Adkisson, Leona R Winslow -

Leona R. Adkisson was born January 18, 1917 at Conway, Iowa to Albia and Jessie (Loveland) Winslow.

Leona was united in marriage to Fred E. Adkisson on September 27, 1935 at Creston, Iowa. She enjoyed being a farm

wife and helping with all aspects of the daily chores. She was a good mother, kind and gentle. For her family came first

and she was devoted to their well being. She lived around Diagonal and Clearfield most of her life and had lived in

Mount Ayr for the past 10 years. Leona passed away on December 28, 2000 at the Clearview Home in Mount Ayr at

the age of 83 years.

Leona was preceded by her parents; her husband Fred on September 14, 1975; a son-in-law Max Buck; several brothers and

sisters; step son and step daughter-in-law Fred and Opal Adkisson; step son Edward Adkisson; step son-in-law Bill Powell.

Left to mourn her passing are her children Clara Buck of Mount Ayr and Eldon Adkisson and his wife Donna of Cedar Rapids,

Iowa; step son Harold Adkisson and his wife Marjorie of Mount Ayr; step daughter Violet Powell of Sioux City, Iowa and numerous

grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Services were held by Wilson-Watson & Armstrong F.H. Mount Ayr, Iowa on December 31, 2000 at 2:00 o'clock p.m.

Officiating was Reverend Charles Hawkins.

Organist was Mrs. Gregg Cannon Musical Selections were; "Amazing Grace" and "Precious Memories"

Casket bearers were; James Tull, Bart Parker, Randy Cook, Douglas Adkisson, Joseph Haidsiak, and Steven England.

Leona was laid to rest at the Clearfield Cemetery in Clearfield, Iowa.

Anderson, Benjamin Perry -

Ben Anderson, age 91, of New Market, Iowa, died Thursday, January 18, 2001 at the Clarinda Regional Health Center, Clarinda, Iowa.

Funeral services were held January 22, 2001 at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, with Rev. Dan Wiebesick officiating. Masonic

services were held Jan. 21 at the funeral home. Burial was in Memory Cemetery, New Market.

Memorials may be directed to United Methodist Church, New Market, Iowa. Walker-Merrick Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ben Anderson was born January 13, 1910, in Clearfield, Iowa to John and Belle (Franklin) Anderson. He was a 1928 graduate of Clearfield High

School and attended Nebraska Wesleyan College. He was united in marriage to Mary Swan on June 21, 1936. He was owner of the Rose and Turtle

lumberyard in New Market, Iowa. Ben was an active member of the United Methodist Church, New Market, serving on all church boards and was

Sunday School Superintendent for a number of years. Ben was a member of the Gideons. He was a member of the Plainsmen's chorus.

Ben was active in fraternal and civic organizations. He was a long-term member of the New Market Masonic Lodge, serving as secretary for

over 50 years, a member of the Moila Shrine; and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. He was coordinator of the New Market

centennial in 1981.

Ben was a past school board member of the New Market School District, New Market city clerk, on the library board of New Market  and

on the board of the Taylor County Historical Society.

Survivors include his wife Mary, a resident of Westridge Manor, Clarinda; children: Ann LaFontaine and her husband Wayne of Urbandale,

IA; Charles (Ed) and wife Jancie of Gresham, Oregon; Margaret Johnson and husband Jim of Hart, Michigan, Birdice Jobe and husband Jim of

New Market; Teresa Harbacheck and husband Joe of Boise, Idaho; 15 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and a brother Edward Anderson

and wife Thelma of Cedar Rapids, IA.

His parents, two brothers, Franklin Anderson, Mark Anderson and great grandchild Katelyn Anderson preceded him in death.

Bush, Wado R -

Wado R. Bush, a resident of Ephrata since 1935, died on January 9th, surrounded by family  and friends. Wade was born on

February 23, 1911, in Hooker, Oklahoma, the 3rd child of Lawrence and Elnora Bush.

Wado grew up in the small farning community of Clearfield, Iowa, where he excelled in football, basketball, baseball and

track in Clearfield High School, from which he graduated in 1930.

