Barker, Kenneth Forest -

Kenneth Forest Barker, the son of William B and Mary Etta Mason Barker, was born October 21, 1906 in rural Adams

County, Iowa.  He died at his home in Lenox, Iowa on Friday October 7, 1983  at the age of seventy-four years, eleven

months and 14 days.

Ken spent his early childhood in Montana and then returned to the Corning, Iowa area.  He was united in marriage with Doris Mae Crowell of rural Gravity on May 21, 1920.  They resided in Adams and Taylor counties during the early days of their

marriage and were engaged in farming until Mr Barker founded an implement business in Lenox in 1936.

Ken was a devoted family man who gave much consideration to the life and well being of each family member.  He had a great interest in soil conservation practices and soil preservation for future generations.  His friends, neighbors and business associates

meant a great deal to him.

Ken was a member of the Lenox United Methodist Church.

Preceding him in death were his parents, two sisters, Helen M and Evelyn Barker Leet and two brothers, Jim and Donald.

Survivors include his wife, Doris of Lenox, his five children, Elene Herren and husband Duane of Red Oak, Justine Mendenhall and

husband, Elvis of Prescott, Arizona, Kevin and wife Millie, Lonnie and wife Billie Jean, all of Lenox and Bill and wife Becky of

Creston, twenty grandchildren, twelve greatgrandchildren, a sister Lois Bickford and her husband, Kenneth of Littleton,

Colorado as well as other relations.

Services were held Monday October 10 at 2 p.m. at the Lenox United Methodist Church with Reverend Lester Hesseltine, pastor and Reverend John McKinstry, officiating.

Music was by Norma Paymal, organist, and Marilyn Beck and Diana Maharry, vocalists.  The selections were "How Great Thou Art" and

"In The Garden".

Casket bearers were Mr Barker's grandsons, Steven Barker, Todd Barker, Brent Heeren, Jeff Mendenhall, Lance Heeren,

Scott Heeren and Jed Mendenhall.

Interment was in the North Fairview Cemetery at Lenox. 

Goodson-Lindsay Funeral Home of Corning was in charge of arrangements.

Calvin, Hudson Arthur -

Hudson Arthur Calvin, the son of Arthur and Laura Lowe Calvin, was born near Chadwick, Missouri, Christian county,

on April 23, 1917. He died at his home in Lenox, Iowa on Sunday, July 3, 1983, at the age of sixty-six years, two months

and ten days.

"Hud" moved to Iowa as a young man and went into the trucking business. He became a member of the Stringtown

Church, residing in the Stringtown community and later moving to Lenox.

Mr. Calvin served his country in the Pacific Theatre as a member of the United States Army during World War II.

Following his return home, he resumed his trucking career. "Hud" traveled many thousands of miles in his forty-nine

years on the road.

He was united in marriage with Laura Elizabeth Lowrv in Maryville. Missouri on September 29, 1940. Their marriage

was blessed with a daughter, Judith Anne. An infant nephew. Phillip Lowry, joined their family in 1957.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth, and nephew, Phillip of Lenox; his daughter, Judy Brand and husband, Larry of

Jacksonville, Arkansas; two granddaughters, Mindy and Lori Brand; four brothers, Willard, Paul and James, all of

Lenox, and Jack of Des Moines; three sisters, Helen Case, Opal Heikkinen, both of Lenox, and Juanita Clark of Creston;

as well as other relatives.

Services were Wednesday, July 6 at the Larkin-Bender Funeral Home in Lenox. Pastor Don Jensen officiated.

Music was by Norma Paymal, organist. The special selection was "How Great Thou Art".

Casket bearers were Wayne Dale Moore, Francis McMillin, Glen Mullin, Douglas Boyer, Duane Sturm, and Bill Beadel.

Military services were conducted by Parkinson Post #250, Lenox American Legion.

Interment was in the North Fairview Cemetery at Lenox.

Daggett, Mildred Anna Rundlett -

Mildred Anna Daggett, the daughter of Horace and Nellie Gutch Rundlett, was born July 27, 1908 near Kent, Iowa. She

died Sunday, August 21, 1983 at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines at the age of seventy-five years and

twenty-five days.

Mildred received her education and graduated from the Cromwell school.

