Anderson, Wilbert (Andy) -

Services for Wilbert (Andy) Anderson, 62, were held February 19 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home with Rev. Cart Cummings officiating.

Interment was at Washington Cemetery in Gravity, Ia. Mr. Anderson died February 16, 1987 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des

Moines.

Wilbert (Andy) Anderson, son of Mannie A. Anderson and Mary Etta Anderson was born at Kansas City, Mo. August 17, 1924. He grew to maturity in Kansas City, Mo. where he attended both grade and high school and he belonged to the Salvation Army and the Methodist Church.

On July 18, 1945 he was united in marriage to June Grimm at Olathe, Ks. and they lived in Kansas City moving to Topeka, Ks. in 1952 and

returning to Kansas City in 1953. In 1957 they moved to El Paso, Texas and lived until 1964 when Andy retired from the United States Army and they moved to Sharpsburg, Iowa on December 1, 1964 where they have continued to reside.

To this union one daughter, Linda Gayle was born in 1947.

Andy was employed at NSK Corp. in Clarinda, Iowa until ill health caused him to retire in June 1982.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Shirley and Ruth.

Lift to cherish his memory are his wife, June of the home; daughter, Linda and her husband Evert Larkin of Fredonia, Ks.; sisters; Frances Cunningham of Des Moines, Ia.; and Vanetta and her husband Carlos Cochran of Des Moines, Ia.; brothers Marvin and his wife Joanne of Lenexa, Ks.; Carl and his wife Wanda of Kansas City, Ks.; and Leonard and his wife Joanne of Kansas City, Mo.; four grandchildren, Sharon, Debbie, Phillip and Kristine and husband Charles Rogers of Fredonia, Ks.; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Andy entered the U.S. Army in February 1943 and served in the European Theatre with Patten's troups from 1944 to July 1945; he

served in the Korean conflict July 1950 until July 1951. and retired from the U.S. Army in December 1964. He was a member of the American Legion Post #250 in Lenox, Ia.

Andy was a kind and considerate and loving husband, father and grandfather, friend and neighbor and he will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Bivens, Helen M Neiderheiser -

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Dec. 27 at the Lenox United Presbyterian Church for Helen M. Bivens, 92. The Rev. Elmer West

officiated at the services for Mrs. Bivens, who died Dec. 23 at Mercy Hospital in Corning. Burial was in East Fairview Cemetery, Lenox,

Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in charge.

Mrs. Bivens was born April 7, 1894, in Jefferson, daughter of Frank and Anna Beaty Neiderheiser. She moved to Lenox with her family in 1899, and had resided in the area most of her life. From 1942 until 1956, she made her home in Omaha, returning to Lenox in 1956.

She and Charles H. Bivens were married March 28, 1919, in Des Moines, He died June 4, 1965.

Mrs. Bivens was a homemaker and a member of the United Presbyterian Church.

She leaves two daughters, Dorothy Dukes of Lenox and Mildred McGraw of Meadowbridge, W. Va.; a sister, Ruth Marks of Windom,

Minn.; 11 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three sons, Charles and two infants; two brothers and three grandchildren.

Brokaw, Charles Walter -

Funeral services were held at the Lenox United Methodist Church at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 23 for Charles Walter Brokaw, 88. Mr. Brokaw died Feb. 19 at Lenox Care Center.

The Rev. Paul Grandon officiated and burial was in East Fairview Cemetery, Lenox, Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in charge.

Pallbearers were Mr. Brokaw's five surviving sons, Glenn, Harold, Frank, Charles A. and Paul Brokaw, and a grandson, Martin Brokaw.

Honorary pallbearers were Wayne McFee, Kenneth McFee, Robert Bryant, Bob Cain, John T. Borland, Stan Brokaw, Donald Brokaw and Art Mohler.

Mr. Brokaw was born Nov. 22, 1898, near Mercer Center, son of Frank A. and Eva Walter Brokaw. He was educated in the rural schools

of Adams County, and became a farmer at an early age. He farmed as long as his health permitted, at which time his eldest son, Walter,

took over the operation.

On June 24, 1920, he and Mae Jones were married at her farm home northwest of Lenox. They resided for four years on a farm near

Mercer Center, moving to a farm northwest of Lenox where they resided 12 years. In 1936, they purchased a farm north of Lenox,

where he resided until January, 1981, when he entered the care center.

Mr. Brokaw transferred his membership from the Mercer Center Methodist Church to the Lenox Methodist Church in 1936. He

worked long and strenuous hours to provide for his wife and 10 children, and regardless of weather conditions, made every effort to see that the family attended church and Sunday school regularly, and had good attendance at the public schools.

Mr. Brokaw was a member of the Lenox Independent School District board from 1940 until 1951.