He was offered an Athletic Scholarship to Drake University, but was forced to decline to work, since the Depression was near.

At the urging of his aunt, Wado "went West" to Ephrata in 1935, where he worked for the highway department and harvested

wheat each fall. He asked Margaret Bailey to join him, and they were married April 3, 1937.

From 1940 to 1949 Wado was a Deputy with the Grant County Sheriff's Office, and loved to tell stories of his wild and

dangerous experiences.

From 1949 to 1957 Wado operated the golf course in Sun Lakes Park, just north of Ephrata.

From 1957 until he retired Wado drove a school bus for the Ephrata School District, where his passengers became some of his

most ardent admirers, many of whom visited him in his final hours.

In retirement he was a true sportsman.

Wado was preceded in death by his loving wife, Margaret, to whom he was faithfully married and devoted for 53 years,

and his yappy dog, Moukee. Wado is survived by his daughter, Marcia Ellen Bush; his son, Wado Joe Bush; his grandson, Bryan

Emerson Bush; and granddaughter, Ally Cavalletto Bush.

Funeral Services were held Monday Jan. 15, 2001 at Nicoles Funeral Home.

Camden, Florence Lucile Shafer -

Funeral services for Florence Camden. age 87, of Lenox, who died Monday, February 12. 2001 at the Lenox Care Center were held Thursday,

February 15, 2001 at 10:30 a.m. at Ritchie Funeral Home with Pastor Dena Vittorio officiating. Interment was held at the West Fairview

Cemetery in Lenox. Memorials can be given in her name.

Services were conducted by the Ritchie Funeral Home of Lenox.

Florence Lucille Camden was born December 25, 1913 in Diagonal, the daughter of Samuel L. Shafer and Harriett Reynolds Shafer. Florence

grew up in the Diagonal-Tingley area attending country schools On January 31, l934 she was united in marriage to Roy Jacob Camden in

Conrydon.

Florence and Roy moved to Lenox from Corydon a few years later.

Florence was a homemaker and had also worked many years at Copeland-Wells Hatchery, the Sheridan Egg Company and at various restaurants

around town. She was a member of the Navy Mothers in Lenox. Florence loved to work in her garden where she raised both flowers

and produce. She enjoyed canning and baking.

Florence is survived by her husband Roy of Lenox; a son, James Camden of Pomeroy; four daughters, Joan Helm and husband Reed of Lenox; Opal

Hawkinson and husband Clarence of Lenox; Judy Browning and husband Bill of Lenox; and Joyce Probasco of Clovis, New Mexico; a daughter-in-

law, Mrs. John (Kay) Camden of Lenox; a sister, Marie Neeley of Glendale, Arizona; eighteen grandchildren; thirty-three greatgrandchildren

and seven great great-grandchildren along with many nieces, nephews and friends.

Preceding Florence in death were her parents Samuel and Harriett; two sons, Jack and Jerry at infancy; two brothers, Orville Shafer and

Harold Shafer; a stepbrother, Chester Keller; two sisters, Opal Baxter and Myrtle Cummmgs; a grandson; John Benjamin Camden; two

granddaughters, Joann Hess and Brenda Camden; and two greatgranddaughters, Amber Rumbley and Anita Rumbley.

Goins, Donald Ray -

On July 9, 1947, Donald Ray Goins was born to Lloyd and Edith Goins. He was the first brother to Shirley, his older sister.

His father worked in power line construction in different locations during these years. Two more brothers, Rex and Jim, were born

before the family moved to a farm west of Diagonal. Two more sisters Betty and Linda, were born after the family moved to Diagonal.

Donald began his school years at the country school Lincoln #7: continuing his education at Diagonal Community School where he

graduated from high school in 1965.

Donald attended Iowa State University for a year and worked a few years with his dad and brother Jim, in the dairy business. He was

then employed by Federal Crop Insurance.

In June of 1968 Donald was united in marriage to Ruth Tridle at the Diagonal Christian Church. One son, Darin, was born to this

union. Donald and Ruth were divorced in 1979.

On February 1, 1981 Donald married June England and they made their home in Casar, North Carolina, where they enjoyed

gardening, farming, and dancing. He continued working some for Federal Crop Insurance.