She was united in marriage with Donald Daggett of Prescott, Iowa on December 24, 1929. They resided their entire

married lives on the Daggett farm south of Prescott.

Following her marriage, Mildred joined the Prescott Christian Church where she maintained an active membership

until her death. She was also interested in community activities and supported her son Max's interest in the Farm

Bureau and the American Legion.

Mildred enjoyed going to the Congregate Meal Site each week to visit with friends. Reading and conducting research

on the Rundlett and Daggett family geneologies, as well as keeping up with her children and their many activities

were her hobbies.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Don; four sisters; one brother; two grandchildren; and one

greatgrandchild.

Survivors include her three sons. Horace and wife, Ruth of Lenox. Iowa, Brad and wife, Janette of Sewickley, Pennsylvania,

and Max of Prescott; five grandchildren; six greatgrandchildren; a brother, Frank Rundlett of Three Forks,

Montana; a sister-in-law, Mattie Daggett of Prescott; as well as other relatives.

Services were held Wednesday, August 24 at 10:30 a.m. at the Prescott United Church. Reverend Jeanne Groom, pastor,

officiated.

Music was by Clarice Outhier, organist, and Helen Richie, vocalist. The selections were "In the Garden" and "How

Great Thou Art".

Flower bearers were Betty Pettit and Ellen Grace Brown.

Casket bearers were Glen Laird, Lavern McCarty, Gary Botkin, Michael Pettit, Doug Brandt, and Stanley Smisek.

Interment was in the Evergreen Cemetery at Prescott.

Davis, Nelle Lewis -

Nelle Lewis Davis, the daughter of Seaman Wallace and Sarah Carlton Lewis, was born September 29, 1904 at

Humeston, Iowa. She died at the Rosary Hospital in Corning, Iowa on Friday, October 21, 1983 at the age of seventy-nine

years and twenty-two days.

Her early life was spent in the Humeston community where she grew to womanhood and attended school. Following her

graduation from Humeston High School, she attended Iowa State College at Ames. She then taught school in Leroy,

Iowa, later moving to Lenox where she was the fourth grade teacher for eight years.

On August 17, 1934, she was united in marriage with Paul Davis at Humeston. The couple made their home in Lenox and

have resided at the same address since that time.

Nelle was an active member of the Lenox United Presbyterian Church and also of many civic clubs and organizations.

She enjoyed many activities and her love of flowers was always evident in the landscaping of her home.

Preceding her in death were her parents and a brother, Walter C. Lewis.

Survivors include her husband, Paul Davis of Lenox; a sister-in-law, Margaret Nelson of Lenox; two nephews, Bill

Lewis and wife, Joan of Redding. California, and Carlton Lewis and wife, Jean of Monmouth, Illinois; as well as

many friends.

Graveside services were held Wednesday, October 26 at 10 a.m. at the West Fairview Cemetery at Lenox. Reverend

Don Fisher, pastor of the United Presbyterian Church, officiated.

A memorial has been established to the United Presbyterian Church in Lenox.

Dougherty, John Clarence -

John Clarence Dougherty, the son of John and Susan Hughes Dougherty, was born west of Benson, Nebraska March 29,

1906. He died at the Immanuel Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska Thursday, September 29, 1983 at the age of seventy-seven

years and six months.

John grew to manhood in the Benson area. He was united in marriage with Mildred Anna Chambers December 28, 1927 at

Omaha.

Mr. Dougherty was an energetic person and lived and worked, farming through the depression. He was later able to

buy his own farm near Tekamah, Nebraska where he lived until moving to Lenox, Iowa seven years ago.

He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Although he had been confined to a

wheelchair for five years, he was always happy to have relatives stop to visit. He will be missed by those who knew him.

Preceding him in death were his parents; a sister, Helen Bucker; and a brother, James Dougherty.

Survivors include his wife Mildred of Lenox; three sons, Duane and wife, Rosemary, Richard and wife, Annette, all of

Lenox, and Glen of Austin, Texas; thirteen grandchildren; eight greatgrandchildren; as well as other relatives.

Services were held Monday, October 3 at 1:30 p.m. at the Larkin-Bender Funeral Home in Lenox. Reverend Les Hesseltine,

pastor of the United Methodist Church, officiated.

