Lenox on December 8 at 2:00, conducted by Rev. Don Fisher. Her favorite song "God's Keeping", which

Jay and Bessie sang together as they traveled along, was sung by Gwen Maynes, accompanied by Roberta Lockhart.

Bessie's favorite saying was "I do not know what the future holds, but I do know Who holds the future in His hands and that gives me a feeling of comfort and joy". The influence of her earnest Christian life will remain as a blessing to all who were touched by her life.

Howie, Florence Helen Starry Scanlan -

Funeral services for Florence Helen Howie were held Thursday, Oct. 3,1991 at Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Lenox with Rev. Paul

Grandon officiating. Interment was at Calvary Cemetery, Corning, Iowa.

Florence Helen Howie, daughter of Joseph W. and Mary Neckwinder Starry, was born December 23, 1908 at Williamsburg, Iowa. She passed away September 30, 1991 at Mercy Hospital in Corning.

Florence lived in the rural Prescott area and then moved to Redding and resided there from 1971-1978. Moving again in 1978 to Lenox where she has made her home since. She was a devoted homemaker and friend to all.

Florence married John (Bud) Scanlan October 23, 1940 in Fremont, Neb.; and after his death in 1969, she married Clyde J. Howie on November 23, 1971 in Maryville, Mo. Clyde also preceded her in death in 1976.

Although having no children of her own, she shared her fondest moments with her three step-sons and two stepdaughters, her nieces and nephews.  Other joys in her life was the companionship she received from having coffee with her neighbor ladies. She was also an avid enthusiast of sales and auctions.

Florence was a private person, but one who was always there for you. She was also classified as the family clown and her goal was to keep smiles on everyone. She will be greatly missed.

Kilby, Vera Vesta -

Funeral services for Vera Vesta Kilby were held Monday, Aug. 19, 1991 at the Christian Church in Lenox with Rev. Max Nelson officiating. Interment was at East Fairview Cemetery, Lenox, Iowa.

Vera Vesta Kilby her life journey began on December 24, 1900, on a farm three miles southwest of Lenox, the daughter of William James and Frances Loretta Hockabout Kilby.

She attended grade school at Grove #1 in rural Taylor County and graduated from the Lenox High School. Over a period of several years she graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a degree in elementary education.

Vera was a dedicated teacher for 45 years. She taught in three rural schools in Taylor  County, and in three town schools at Conway, Clearfield, and Lenox.

Vera was a member of the Arrow at UNI, the ISEA, the NEA, the Taylor County Delta Kappa Gamma, the L.F.G. Club and the Mayflower Club.

Vera was baptized at the Blue Grove Church in June of 1915. She later transferred her membership to the Lenox Christian Church Disciples of Christ where she was superintendent of Sunday School from 1942 to 1946. She taught the junior Sunday school class from

1930 to 1980. She was a dedicated member and worker within the church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters Rhoda Mae and Ruth Pearl, and two brothers Leslie James and Glen William.

Those left to cherish her memory include her sister Bernice Kilby and seven nieces and nephews.

McNeese, Dollie B Johnston Glick -

Funeral services for Dollie B. McNeese were held Monday, Nov. 25, 1991 at Novinger-Taylor Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Grandon officiating. Burial was at Grove Cemetery, rural Taylor County, Iowa.

Dollie B. Johnston (Glick) McNeese, the daughter of James Franklin Johnston and Rhada Lee (Mize) Johnston was born at Milton, Okla. on May 16, 1910 and died on November 22, 1991 at Corning, at the age of 81.

Dollie lived in the Ellston and Maloy area most of her adult life. She spent nine years with her daughter, Pauline Anderson in the Vincent, Iowa area, and the last five years of her life in area care centers.

Dollie was united in marriage to Rollie McNeese at Maloy and they lived in the Maloy area for a number of years.

Dollie was blessed with two children, Pauline Ann Glick and George Franklin Glick.

Dollie was engaged in the care of elderly persons who needed care in their homes and also worked at various area care centers.

Dollie was preceded in death by her parents, James and Rhada Johnston, her husband, Rollie McNeese, brothers, Harley Johnston, Giles

Johnston, and Jim Johnston, sister, Alta Johnston Cline, grandchild, Edna Ringberg.