Donald's health had declined rapidly the past several months. He was taken to the Cleveland Medical Clinic at Shelby, North

Carolina on February 3, where he died on the evening of February 9.

Preceding him death were his father, his brother Rex, and his wife June.

Surviving him are his mother Edith; his son Darin and wife Cindy of Murray; sister Shirley Jones and husband Ron of Webb City,

Missouri; brother Jim and wife Joy of Diagonal; sister Betty Greenlee and husband Keith of Pleasantville; sister Lind Van Pelt and

husband Bill of Urbandale; two half brothers Lloyd Goins of Axtell, Kansas and Bill Goins of Harton, Kansas; two step-daughters

Carol Kinder of Hatfield, Missouri and Tammy Samo of Clarinda, Iowa, and four stepsons, Robert England of Casar, North Carolina;

Jerry England of Bagley, Iowa; Dennis England of Fort Worth, Texas; and Terry England of Washington, Iowa. Also left to mourn

are nieces, nephews, cousins, step grandchildren and step great grandchildren.

Donald made friends easily. He enjoyed people and made many visits on his trips back to Diagonal. He will be missed by those who

knew and loved him.

He was a member of the Diagonal Christian Church and past member of the Diagonal Lions and the Masonic Lodge.

Funeral Services were held for Donald Ray Goins on Wednesday, February 14, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. at the Wilson-Watson and

Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa. Officiating was Reverend John Brillo. Musicians were; Judy Newton, and John

Allen. Casket bearers were; Tom Fletcher, Clair Newton, Frank Gunsolley, Ron Overholser, Jim Stephens, and Ed Alice. Donald

was laid to rest at the Diagonal Cemetery in Diagonal, Iowa

Hetz, Clifford George -

Clifford George Hetz, son of Nelle L and Chris D. Hetz was born in Lenox, Iowa, on February 21. 1924, and passed away at his home in San Diego,

Cal. on December 14, 2000.

Clifford attended Beachdale Country School south of Lenox and graduated from Lenox High in 1941. After graduation he went to San Diego to

visit his sister and brother-in-law, Vivienne and Floyd Boyles. His decision to stay started the rest of the Hetz families' move to California.

In September 1944 Clifford and Wanda Jeanne Dunn were married. To their union two children were born, James Harold and Kirstine Vivienne.

Clifford was a plumber, taking early retirement due to his health.

Clifford had many hobbies among them photography, coin and gun collection. He enjoyed playing his guitar and square dancing.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Wanda, son James of Aguana, Cal., daughter Kristine and husband Dennis Isaacs of Spring Valley, Cal.;

three grandchildren Janine Haynes, Jennifer and Clifford John Isaacs; three greatgrandchildren Shawn Michael and Cory Matthew Haynes and

Alexis Ryan Isaacs; his brother Norman B. Hetz; two sisters, Vivienne B. Boyles and Donna Luella Monroe, all of San Diego; four nephews, Donald

Clark Manroe, Clifford D. Hetz, Norman George Hetz, and Larry W. Boyles; a niece Kathryne Luella Beaulieu, and many other relatives and friends.

Clifford was preceded in death by his father and mother.

Complying with Clifford's wishes no services were held.

Interment was in Singing Hills Memorial Park in El Cojon, Cal.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Moore, Raymond T -

Raymond T. Moore of Cedar Rapids, born Sept. 18, 1903, in Lenox, son of Bud and Carrie Moore, died Jan. 22, 2001.

He graduated from Lenox High, U.N.I., and started teaching school. After a few years he left teaching and

established the  Kay T. Moore Insurance Agency, retiring in 1968.

He was quite the golfer, too.

Raymond married Helma Mieras, and to this union were born three children: Ronald, Kenneth, and Janis.

Preceding him in death were his wife in 1992, his son Kenneth in 1943, two brothers, Clark and Vaughn, and one sister

Berdice.

He leaves to mourn his son Ronald, wife Maude, daughter Janis, two granddaughters Britt and Engrid, sister Freda

Pierce of Vancouver WA, and a brother Jack (wife Joyann) of Northridge CA, as well as several nieces and

nephews. From Lenox are a niece Vivian Straight and a great nephew Randy Samo.