Music was provided by Norma Paymal, organist, and Marilyn Rychnovsky, vocalist. The selections were "How Great Thou Art"

and "The Lord's Prayer".

Casket bearers were Duane Dougherty, Mark Dougherty, John Dougherty, Wade Dougherty, Kevin Wickey, Marty

Dolphins, and Brent Schrader.

Interment was in the North Fairview Cemetery at Lenox.

Grother, Laura Herzberg -

Laura Grother, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Herzberg, was born March 6, 1896 in Page County, Iowa. She died at the

Lenox Cure Center in Lenox, Iowa on Wednesday, November 9, 1983 at eighty-seven years of age. She had been a resident of

the Care Center for two years.

Laura was united in marriage with Otto Grother on July 8, 1915.  They spent most of their lives near Yorktown, Iowa. He

preceded her in death May 5, 1978.

Survivors include a daughter, Luella Windhorst of Lenox; a son, Leroy Grother of Hemet, California; five grandchildren;

and five greatgrandchildren.

Services were held Saturday, November 12 at 1:30 p.m. at St Paul's Lutheran Church in Yorktown. The Reverends

Stephen Kamprath and Kenneth Theile officiated. Family night was held from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, November 11 at

the Walker-Merrick Funeral Home in Clarinda.

Interment was in the Summit Cemetery near Yorktown.

Holben, Eugene -

Eugene Holben, 59. of Lenox, died at Rosary Hospital in Corning on Monday morning, September 5. following a

lengthy illness.

Holben had served Taylor County as Deputy Sheriff for the past eight years, beginning his duties in 1975. He was a

lifelong Lenox resident, serving the community in many capacities.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 8 at 1:30 p.m. at the Lenox United Methodist Church. Reverend

Lester Hesseltine will officiate. Interment will be in the North Fairview Cemetery in Lenox.

Memorials have been established to the United Methodist Church and the American Cancer Society.

The family will meet friends during visitation at the Larkin-Bender Funeral Home in Lenox on Wednesday, September 7

from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Survivors include Holben's wife, Betty, their three children, David of Des Moines; Mrs. Don (Janet Sue) Black of Council

Bluffs; and Jeannie of Lenox, and six grandchildren.

Gene was a member of the Lenox United Methodist Church, Lenox Rotary Club and Masonic Lodge. He was a member of

the Lenox Volunteer Fire Department for thirty-one years.

In 1961, Gene became a special officer for the Lenox Police Department. He also served on the security force at

the Iowa Stale Fair with the Department of Public Safety. He joined the Taylor County Sheriff's Posse while working

for the U.S. Postal Service in Lenox, then resigned his postal duties to become Taylor County Deputy Sheriff, a position he

continued to maintain until his death.

Holben, Eugene Clayton -

Eugene Clayton Holben, the only child of Herman and Elsie Clayton Holben, was born on June 15, 1924 at Lenox, Iowa.

He died at Rosary Hospital in Corning on September 5, 1983 at the age of 59 years, two months, and 20 days.

"Gene" grew to manhood in the Lenox community and began helping his parents operate the Lenox Theater by selling

popcorn when he was five years old. He continued to operate the theater until 1977.

During World War II he served his country in the Army and returned to Lenox following his discharge from the service.

On May 17, 1947, he was united in marriage to Betty Reynolds at the Methodist Church in Lenox. Enriching their lives

were three children, David, Janet and Jeanne.

In addition to operating the theater, Gene worked at the Lenox Post Office for 34 years until his resignation to accept

the post of Taylor County Deputy Sheriff in 1975.

He was a member of the Lenox United Methodist Church, Parkinson Post #250 of the American Legion in Lenox,

and the Theodore J. Martens Post of the V.F.W. in Creston. Gene was a member of the Lenox Volunteer Fire Department

for 31 years. He was also a member of the Lenox Rotary Club, Tremont Lodge #343 A.F.&A.M., as well as serving

his community in many other civic duties.

Since becoming Taylor County Deputy Sheriff, law enforcement was his major interest, and he was proud of his

membership in the Iowa State Sheriff and Deputy's Association.

Survivors include his wife, Betty of Lenox; his son, David and wife, Janet of Des Moines; his daughters, Janet Black and

husband, Don of Council Bluffs and Jeanne Holben of Lenox. Also surviving are six grandchildren, of whom he was

extremely proud, Tom, Jeni, Joni, and Jeremy Holben and Shannon and Jordon Black.