He was a dealer for Funk's Seed Corn for many years.

He is survived by five sons, Glenn and Paul of Lenox, Harold of Des Moines, Frank of South Bend, Ind., and Charles A. of Decatur, Ill.;

three daughters, Mrs. Dean (Lucille) Roe of Stuart, Mrs. Alvin (Lois) Brown of Lenox, and Mrs. Richard (Catherine) Gavend of Denver, Colo.; a brother, Leland of Mercer Center; 30 grandchildren; 46 great grandchildren and 19 grandchildren-in-law, a total of 111 living descendants.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mae, in 1972; an infant son, Charles Jr. in 1921; a son, Walter, in 1984; his parents; a brother,

Frederick, in 1923; a great grandson, Jeremy Maharry in 1973, and a great granddaughter, Jasmin Evans in 1979.

Davison, Harvey E -

Funeral services for Harvey E Davison, 88, were held at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 29 at Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Lenox. The Rev. Elmer West

officiated and burial was in Lexington Cemetery in Taylor County.

A retired farmer, Mr. Davison died Dec. 26 in Bedford.

He was born Feb. 5, 1898, in Hopkins, Mo., a son of Robert and Belle Laskey Davison.

He and Sarah B. Tall were married April 27, 1921, in Maryville, Mo.

They farmed in Missouri and later near Prescott, moving to Lenox in 1979. Mrs. Davison died in 1983.

Mr. Davison was a member of the First Christian Church in Lenox.

He leaves four sons, Herman of Modesto, Calif., Harley of Vanduser, Mo., Donald of Monroeville, Pa., and Jerry of Penis, Calif.; two daughters, Leota Pfeiffer of Yuma, Ariz., and Karen Gustad of Jeffers, Minn.; two brothers, Harlan of Hopkins and Archie of Bedford; a sister, Lula Carmichael of Hopkins; 28 grandchildren and 40 great grandchildren.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Sumerhays, two sisters, a brother and two grand-

children.

Houchin, James Ernest -

Mrs. Harley Porter received word of the recent death of her eldest brother, James Ernest Houchin of Petaluma, Calif. Mr. Houchin,

96, had been confined to a nursing home for many years. He died Dec 24.

Key, Kenneth Wesley -

Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 29, 1:80 p.m., at Larkin Funeral Home in Creston for Kenneth Wesley Key, 69. Mr. Key

died at Veterans Hospital in Des Moines, Dec. 26, after a long illness.

The Rev. Bob Pickerell of Creston First Christian Church officiated and burial was in West Fairview Cemetery, Lenox.

Pallbearers were Clyde and Rob Belding, Rich Michaelis, Mike Short, Matt Somers and Jerry Dale.

Mr. Key was born March 8, 1917, on a farm near Lenox, son of Frank and Lillian Hyatt Key.

He and Josephine Hood were married Nov. 26, 1940, at Osceola.

Following his discharge from the Navy after World War II, Mr. Key was employed by the CB&Q Railroad in Creston. In 1946 the family moved to Red Oak, where they resided until returning to Creston in 1968.

Mr. Key retired in 1971 due to failing health. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Red Oak, Post #1797 of the Veterans of

Foreign Wars, the Eagles and Elks lodges and the American Legion, all Creston organizations.

Mr. Key always extended a helping hand to friends, family and neighbors, and was always there when needed.

He leaves his wife, Josephine, of the home in Creston; four sons, James of Oskaloosa, Herman of Creston, Gary of Knoxville and

Steven of Creston; two brothers, Melvin of Atlantic and Reldon of Lenox; two sisters, Marie Miller of Lenox and Bonnie Trexler of

Lincoln, Neb., and eight grandchildren.

Maloney, Charles J -

Funeral services were held Jan. 29 at 1 p.m. at Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Lenox for Charles J. Maloney, 86. Mr. Maloney died Jan.

26 in Malvern.

Dr. Jack Cutbirth officiated and burial was in East Fairview Cemetery. Pallbearers were Michael Maloney, Steve, Floyd, Tom and

John Shinkle and Ronald Layton.  Honorary pallbearers were Bob Manroe, George Hermanson, George Ortman, Lloyd Leonard, Junior

Scrogge and George Weber.

Mr. Maloney was born May 14, 1900, in Taylor County, a son of James and Elizabeth Huber Maloney. He was reared on the family

farm five miles of Lenox.

He and Lois Shinkle were married in Creston June 21, 1928. They made in Taylor County, and farmed near Sharpsburg most of

their married life. They left the farm in 1974 and moved to Silver City to reside with their son and his family.

Mr. Maloney leaves his wife of the home in Silver City; a son, James Maloney of Omaha; a daughter, Carol Layton of San

Antonio, Texas; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Ray Maloney, and a sister, Mary Maloney.