Nelson, Helen Margie Johnston -

Helen Margie Johnston Nelson was born April 29, 1916 to Mary Estes Baker and Veril Golden Johnston in Knowlton,

Iowa. She died February 8, 2001.

She had two brothers, Vern and Myron and a sister Merna.

Her childhood was spent in Ringgold County surrounded by cousins. During high school, Helen  boarded in Mt. Ayr to

attend school during the week. Helen graduated from high school in Diagonal Helen wanted to be a hairdresser but her

dad convinced her to go to school to be a teacher.

She taught in country schools in Ringgold and Taylor counties before she married.

Helen married Horace B. Nelson on May 28, 1942. They lived on the farm 2 miles south of Clearfield until their retirement

when they moved into town.

During WWII she followed Horace and lived for short periods of time in Pennsylvania, Texas, and California They had 5

children, Eugene, Ronald (died in infancy), Ruth, Leroy and Randall.

Helen was a hard worker. She always raised a big garden and canned the produce. Helen always raised chickens to eat and

to have eggs. She instilled a sense of value and a work ethic to her children. Everyone was welcome into Helen's home. At

several times she opened her home to those who were sick or needed help.  Grandmother Nelson and Grandfather Johnston

and Ivan Nelson spent many months in her home.  She willingly moved clothes around to make room for the guests.

Helen was active in the Christian Church. She taught Sunday School for several years. She decorated the bulletin boards

for the church. She directed the Christmas programs for several years.

Helen participated in Ladies Auxiliary and was a 4-H leader for several years. She enjoyed doing crafts and was very artistic.

She made several quilts for family members as gifts.

Helen was especially proud of her grandchildren. They were Nick, Kristin, and Lauren Nelson of Des Moines. Megan and

Michelle Stowe of Gillette, Wyo., Clifford and Alicia Nelson of Moravia, Tiffany, Christopher, and Ashley Nelson of Knoxville.

She is survived by her children Eugene and children, Ruth, Bob, and children, Leroy and Mary Ann and children, Randall, Sherri

and children, sister Merna Johnston, sisters-in-law Rhoda Johnston and Cuma Johnston and a host of nieces and nephews

and grand nieces and cousins.

She is preceded m death by her parents. Ronald Dee, Horace and brothers, and brothers-in-law, Vern, Myron, Lyle and Ivan.

Funeral Services were held for Helen Margie Nelson at the Christian Church in Clearfield, Iowa on Tuesday, February 13,

2001 at 10:30 o'clock  a.m. Officiating was Reverend Eydie Stephens. Musicians were Jean Huffman, and Kathy Nelson.

Casket bearers were: Jim Mason, Kenny Nelson, Clinton Brown, Richard Mackey, Jerry Huffine and Alan Brown. She was laid to

rest at the Clearfield Cemetery in Clearfield, Iowa.

Parkins, Donald Lee -

Graveside services were held March 2, 2001 at the Clearfield Cemetery for Donald Lee Parkins of Council Bluffs, Iowa. A

visitation was held at 11:30 a.m. in Council Bluffs, and graveside services were at 3:30 at the Clearfield cemetery with Pastor

Eydie Stephens officiating.

Donald passed away at the age of 61 on February 27, 2001 in Bergan Mercy Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, after suffering a stroke

in January.

Donald, the son of Grant and Elda Walton Parkins, was born December 14, 1939 on the family farm east of Clearfield. Donald

was known as Don and sometimes Donnie to his family and friends.

He grew up on the farm where he was born and attended Clearfield School until he graduated from High School. Don worked in the

Des Moines and Cedar Rapids area for several years before moving to Omaha, Nebraska. While in Omaha he bought a locksmith

business and continued that business until he became ill.

In the 1980's Don bought a small farm east of Council Bluffs, Iowa. He enjoyed working his farm until the last 2 years. Don enjoyed

raising a vegetable garden the first few years on his farm, giving a lot of his produce to his neighbors.

