Black, Samuel Adam -

Sam Black, 88, long-time resident of Lenox, died March 4th, 1976, at the Crest Haven Care Center in Creston.

Samual Adam Black, son of George W. Black and Margaret Mawhinney Black, was born in Taylor County, Iowa on October 19, 1887. He died at the age of 88 years, four

months and 15 days after a short illness.

"Sam" as he was better known, grew through boyhood here in Lenox, Iowa, and as a young man always liked to hunt and fish. Sam was especially proud of a picture of

himself and a good friend with their catch of ducks after a particularly good day.

He was preceded in death by his mother in 1948, his father in 1935; two brothers, Virble Black of Lenox, and two nieces and a nephew.

Sam had always worked and been active. For  many years he worked at the Barber & Boltinghouse Hardware and also for Benders. He especially liked to visit and help

other people.

He moved to the Crest Haven Care Center from Lenox two years ago after his health no longer permitted him to stay in his home. During this time he and his sister were

able to spend many hours together. Sam always enjoyed folks from Lenox stopping to see him. He will be missed by his family and friends.

Funeral services were held Sunday, March 7th at 2:00 p.m. from the Larkin-Bender Funeral Home with Rev. Floyd Newbrough officiating.

Music was furnished by Norma Paymal, organist.

Casket bearers were Kenny Black, Don Black, Donald Bubb, Rollie Bender, Roy Welch and Claude Dixon.

Interment was in East Fairview cemetery in Lenox.

Copeland, Ethyl Runyan -

Funeral services were held Monday morning for Mrs. Ethyl Copeland, 91, who died March 18th.

Ethyl, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Runyan, was born on a farm four miles south of Lenox on June 15th, 1884. Her age at the time of death was 91 years, 9 months

and 3 days.

She moved with her parents to their home on West Ohio Street when she was four years old. She attended elementary and high school at Lenox. She attended Tarkio

College where she took voice and piano lessons. She gave music lessons for several years.

She was united in marriage to Otto Leslie Copeland on September 16, 1909. To this union two daughters, Gretchen and Phyllis were born.

She joined the United Presbyterian Church in October of 1894 under the pastorate of the Rev. J. H. Brown. She sang in the choir also played the organ and piano and at

her death she had been a member over 82 years.

She was a charter member of the M.F.O. Club of Lenox and also a member of the Fortnightly club and a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother and two brothers, Earl and Glen Runyan.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters; Mrs. Phyllis Fisher of Lenox; and Ms. Gretchen  Walter of Arcadia, Calif.; four grandchildren: Cheryl, William, Michael and Sandra and five great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

Rev. Albert J. Clements officiated at the 10 a.m. services Monday morning held at the Larkin-Bender Funeral Home.

Music was famished by Margaret Whipp, organists and Forrest Whipp, vocalist.

Casket bearers were Guy Henderson, Bill Henderson, Bud Carey, Forrest Whipp, Donald Tully, and Harold Maynes.

Interment was in West Fairview cemetery at Lenox.

Dunbar, Donald -

Mrs. Dick Dunbar received word that her son, Donald, of Knoxville, Iowa, had passed away on February 26th.

He had been in the hospital only a few days when death came.

Funeral services were held in Knoxville on March 1st.

Eberle, Zelda Ethel Costin -

Final rites were held Monday, March 29th for Zelda Eberle, 68, a resident of the Stringtown area.

Zelda Ethel Eberle, daughter of Bill and Bertha Young Costin, was born on October 9, 1907 at Denton, Kansas and passed away at her home north of Stringtown March 27, 1976

at the age of 68 years, 5 months and 20 days,.

She moved from Denton to the Sharpsburg community when she was a small child. She became a member of the Blue Grove Christian Church south of Lenox when she was

a young girl.

On January 5, 1934, she was married with Floyd Eberle at Maryville, Missouri. She is survived by her husband Floyd and  her mother, Bertha Costin of Creston as well as by many  nephews, nieces and cousins.

Rev. Donald Briley officiated at the 2:00 p.m. service Monday, held at the Larkin-Bender Funeral Home.

Music was furnished by Joyce Brown.