Services were held Thursday, September 8 at the United Methodist Church in Lenox at 1:30 p.m. Reverend Lester

Hesseltine, pastor, officiated.

Music was by Norma Paymal, organist, who played a special selection entitled, "Gentle Shepherd".

Casket bearers were Clifford Hanshaw, Forrest Hanshaw, Leonard Bartles, Howard Clark, David Dudley, David Moore,

and Kenneth Black.

Honorary casket bearers were Allie Hegwood, James Calvin, George Reynolds, George Grey and Eugene Miller.

Sixty-eight law enforcement officials including Sheriffs, Deputies, B.C.I, agents, highway patrolmen, and reserve

officers attended the services. The officers were from Taylor, Adams, Page, Montgomery, Ringgold and Polk counties.

B.C.I, agents from Council Bluffs and Sioux City were also in attendance. All officers were part of a special honor escort.

Interment was in the North Fairview Cemetery in Lenox.

Larkin-Bender Funeral Home of Lenox was in charge of arrangements.

Houchin, Russel Edward -

Russel Houchin, former owner and operator of the Lone Star Conoco Station at the Junction of Highways 25 & 34, died

suddenly at his home in Midway City, California on Monday, October 24.

Survivors include, his wife, Edith; a son, B. Edward of Montana: two brothers, Frank of Long Beach, California and

Ernest of Petaluma, California; five sisters, Jane Daggett of Mounds, Oklahoma, Dora Reichardt of Midway City, California,

Rena Webb of Bedford, Helen Travis of Corning, and Agnes Porter of Lenox.

Mrs. Houchin is the former Edith Foster of Clearfield.

Houchin, Russell Edward -

Russel Edward Houchln, the son of James W. and Mary Ellen Ellis Houchin, was born on a farm near Yorktown in Page

County, Iowa April 8, 1898. He died unexpectedly at his home in Midway City, California on Monday, October 24, 1983 at the

age of eighty-five years, six months and sixteen days.

He lived in Taylor, Montgomery and Adams counties during his youth. On December 17, 1930, he was united in marriage

at Creston, Iowa with Edith Foster of Clearfield. They celebrated their Golden Anniversary in 1980.

Russel and Edith built the Lone Star Conoco Oil Station at the intersection of Highways 34 and 25 in 1933. They made their

home at the same location.

Russel joined Canby Lodge No. 354 AF&AM at Cromwell,s Iowa during this time. The family moved to California in 1951 due to health

problems. He was employed as a union house painter until his retirement.

Russel loved to carve wood, spending countless hours creating gifts. Even though he was encouraged to sell his creations,

his reply was always, "No, I give them away." Handmade toy furniture and other items were his gifts to childrens'

homes in southern California. Many relatives and friends also enjoy the creative gifts given to them.

Preceding him in death were his parents; three sisters, Mary, Flossie and Hester Day; and a brother, Samuel Ellis.

Survivors include his wife, Edith: a son, Billie Edward of Harlem, Montana; a granddaughter, Trudy Clinton and

two greatgrandsons of Penn Valley, California: two brothers, Ernest of Petaluma, California; and Frank of Long Beach,

California; and five sisters. Jane Doggett of Mounds, Oklahoma, Dora Reichardt of Midway City, California, Rena Webb of

Bedford, Iowa, Helen Travis of Corning, Iowa, and Agnes Porter of Lenox. Iowa.

Masonic graveside services were conducted on Saturday, October 29 by his nephew, Ernest Reichardt, Master of the

Yucca Valley, California Masonic Lodge. Interment was in Westminster, California.

James, Merlin Weetman -

Merlin Weetman James, the son of F.H. "Bert" and Alsie Weetman James, was born April 16, 1908 on the family

farm located in Adams county, Iowa. He died Wednesday, September 21, 1983 at the Greater Community Hospital in

Creston, Iowa at the age of seventy-five years, five months and five days.

Merlin grew to manhood in Adams county. He was united in marriage with Florence Bissell on August 18, 1929 in rural Cass

county, Iowa.

He was a farmer all his life, priding himself on his cattle and hog herds and loved to "watch the corn grow."