Miller, Bessie Ruth Smith -

Funeral services were held Dec. 26 at the Lenox United Methodist Church for Bessie Ruth Smith Miller, 89, who died Dec. 22 at her home in Lenox.

The Rev. Elmer West officiated and burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak. Pallbearers were Howard Stoaks, Darrell Schowalter,

Phillip Preston, Wayne O'Riley, Julian Walter and Darrell Reynolds.

Mrs. Miller was born June 12, 1897, at Red Oak, third child of Joseph and Ellen Jane Patterson Smith. She taught school nine years

and was married to George Theron Miller April 28, 1925.

She was always ready to help when needed, and enjoyed her involvement in a Bible study club. She was a member of the United

Methodist Church in Lenox, and of United Methodist Women and the Friendly Neighbors Club. She enjoyed canning and yardwork, and

made quilts and afghans for her family. She liked to travel, and had made bus and train tours of the United States and Canada. She often visited the Iowa State Fair, and had made trips to Hawaii, Germany, Switzerland and other countries.

She leaves a daughter, Josephine Schomburg of Morton Mills; a son, Benne Miller of Lenox; a sister, Josephine Anderson of Red Oak; four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Miller, James Patrick -

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lenox for James Patrick Miller, 33. Mr.

Miller died Feb. 17 at his home in Iowa City.

The Rev. Gerald Stessman was celebrant of the mass and burial was in North Fairview Cemetery, Lenox, Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in

charge.

Pallbearers were Rick Tyler, Mike Richey, Jerry Henderson, Bob Hegwood, Bill Campbell and Tom Christensen.

Mr. Miller was born July 26, 1953, in Corning, son of Leo (Barner) and Madge Wheeler Miller. He had been a resident of Iowa City five

years. He had completed a year of study at the University of Iowa and was working in facilities for the handicapped. He was a member of St. Patrick's Church.

He is survived by his father of Lenox; mother, Madge Layne of Denver, Colo.; sister, Miriam Narmore of Wabash, Ind., and

brother, Richard of Oklahoma City.

Rogers, Orville -

The Rev. Robert Pickerell officiated at funeral services Dec. 23, for Orville Rogers, 85, who died Dec. 20 at his home in Lenox. The 2 p.m. service was at the United Methodist Church in Lenox and burial was in East Fairview Cemetery, Lenox.

Pallbearers were David Lundquigt, Raymond Dill, William Barrans, Robert Morris, Richard Trucks and Donald Tully.

Mr. Rogers was born Dec. 28, 1902, on a farm north of Lenox, son of Charles and Elizabeth Scott Rogers. He was baptized into the

Methodist Church as a child and had farmed west of Lenox most of his life.

He and Nellie Laura Smith were married March 16, 1921, and moved into Lenox after he retired from farming in 1968. She died in 1974.

In 1976, Mr. Rogers and Lena Mitchell were married, and resided in Creston, where she died in 1984.

He moved back to Lenox earlier this  year.

He is survived by a son, Howard Rogers of Lenox; a daughter, Evelyn Stotler of Portland, Texas; a brother, Robert Rogers of Lenox; two sisters, Faye Hockett of Lenox and Mary McGregor of Creston; 10 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and his wives, Mr. Rogers was preceded in death by two sons, Bobby and Hal; three brothers, Ernie, Alfha and

Ray, and two sisters, Effie Gibson and Vera Weaterman.

Slaten, J B -

J. B. Slaten, 63, Blockton, was fatally injured Jan. 18 in a two-vehicle crash southeast of Braddyville.

Slaten was driving west on Route JJ when a pickup driven by Karrisa D. Lekey, 18, Burlington Junction, crossed the median and

collided head-on with the Slaten pickup. The mishap occurred at about 12:50 p.m., authorities said. Neither driver was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, according to the accident report.

Both drivers were taken by Braddyville Rescue to the Clarinda Municipal Hospital. Slaten died in the hospital on Sunday afternoon.

The fatal accident occurred about three miles southeast of Braddyville two miles east of Highway 71 just south of the Missouri-Iowa line.

Slaten was driving a 1980 Plymouth pickup, while Lekey was driving a 1977 Ford pickup. Lekey was transferred to Heartland

East Hospital in St. Joseph, Mo. She reportedly suffered serious injuries that included lacerations, possible internal injuries and injuries, to the knees, ankles and wrists.

Snow and ice on the road may have contributed to the mishap, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Funeral services for Slaten are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Clearmont (Mo.) Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Lois, daughters Barbara Winkler of Des Moines, Beverly Gunter of Creston, Jo Carmack of Blockton, Janet Slaten of Des Moines and Belinda Slaten of Maryville.