Don is survived by his wife Violetta, daughter Susanna of the home; son David of Jacksonville, Florida; daughter Sherry of

Omaha, Neb.; one granddaughter of Jacksonville, Florida; one sister Geneva Adkisson and husband Lavern of Clearfield, Iowa; five

nephews and one niece; Gerald Adkisson and wife Vanetta of Bedford, Iowa; Alan Adkisson and wife Diane of Corning, Iowa;

Rodney Adkisson of Knoxville, Iowa; Tracey Adkisson and wife Marie of Johnston, Iowa; Gordon Adkisson of Diagonal, Iowa; Lori

Nelson and husband Brad of Pella, Iowa.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents Grant and Elda Parkins.

Payton, W Howard -

W. Howard Payton, age 101, a 44-year resident of Stevens County, passed away on February 11, 2001 at his Addy, Wash. home.

Howard was born on December 22, 1899 in Bedford, the son of Samuel L. and Inez (Parrish) Payton. Howard was raised and

attended school in the Bedford area and worked on the 400-acre corn, oat, hog and cattle family farm.

At the age of 22, Howard married Vera Bristow on August 22, 1922. In 1948 he vacationed with his family to the Northwest

and never returned to Iowa to stay.

Howard worked on the Columbia Basin Canal system and the Moses Lake airbase as a cement finisher. At the completion

of these projects, Howard and his son, Sam, had a cattle operation near Northport for several years, and then a dairy at

Bluecreek.

In 1976, after Howard returned, he was hired by Herman Pein to do all the field work on a 400 acre farm near Addy, Wash.,

supporting one of the largest dairy herds in Sieves County.

Howard's life spanned from the horse and buggy days to a man on the moon. His ambition was to live past January 1, 2000,

which would accomplish his living during 3 centuries. Howard worked until he was 93 when his eyesight and arthritis slowed him down.

Howard's wife, Vera, passed away February 7, 1977.

He is survived by his son, Sam Payton and wife Alica of Chewelah, Wash; daughters Donna Brumfield, Norwalk, Iowa, Dorothy Glass, Moses

Lake, Wash.; sister Jessie Heninger, Belfast, Maine; 10 grandchildren; 16 Great Grandchildren; 22 Great- great grandchildren.

The funeral service was held on February 16 at the Calvary Baptist Church in Chewelah, Wash. Graveside service and vault interment

followed at the Mountain View Park Cemetery in Colville, WA.

Memorial contributions can be given to N.E. Washington Home Health Services, P.O. Box 808, Chewelah, WA 99109.

Danekas Funeral Chapel and Crematory was in charge of the arrangements.

Schooling, Elma Frances Diggs -

Funeral services for Elma Frances Schooling, 85 of Creston, Iowa, were held Saturday Jan. 20, 2001 at the Coen-Beaty-

Pearson Family Funeral Service in Corning.

Burial was at Prairie Rose cemetery. Memorials are suggcsted to the family.

Mrs. Schooling died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at the Crest Haven Care Centre in Creston, Iowa.

She was born Sept. 26, 1915 near Hawleyvillc, Iowa to Frank and Alta (Hoffman) Diggs. She was united in marriage to Ralph

Schooling March 16, 1935 at the KFNF Radio station in Shenandoah, Iowa along with 14 other couples. They lived with her

parents the first year of marriage, then moved to a farm near Lenox, Iowa. In 1950, they bought and moved to

Ralph's home place near Bushville, Iowa. They retired from farming in 1981, sold the farm and moved to Creston, Iowa. She

lived there until 1998, then resided at the Crest Haven Care Centre for two years. She spent the last eight months with

her son Garry at his home in Creston, Iowa.

Through the years Elma helped with all the farm work, cared for two nieces, Deana and Alice, until they were four years old,

and helped family and friends during times of illness.

Pallbearers for Elma were Lisa Nicholson, Jody Schooling, Mark Schooling, Roger "Gene" Schooling, Tracy Schooling, Ronald

Schooling, Jr., and Kenny Schooling.