Merlin was "Dad and Grandpa" to many, and a devoted family man who greatly enjoyed family gatherings. He was

always ready to listen to triumphs as well as problems. His wit always managed to shine and bring a smile no matter how

low a person felt.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, an honorary member of the Saddle Club, the Adams County Farm

Bureau, Adams County Cattlemen's Association, and the Adams County Pork Producers. He was a 4-H club leader for

twenty years, and also served on the Corning School Board.

Preceding him in death were his parents; an infant brother; a young son, Otho; a grandson, Dale; and a sister-in-law,

Velma.

Survivors include his wife of fifty-four years. Florence; his sons and daughters-in-law, Ivan and Margaret, Gary and Barb,

all of Corning, Iowa, Virgil and Janice of Cumberland, Iowa, Roger and Donna of Lenox, Iowa, and Fred and Kay of St.

Paul Park, Minnesota; his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Mike England of Corning; twenty grandchildren; nineteen

greatgrandchildren; a brother, Earl James and wife, Floy of Corning; special friends, Glenn and Ava Van Houten; as well as

other relatives.

Services were held at the Corning United Methodist Church on Saturday, September 24 at 10:30 a.m. Reverend Steve

Williams officiated.

Music was provided by Kathy Schafer, organist, and Eugene Chapell, vocalist.

Casket bearers were Glen Scott, Jack McKee, Lewis Bissell, Don Schrader, Rex Bissell, and Dennis Bissell.

Honorary bearers were Melvin Parrott, Howard Cooley, Loyl Norcross, Orlo Olive, Kenneth Murdock, Glenn Van

Houten, and Clarence Russell.

Interment was in the Forrest Hill Cemetery at Mt. Etna, Iowa.

Jennings, Irene W Miller -

Irene W Jennings, age 71, of Wrightwood, California, died Thursday June 30, 1983.  She was born March 1, 1912 in

Decatur, Iowa to William and Dora Caldwell Miller.

Mrs Jennlngs was a homemaker.

She moved to California in 1940.

Survivors include her husband, Leroy B. Jennings of California, two sons, LeRoy Miller Jennings of the home, and John Jennings of Centralia, Washington,  a daughter, Bette Ann Collburn of Benton City, Washington, two brothers, Vernon Miller of Shenandoah,

Iowa and Clair Miller of Madrid, Iowa, three sisters, Ruth Piercy of Corning, Iowa, Merle Holland of Creston, Iowa and Esther

King of Herman, Nebraska; seventeen grandchildren and one greatgrandchild.

Preceding her in death were four brothers, Roy, Virgil, Francis, and Faye Miller.

Graveside services were held Saturday, July 2 at 4 p.m. in the Oakhill Cemetery at Corning.

A memorial, has been established to the American Cancer Society.

Long, William Rayfield -

William Rayfield Long, the son of John George and Henrietta Linden Long, was born at Clayton, Kansas May 10, 1911. He died at the Rosary Hospital in Corning, Iowa on Saturday, September 17, 1983 at the age of seventy-two years, four months and seven days.

Ray spent his childhood in Clayton. He was united in marriage with Charlotta Alice Gray of Lenora, Kansas on August 10, 1931.

The family left Kansas in 1935, first moving to Arkansas, and then to near Shenandoah, Iowa in 1937. They moved to

Sharpsburg, Iowa in 1945 where they made their home until moving to Lenox in October of 1967.

Ray will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, one who always found the time to help

others in any way he could.

Preceding him in death were his parents, three sisters, Viola Cleveland, Luella Wycoff and Dorothy Papst; and a brother,

Edward Long.

Survivors include his wife, Alice of Lenox; his six children, Leonard William Long of Lenox, Iowa; Zelma Mae Cochran and husband, Walter of Evergreen, Colorado; Raymond Earl Long and wife, Lee of Lincoln, Nebraska; Richard Lee Long and wife, Christena;

Ira George Long and wife, Irene, all of Sharpsburg; and Shirley Kay Earley and husband, Francis of Lenox; nineteen grandchildren,

seven greatgrandchildren, a sister, Deloris Withington of Roseburg, Oregon; four brothers, Leon Long, Virgil Long, Bernard Long, all of Roseburg, and Sylvester Long of Las Vegas, Nevada; as well as other relatives.