Casket bearers were Armond Travis, Glenndon Walters, Earl Roberts, Cleo Philips, Charles Botkin and Joe Mulford.

Interment was in West Fairview cemetery at Lenox.

Emig, Jerry Lynn -

Jerry Emig, 23, former resident of Lenox, died Saturday, March 27th in Kansas City, Kansas. He had been injured and seriously burned in a one car accident nine days earlier.

Jerry Lynn Emig, son of Gerald Henry Emig and Darlene Lucille Lantz Emig of Lenox, was born Oct. 15, 1952 at Lamoni, Iowa. He was 23 years, 5 months and 12 days

of age at the time of his death.

He was united in marriage to Lynn Carol Russman in October, 1970. He farmed at Maysville, Mo., and enjoyed hunting and fishing. His greatest pleasure was being with his nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his father on Oct. 28, 1973 and his grandparents.

Surviving to cherish his memory are his wife Lynn and mother, Darlene, three brothers and three sisters, five nephews and four nieces, Charles Gary and wife Linda, children

Tommy and Cheri of Eagleville, Mo.; Larry Lee and wife Carol and children Kirk and Kerry Sue of Eagleville, Mo, Karyn Kay Graham and husband Bob, children Robbie and Kelly of Benton, Iowa; Donna Rae Hardisty and husband Don and son David of Corning, Iowa, Darla Diann Brown and husband Don and children Dawn and Duke of Gulfport, Mississippi, Rodney Alan at home in Lenox, and a host of relatives and friends.

Graveside services were held at 12:30 in the Maple Row cemetery at Kellerton, Iowa.

Grant, Ethel Walter -

Ethel Walter Grant, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. L. N. Walter, was born in Adams County, Iowa, on Sept. 30, 1906 and died following a heart attack on Feb. 6, 1976

at the Memorial Hospital in Long Beach, California. Interment was at Sunnyside Memorial Gardens in that city.

She was preceded in death by her husband, W. S. Grant, her parents and one brother, Clifford L. Walter. She is survived by her brother Julian Walter, his wife, Josephine, a

nephew, Marvin Walter of Kirkland, Washington, and three nieces, Mrs. Jean Smith of Beaverton, Oregon, Mrs. Joan Lucas of Pella, Iowa, Mrs. Sandra DeYoung of Temple

City, California and their families.

Ethel graduated from Lenox High School, attended Simpson College in Indianola where she was affiliated with Tri Delta, and later a Business College in Long Beach

and was employed for several years as a cashier at the Bank of America. She was married in Manila, Philippines Islands and spent several years in the Orient after which they moved

to Long Beach, residing there until her death.

She was a member of the First Methodist Church of Long Beach, the Order of the Eastern Star, the Daughters of the Nile and the Ebell Club. She will be greatly missed

by her family and friends.

Hofer, Herman H (Dutch) -

Herman (Dutch) Hofer, 85, died at the Lenox Care Center Friday, Feb. 27th.

Herman H. Hofer, son of Frederick J. and Elsbeth Bernhard Hofer, was born at Taylor Ridge, Ill. in Rock Island County on Nov. 11, 1890 and passed away on Feb. 27th,

1976 at the Lenox Care Center at the age of 85 years, 3 months and 16 days.

"Dutch" as he was better known, grew to manhood in the Taylor Ridge community and moved to Lenox in 1913. He farmed while living here.

In 1915, he was married to Pearl Maharry One son, Williard Clair Hofer was born to bless this union.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Pearl; one sister, Lydia Huber and one brother, Ernest Hofer.

On June 3, 1955, he was married to Ruth Hufnagel at Mountain Home, Arkansas. They operated a motel there until he retired in 1956. Dutch moved back to the Lenox community eight years ago to make his home here.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth of Lenox: his son, Williard Clair "Bill"' Hofer and his wife Jayne of Memphis, Tennessee; 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; one

brother, Clair Hofer of Houston, Texas, and one sister, Eliska Noble of Wichita, Kansas; several nieces nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 1st at 1:30 p.m. from the Larkin-Bender Funeral Home with Rev. Donald Briley officiating.

Music was furnished by Ruth Boltinghouse.

Casket bearers were George Grey, Ed Ryan, Tony Arnone, Ted Bruington, Barney Miller, and Myrle Henderson.