Slaten was a farmer and formerly operated an implement dealership from his home.

Stephens, Wilson -

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 2 at the Clearfield United Methodist Church for Wilson Stephens, 84, who died at his

home west of there Jan. 30.

The Rev. Duane Ferguson officiated and burial was in Clearfield Cemetery. Pallbearers were Stanley Knox, John Wilson, Bill Brown,

Kenny Stephens, Leroy Beggs and Claude Hogue. Honorary pallbearers were Forrest Harvey, Pete Horton, Henry Calkin, Robert Brown and Lyle Knox.

Mr. Stephens was born Aug. 28, 1902, at Hartville, Mo., son of John and Laura Stephens. He attended Dunning Grade School in Taylor

County, and was graduated in 1918. After being graduated from Bedford High School in 1923, he attended Iowa State College in Ames, where he studied electrical engineering. He helped wire many rural homes in this area for electrification.

Mr. Stephens and Evelyn Knox were married Jan. 30, 1927. He served many years as an election judge for Taylor County and was

Grant Township trustee. He enjoyed being a trucker, and often helped acquaintances with moving. He was a farmer most of his life, and was able to drive a car and care for himself until the last five months of his life.

He always kept up on the latest happenings around Clearfield and his favorite pass time was playing cards with friends at the

Clearfield Cafe. He also enjoyed having coffee at the Tiger Den in Lenox.

He was devoted to his family, especially his great grandson, Brett Spicer, whom he nicknamed "Buffalo Bill."

Mr. Stephens is survived by a son, Ivan of Clearfield, and a daughter, Enid Huegel of Littleton, Colo.; two brothers, Jim and Howard

Stephens; a sister, Mary Brooke, four grandchildren and a great grandson. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and two

brothers, Cecil and Harold.

Stoaks, Bernice Beatrice Haas -

Funeral services were held Dec. 21 at 1 p.m. for Bernice Beatrice Stoaks, 78, who died Dec. 18 at her home in Lenox. The Rev. Floyd

Newbrough officiated at the services at the Lenox United Methodist Church. Pallbearers were Tim Jones, Pauley Bradley, Scott Bryant, Hal Minnick, Lary Christensen and Max Stoaks. Burial was in West Fairview Cemetery in Lenox, Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in charge.

Mrs. Stoaks was born July 22, 1908, daughter of Fredric and Bertha Smith Hass. She and Lyle B. Stoaks were married Jan. 8, 1930, in Des Moines.

Mrs. Stoaks was active in many community affairs, and was a fun-loving person who brightened the lives of those who knew her. She had

requested that her funeral be a celebration of the wonderful life she had.

She leaves two daughters, Jerry Jones of Lenox and Peggy Bradley of Trenton, Mo.; a son, Gail of Clarence; a sister, Velma Godden of

LaGrange Park, Ill., and five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister.

Tally, Edmund Joseph -

Last rites were held for Edmund Joseph Tally, 84, on Jan. 30 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Corning. Mr. Talty died Jan. 27 at Mercy Hospital in Corning.

Pallbearers at the services were Francis Mack, Mike Talty, Bob Thomas, Russell Vogel, Lyle Schrader and Bill Shuler. Honorary

pallbearers were Leona Schrader and Carol Thomas.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Corning.

Mr. Talty was born in Cass County Dec. 2, 1902, son of Joseph William and Helena Agnes McMahon Talty.

He and Marguerite Leona Magrath were married Nov. 29, 1928, Chicago. She preceded him in death March 29, 1979.

He leaves a son, Edwar R. Talty of Corning; a daughter, Mary Clare Rothfeld of Garden Grove, Calif.; a sister, Clare Hogan of Mesa, Ariz., and five grandsons.

Williams, Glen Thomas -

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lenox for Glen Thomas Williams, 71. Mr. Williams died Feb. 18 at Lenox Care Center.

The Rev. Gerald Stessman was celebrant of the mass and burial was in North Fairview Cemetery, Lenox. Pallbearers were John Cade,

Herb DeBolt, Lloyd Hamblin, Duane Beck, Kenneth John and George Sweeney.

Mr. Williams was born Jan. 1, 1916, at Tina, Mo., son of Herbert F. and Tura D. Young Williams. He attended rural schools in Taylor

County, and on May 11, 1940, was married to Margaret Donna Carruthers at St Patrick's Church in Lenox.

He and his wife lived on the farm southeast of Lenox where he had moved with his parents at the age of 4. They were there from 1946

until 1976, when they retired and moved to Ozark, Mo. They returned to Lenox in 1984.

Mr. Williams leaves a daughter, Janet Holben of Bedford; a brother, Melvin Williams of Lenox; a sister, Bernice Brown of Branson, Mo., and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a son Randall, and an infant brother and sister.