Services were held Wednesday, September 21 at 1:30 p.m. at the Larkin-Bender Funeral Home in Lenox. Reverend Don

Fisher, pastor of the Lenox United Presbyterian Church officiated.

Music was furnished by Norma Paymal, organist, and Marilyn Beck and Billie Jean Barker, vocalists. The selections

were "Rock of Ages" and "Beyond the Sunset".

Casket bearers were Roy Beck, Duane Beck, Leonard Knott, Bill Barrans, Dean Posten, and Bernard Plowman.

Interment was in the North Fairview Cemetery at Lenox.

Maharry, Nellie Catherine Jones Bryant -

Nellie Catherine Maharry, the daughter of John A. and Catherine Cummings Jones, was born March 23, 1895 on the

home place north of Lenox, Iowa in Adams County. She died at the Lenox Care Center on Friday, September 23, 1983 at

the age of eighty eight years and six months.

Nellie was baptized as an infant at the United Presbyterian Church in Lenox by Reverend Murch. She was united with

the church at the age of eleven and had been an active member since that time.

She graduated from Lenox High School with the Class of 1913.

On March 1, 1916, Nellie was united in marriage with Clarence Bryant in Lenox. Their marriage was blessed with the

birth of two children, Lolita Louise and Robert. Clarence preceded Nellie in death on December 1, 1925 as did Lolita

Louise in infancy.

Most of Nellie's life was spent in the Lenox community, except for seven years when she was employed by the J.C. Penney

Company in Creston.

In addition to her church activities, Nellie was active in many clubs and was a fifty year member of the Order of the

Eastern Star, having served as Worthy Matron in 1936.

She was united in marriage with Cecil Maharry on May 14, 1962.

Others preceding her in death were her parents, a brother, Ed Jones; and three sisters, Mae Brokaw, Bertha McFee and

Merle Borland.

Survivors include her husband, Cecil of Lenox; her son, Robert Bryant and wife, Lucille of West Des Moines; three

step-sons, Gerald Maharry and wife, Hazel of Clearfield, Leland Maharry of Hudson, North Carolina and Dr. Jim Maharry

and wife, Rita of Whittier, California; a granddaughter, Kathy Gilbert and husband, Ivan and their children, Jeffrey

and Jennifer; eleven step grandchildren, fourteen step greatgrandchildren, and a brother-in-law, Charlie Brokaw of

Lenox.

Services were held Monday, September 26 at 10:30 a.m. at the Lenox United Presbyterian Church. Reverend Don Fisher,

pastor, officiated.

Music was by Roberta Lockhart, organist, and Gwen Maynes, soloist. The selections were "In The Garden" and

"Amazing Grace". The congregational hymns led by Jon Brokaw were, "Blessed Assurance" and "Oh, Master,

Let Me Walk With Thee".

Casket bearers were Wayne McFee, Kenneth McFee, John Borland, Kirk Maharry, Bob Cain, and Paul Brokaw.

Interment was in the East Fairview Cemetery at Lenox.

Maloy, Irene Wilkinson -

Irene Wilkinson, daughter of Fred and Carrie Wilkinson, was born August 17, 1891 on a farm south of Mount Ayr.  She

entered the Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr on Sunday, October 9 and passed away on Monday, October 17,

1983, at the age of ninety-two years.

She attended school in Mount Ayr and West High in Des Moines, before graduating from Mount Ayr High School in 1910.

She attended Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, where she majored in public school music.

On November 18, 1912, she was united in marriage to F.B. Maloy of Redding, Iowa. The couple celebrated their 70th

wedding anniversary in 1982 and were blessed with nearly one year together after that. They made their home on a

farm in the Redding vicinity for a number of years before moving to the town of Redding. In 1940, they moved to their

present home in Mount Ayr.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her step-mother, Alice Wilkinson; her brother, Roy Wilkinson; and a sister,

Ethel Toombs; two sons, first-born, Jack Baird, who died in infancy, and Flavel Baird Maloy, Jr. (Bill) who was a

casualty of World War II, while serving on a submarine in the south Pacific. She also was preceded in death by a son-in-law

Ed Carr, and a step-granddaughter, Jeanne Bush.