Honorary Pallbearers were Harley Diggs, Lowell Dugan, Francis Diggs, Robert Wiley, Donald Wiley, George Schofield, Kenneth

Fudge, Franklin Walter, Terry Curry, Roscoe Schooling. Don Heflefinger and Wallace Klakken.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ralph Schooling, June 18, 1989; grandson, Chris Schooling; sisters,

Lela Wirth, Stella Nickell, Zella Wiley; and a brother, Hildred Diggs.

Survivors include three sons; Ronald Schooling, Sr. (wife, Judy) of Red Oak, Iowa, Garry Schooling of Creston, Iowa and Larry

Schooling of Red Oak, Iowa; sisters: Beulah Wiley of Bedford, Iowa, Dorothy LaVoughn (husband, Lowell) Dugon of Gravity. Iowa and

Elzene Diggs of Clarinda, Iowa; brothers: Harley Diggs of Clarinda, Iowa and Francis (wife, Reta) Diggs of Bedford, Iowa; sister-in-law,

 Phyllis Diggs of Hopkins, Missouri; seven grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; many other relatives and friends.

Sexton, Helen Lee Akers -

Funeral services for Hazel Sexton, age 92, of Lenox, who died Thursday, February 1, 2001, were held Monday, February 5,

2001 at 10:30 .m. at the Lenox Christian Church with Pastor Dena Vittorio officiating.

Interment was held in the Washington Cemetery in Gravity.

Memorials can be directed to the Lenox Christian Church.

Services were conducted by the Ritchie Funeral Home of Lenox.

Hazel Lea Sexton was born March 17, 1908 in Gravity, Taylor County, Iowa, the daughter of Oscar Akers and Cory Mae Brand Akers. Hazel

grew up in the Gravity area attending rural schools and the Gravity High School.

On May 24, 1926, she was united in marriage to Carl Sexton in Coming, Iowa. The couple lived in New Market until the late 1930's when they

moved back to Gravity, living there until 1946 when they moved to Lenox where she resided until her death.

Hazel was very active around the home and in the community. She was a member of the Rebecca Lodge and the Iowa Order of Odd Fellows,

which was a big part of her life. She enjoyed crocheting and quilting, keeping herself active until the last two years when her health started

to fail. She was a member of the Lenox Christian Church.

Hazel is survived by her daughter, Phyllis Murdock of Independence, Iowa; five sisters, Hattie Clark of Villisca; Gertie Weil of Villisca; Evelyn

Thompson and husband Cloyd of Parump, Nevada, Coryal Bellinger of Missouri; Bernita Ritnor of Omaha, Neb. and Edna Posten and husband Dean of

Gravity; a daughter-in-law, Karen Myers and husband Mike of Springfield, Mo.; four grandchildren, Vicki Cox and husband Brent of Ankeny;

Pamela Kauffman and husband David of Cedar Rapids; Curt Sexton and wife Michelle of Austin, Texas; and Kenda Andrews and husband Jeff of

Springfield, Mo.; and six greatgrandchildren, Tyler Cox of Ankeny; Aaron Kauffman and Angie Kauffman, both of Cedar Rapids; Nathan Sexton and

Brooklyn Sexton, both of Austin, Texas and Jordan Andrews of Springfield, Mo.

Preceding Hazel in death are her husband, Carl in 1975; her parents, Oscar and Cora; a son Darwin; two brothers, Wayne and Cecil Akers; and

a sister Helen Savage.

Skinner, Ralph P -

Ralph P Skinner, of Blockton passed away January 1, 2001, at the Worth County Convalescent Center in Grant City, Missouri, at

the age of 85.

Ralph Skinner, the son of Fred and Francis (Gray) Skinner, was born October 29, 1915, in Kellerton, Iowa. He graduated from

Mount Ayr High School in 1936, and Northwest Missouri State University in 1962;. He was united in marriage to Jean Davis

on November 28, 1937. He taught school most of his life, 10 years in Blockton, and 20 years in Bedford. He grew up in the

Kellerton, Mount Ayr, and Shannon City areas before moving to Blockton in 1946. He also was a coach for many years.