Dollie is survived by her sister, Edna (Johnston) Clark, daughter Pauline (Ringberg) Anderson, son, George Glick, grandchildren Mindy Ringberg, Karl Ringberg, and one other granddaughter.

Dollie was a member of the Ellston United Methodist Church. She loved her garden and especially found joy in flowers. She spent many hours sewing and quilting. She enjoyed cooking and especially baking.

She will be missed by those who knew and loved her.

Moore, Ruth Toland -

Funeral services for Ruth Moore were held Saturday, Nov. 9, 1991 at the United Methodist Church in Lenox, with Rev. Paul Grandon officiating. Burial was at West Fairview Cemetery in Lenox, Iowa.

Ruth Toland Moore passed away November 6, 1991. She was the daughter of Riley and Josephine Toland. Born February 3, 1901 in Littleton, Ill., she came to Iowa when a small child and lived here most of her life.

On December 25, 1919 she was united in marriage to Clark Moore and to this union four children were born: Vivian, Delores, Clark Jr., and Betty. She has eight grandchildren, Steven Strait, Bill Carter, Jr., Sheryl (Moore) Norlin, Michael and Kelly Moore, Sandy (Samo)

Floyd, Bandy and Jeff Samo. There are 16 great grandchildren. She was very happy when the children and grandchildren were home and she will be missed by them all.

Survivors include her husband Clark, three daughters, Vivian Strait (husband Mel) of Lenox, Delores Carter (husband Bill) of Wolfe City,

Texas, Betty Samo (husband Charles) of Ozark, Mo. and one son, Clark Jr. (wife Helen) of Des Moines, eight grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, sisters-in-law Gertrude (Toland) Beatty, Freda Pierce, brothers-in-law, Jack, Raymond, and Vaughn Moore and a number

of nephews, nieces and friends.

Preceding her in death with her parents, seven brothers, two sisters, and two grandchildren.

Perdew, Leonard Charles -

Funeral services for Leonard Charles Perdew was held Thursday, Nov. 7, 1991 at the First Baptist Church in Bedford with Rev. Ted DeHass officiating. Burial was at Washington Cemetery, Gravity, Iowa.

Leonard Charles Perdew, son of Charles and Nettie Zoe Brown Perdew, was born April 24, 1917 in Taylor County, Iowa and entered into rest

November 4, 1991 at St. Joseph Hospital, Omaha, Neb. at the age of 74 years, six months and 10 days.

He was reared in Taylor County, attending Washington Country School and school in Gravity.

On October 28, 1939 Leonard was united in marriage with Marie Evelyn Jackson at the KFNF Radio Station, Shenandoah, Iowa. Six children

were born to bless this union. He farmed all of his life, starting on a farm where Lake Icaria now covers. In 1941 they moved to Nodaway, later moved to Lenox, and in 1954 they settled in Conway where they have lived ever since.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother who died in infancy.

Leonard is survived by his wife Marie Perdew of Conway, Iowa, his children, Otis and his wife Jeanette, Olin Dean and his wife Jan and Zonette M. Beemer and her husband Dale, all of Conway, Iowa, Terry of Creston, Iowa, Dennis and his wife Lurae of Sheridan, Mo.

and Norma Jean Finnell and her husband Walter of Henderson, Iowa, two brothers, Howard and his wife Lola of Bedford, Iowa and Robert and his wife Dorothy Joanne of Gravity, Iowa, 16 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, an aunt, Vera Brown of Bedford, Iowa, several nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Quinn, Edward (Eddie) -

Edward (Eddie) Quinn, a longtime Lenox, Iowa men's clothing store owner, passed away in Sun City West, Arizona November 29, 1991 at the age of 81.  [He was born 10 July 1909]

Mr. Quinn was the son of James Quinn and Catherine Geiger Quinn. After graduating from Lenox High School, he attended A.I.B. business college in Des Moines, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Ethel Crouch January 29, 1933.

In 1937 Mr. Quinn opened his first men's clothing store in Lenox, Iowa. He owned several men's stores in Iowa as well as two in the Sun Cities, Ariz. In 1968 he received an award for being the Brand Name Retailer of the Year. He served several years on the board of the Iowa Retailers Association.