In addition to her husband and her daughter, Marian Hughes of Lenox, she is also survived by her son-in-law,

James Hughes; three grandsons, Patrick Carr and wife, Sue, of Spencer, Iowa; Michael Carr of Minneapolis, Minnesota;

and Joseph Carr of Fort Madison, Iowa; two greatgrandsons, Edward and David Carr of Spencer; sister-in-law, Mrs.

Bernice Lynch of Redding; five nieces including Mrs. Esse (Kathleen) Freed and Mrs. H.M. (Barbara) Seiffert of

Redding, Iowa; two nephews; three step-granddaughters, Mary Walter of Lenox, Peggy Tripp of Kent and Kathy

Azinger of Fort Madison; and thirteen step-greatgrandchildren.

Her great capacity to love was shared with her husband of so many years; her immediate family and the family she

acquired by marriage. Through these relationships, which she treasured, she made the term "homemaker" creative.

In her lifelong affiliation with the Redding Methodist Church, she was willing to minister, particularly by sharing her

musical talent and served as the church pianist for twenty-five years. She also taught private piano lessons for many years.

Mrs. Maloy was a thirty-eight year member of Chapter CK, P.E.O. Sisterhood of Mt. Ayr and an inspiration to other

members as she attended meetings as recently as this past year. It is in these circles and other facets of community life

that her loss will be most deeply felt.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 19 at the Mount Ayr United Methodist Church conducted by

Pastor Milt Henderson. Music was by Mike Greene and Mrs. Rolfe Taylor.

Casketbearers were Craig Elliott, Steve Mitchell, Bernard Crawford, Bill Rusk, Sam Newton and Earl Schardein.

Burial was in Mount Ayr Rose Hill Cemetery.

Miller, Helen Gail Herman -

Helen Gall Miller, 67, of Lenox died Monday, October 24 at the Rosary Hospital in Corning. She was born December 20, 1915

at Glidden, Iowa, and was a resident of Bagley, Iowa prior to moving to Lenox.

Helen Gail was the daughter of Henry and Etta Herman. She was married to Ralph Miller who preceded her in death

October 24, 1976.

Survivors include a son, Jerry Herman of Lenox; and two brothers, John M. Herman of Minneapolis, Minnesota and

Joe Herman of Glidden, Iowa.

Funeral arrangements were made by the Larkin-Bender Funeral Home in Lenox.

Following cremation, the remains are to be interred in the Richalind Township Cemetery in Bagley, Iowa.

Reynolds, Effie Elizabeth Cowan Curphey -

Effie Elizabeth Cowan was born near Miami, Missouri July 5, 1887 to William Everett and Mary Ellen (Ella) Cowan. She

died at Sharpsburg, Iowa on Monday, September 5, 1983 at the age of ninety-six years and two months.

Effie moved with her family to Lenox, Iowa in 1900. She attended summer school and then taught school.

She was united in marriage with Ross E. Curphey on December 16, 1914. He preceded her in death.

Effie was a member of the United Presbyterian Church and also taught Sunday School until her marriage, transferring her

membership to the Methodist Church in February of 1915. She was a Sunday School teacher for many years, financial secretary

for twenty-five years, a member of the Priscilla Circle, and later the W.S.C.S. Effie had been a faithful member of the H.R.C.

since 1933.

On August 4, 1957, she was united in marriage with Claude Reynolds. She will be remembered as a devoted mother and grandmother.

Preceding her in death besides her first husband were her parents, a sister, Mrs. Jessie Thompson: a brother, Everett Cowan; and her husband, Claude Reynolds.

Survivors include two sons, Thurman L. Curphey and Kenneth M. Curphey, both of Sharpsburg; a step-daughter,

Nina Young and a step-son, George Reynolds, both of Lenox; seventeen grandchildren, and thirty-one greatgrandchildren.

Services were held Friday, September 9 at the Lenox United Methodist Church at 1:30 p.m. Reverend Lester Hesseltine, pastor, officiated.

Music was by Norma Paymal, organist, and Chris Long and Linda Spring, vocalists. The selections were "Be Not Afraid" and "In The Garden".

Casket bearers were Ivan Holmes, Joe Brammer, Leonard Knott, Dean Breach, George Dunbar, and George Nelson.

Interment was in the West Fairview Cemetery at Lenox.