He is survived by three children, Bennie Lee (wife Rita) Davis, Brunswick, Georgia; Mary Jo (husband Glenn) Hughs, Grant

City, Missouri; and Fred Arthur (wife Virginia) Skinner, Blockton; special friend Lyla Enabnit; eight grandchildren and many great

grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife in 1982; brothers Cloyd, and Frances Skinner; sister, Velta Vanderflught and

a great grandchild

Services were held January 3 at the Christian Church in Blockton, with Reverend Scott Marcum and the Reverend Bill

Farrens officiating. Burial was at the Rose Hill Cemetery, Blockton.

A memorial has been established in his name.

Smith, Thomas Edison -

Thomas Edison Smith, age 71, passed away on February 11, 2001, at 9:40 p.m. at the Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Neb.

Thomas was the son of Ebb Smith and Valda Viola Walker Smith. He was born on December 3, 1919 in Clarinda. He also attended school in

Clarinda.

Thomas was united in marriage to Judith Ann Rine on November 15, 1967. They have been married 34 years and have four children; Michelle Sanchez,

Tom Smith, Michael Smith and Allen and wife, Julie Smith and seven grandchildren to cherish his memory.

Thomas worked construction, was a semi-truck driver and hauled scrap iron until he was admitted to the Sidney Iowa Health Care Center. He was

also a loving father to all his children and grandchildren and a great friend to many people whom he met in his life and most of all a loyal husband.

Thomas will be missed by many people especially by his wife, children, grandchildren and all his friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughters Dawn and Tammy Smith and a son-in-law, Fortino Sanchez.

Graveside services were held at the Riverton, Iowa cemetery on February 14, 2001, with Pastor Tim Maxa of Lenox, Iowa officiating. Pallbearers

were John McLaughlin, Allen Smith, Michael Smith, James Teague, Sr., James Teague, Jr., and Randy Perry.

Shull Funeral Home in Riverton, Iowa was in charge of arrangements.

Weeda, Clarissa Opal Brown -

Opal Weeda, age 89, died in a Kansas City, MO hospital January 7, 2001. Funeral services were held January 11, at 11:00 a.m. at the Ritchie Funeral

Home in Bedford with the Pastor Bryan Hansen officiating. Burial was in the Washington Cemetery at Gravity.

Clarissa Opal Weeda was one of ten children born to William Brown and Clarissa Hamblin Brown on April 4, 1911. She grew up in the Gravity area until

her family moved to Conway in 1921. She graduated from the Conway Schools. On March 19, 1935 she was united in marriage to Irven Weeda in

Clarinda, Iowa. To this loving union three children were born.

Irven and Opal came to the Bedford area in 1935, shortly after their marriage and farmed the Hardin farm north of Bedford until 1941 when they

moved to the Ahren's farm south of Conway. They eventually purchased a farm south of the Ahrens farm, where they remained until their retirement in

1981, when they moved to Bedford. Opal loved being a farmer's wife, baking and cooking, and being associated with the many duties of farm life.

Opal and Irven loved to travel, visiting many places throughout the United States, and even making a trip to Spain. Opal always took great pride and joy

in looking after her family and friends. Preparing large meals for them was her specialty.

Opal moved to Independence, Missouri, the last six months of her life to be closer to her family. While living there, she quickly made many new friends and

enjoyed frequent visits from all of her family. Opal was a nondenominational Christian worshiper.

Left to cherish Opal's memory are her brother, Dale Brown of Harlan, Iowa; two children, Raymond Weeda and wife Karen; and Roy Dean Weeda

and wife Dixie; a son-in-law  Harlan Larison, all of Lees Summit, Missouri; nine grandchildren, Randy Weeda, Rick Weeda, Kimberly Weeda Weddle, Troy

Weeda, Cory Weeda, Kristie Weeda Sapp, Philip Larison, Mark Larison and Stan Larison; thirteen greatgrandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.

Preceding Opal in death are her husband Irven in 1999; a daughter, Twyla Weeda Larison in 2000; her parents, William and Clarissa; six brothers, Glenn,

Eddie, Oran, Dee, Orville and Horace Brown; two sisters, Mamie VanLoon Hayes and Jessie Colter.