In 1943 Mr. Quinn was called to serve in World War II. He was sent to Europe with the 97th Airborne Division. For 20 hears he wintered in Arizona moving there in 1987. He was a member of the Congregational Church in Spencer, Iowa, a member of the

American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Ethel, two sons, Jay Quinn and wife Barbara of Litchfield Park, Ariz, and Steve Quinn and wife Mary of Mason City, Iowa and five grandchildren.

Memorial services were held December 2 in Sun City, Ariz.

Smith, Everett E -

Funeral services for Everett E. Smith were held at the First Christian Church in Lenox Thursday, Sept. 26, 1991 with Rev. Max Nelson officiating. Interment was at North Fairview Cemetery, Lenox.  Military rites were conducted by Blockton American Legion.

Everett E. Smith, son of Clark D. and Ruby Matheny Smith, was born July 15, 1928 at Platteville, Iowa, He died September 23, 1991 after a lengthy illness with cancer.

Everett grew up in the Blockton and Lenox area and attended the Lenox Schools. He lived in Kansas City, Mo. for several years before returning to Lenox 13 years ago. He worked as an auto body man and mechanic for many years and worked for Barker Motors before retiring in 1989.

Everett married Vina Shawler on June 27, 1953 in Lenox. Five daughters and one son were born to this union. Everett served in the

U.S. Army and was a member of Blockton American Legion Post.

He is survived by his wife Vina of Lenox; daughters Elizabeth and husband Larry Rice of Slater; Karlene Chancy of Gibsonville, N.C.; Karen and husband Kenneth Massey of Hall River, N.C.; Monica Ammons of Diagonal; Amy Smith of Lenox; son Michael of Lenox; three sisters Gladys Newberg of California; Bernice and husband Rex Brown of Blockton; and Ivadene Wilsott of Grandview, Mo.; brothers;

Glenn and Phyllis Smith of Kansas City, Mo.; Harold and Cheryl Smith of Mt. Morris, Ill.; six granddaughters; three grandsons; one step-granddaughter and one step-great grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Francis; and sister Viola Madison.

Tillman, Frank Edward -

Funeral services for Frank Edward Tillman were held Monday, Sept. 16, 1991 at Novinger-Taylor Funeral Home with Rev. Carl Cummings

officiating. Military honors were conducted by Lenox American Legion Post. No. 250.

Frank Edward Tillman, son of Leo Joseph Tillman and Mary Gertrude Holden Tillman was born in Wasco, Calif. June 30, 1921 and departed this life September 12, 1991 at the Veterans Hospital in Omaha, Neb. at the age of 70 years, two months and 12 days.

He grew to maturity in the Wasco, Calif., area where he attended the Parochial School and the St. John's Catholic Church.

On March 3, 1946 he was united in marriage to Helen Jeanne Grimm at Bakersfield, Calif., where they resided for 15 years then they lived in Rodeo in the Bay area for about 15 years before moving to Sharpsburg, Iowa in 1976 where they have continued to reside.

To this union three children were born: Veronica, James and April.

He was employed as a construction superintendent and involved in the carpentry trade all of his life. He was an avid sportsman; fishing, hunting and diving for abalone in his younger days. He loved to garden and watch things grow. During his school years he was

a member of the Future Farmers of America. In his yearly years before he entered the Navy, he was a cowboy on a working cattle ranch in California. He served as an Aviator Machinist in the Navy from 1942 until 1945.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father and a brother Alex.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Jeanne of the home; the children, Veronica (Vicki) Annette and her husband Larry Hernandez, James and his wife Linda Tillman and April Dianne and her husband Jay Mains; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren;

brothers and sisters, Loretta Roskams, Bishop, Calif.; Catherine Adams, Ft. Worth, Texas; Ted Tillman, Bakersfield, Calif.; John Tillman, Concord, Calif., and families; other relatives and friends.

He was a member of the American Legion, Retired Carpenters Club and a former member of the Eagles.

Frank was always willing and ready to help friends and neighbors at any time and he will be remembered as a kind husband and father who will be sadly missed by his loved ones. [Burial in Washington Cemtery/Gravity]