Interment was in West Fairview cemetery.

Hoover, Harold H -

Mrs. Hal Moyle received word of the death of Harold H. Hoover, 79, of Portland, Oregon on Feb. 16, 1976.

Mr. Hoover was a former Lenox resident and a brother of the late Mary E. Moyle.

He is survived by his wife, Sylvia,  one daughter Barbara Fitzgerald, of Vancouver, Washington and one step daughter, Midge Hanson of Portland, Oregon.

Services were held at Portland on Feb. 19th.

Lundquist, Carl Mannie -

Funeral services were held for Carl Mannie Lundquist, 83, who died February 12th, at the Rosary Hospital in Corning, Iowa.

Carl Mannie Lundquist, son of C. J. and Betsy Pehrson Lundquist, was born on Nov. 2, 1892 near Stanton, Iowa.

He was baptized in infancy in the Mamrelund Lutheran Church at Stanton and later attended the Fairview Christian Church after the family moved to Taylor County. He

served for 16 months in the service of his country during World War I and then returned to Iowa where he farmed for many years.

He was united in marriage to Carrie Wycoff on February 25, 1930. To this union three children were born: Charles, Alice and Doris.

He is survived by his wife, Carrie of Lenox; a son, Charles and his wife Deva of Lenox; two daughters, Alice and her husband James Boozan of Warrenton, Mo.; and Doris,

and her husband, Bill West  of Clarinda, Iowa; six grandchildren, Daniel, Robin and Aimee Boozan, David Lundquist,  Burton and Brenda West; two brothers, Henry Lundquist

of Corning and Clarence Lundquist of Tice, Florida; 2 sisters, Mrs. Esther Johnson of Clarinda and Mrs. Elsie McPherrin of Camas, Washington.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Arthur and Martin and by two sisters, Anna Hill and Signe Little. He will be greatly missed by his family and

friends.

The 2:00 o'clock services were held at the Larkin-Roland Funeral Home with Rev. James W. King officiating.

Music was furnished by Norma Paymal, organist and Marilyn Beck and Billie Jean Barker, vocalists.

Casket bearers were Ray Johnson, Terry Lundquist, Drexel Lundquist, Carol Little, Russell Lundquist and W. A. Allison.

Military rites were conducted by OURCQ Post No. 117.

Interment was in Prairie Rose Cemetery.

Madden, Hugh Joseph -

Hugh Joseph Madden, former resident of Lenox, passed away Saturday evening, April 3rd in Omaha, Nebr., at the age of 75 years, 7 months and 7 days.

He was born on a farm near Lenox, Iowa, Aug. 27, 1900, the son of Dennis and Mary Madden who preceded him in death.

Surviving to cherish his memory are five sisters, Lizzie Hill of Corning, Nellie Smith of Creston, Delia Boltinghouse of Lenox, Marcella Madden of Creston and Alice (Mrs.

Frank) Cunningham of Nortonville, Kansas.

Father Daniel O'Connell officiated at the burial mass Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock in St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lenox.

Music was furnished by Jane Rychnovsky.

Pall bearers were Barney Miller, Leo Ryan, Bob Callahan, Rollie Bender, Art Schweers and Raymond Miller.

Interment was in St. Patrick's cemetery.

Matheny, Ruth Alma Reeves -

Ruth Alma Matheny, 100, died Feb. 14th, 1976 at the Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr following a short illness. She was the mother of Claude Matheny of Lenox.

Ruth Alma Matheny was born Sept. 15, 1875 in Indiana. She was the daughter of James and Isabelle Alkire Reeves. Mrs. Matheny was 100 years and five months of

age at the time of her death.

When she was 14 months old her parents moved to Iowa, and lived in New Market. They then moved to Bedford where she attended school. Shortly after her family moved

to Platteville, she was married to Josiah Harrison Matheny Dec. 17, 1891 at the home of her parents.

To this union six sons and three daughters were born. After her husband died June 6, 1951, she lived with her son, Joe, on a farm northwest of Blockton. They moved to the

town of Blockton in 1955 where they lived until two years ago when they went to Clearfield to reside at Clearview Nursing Home.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Josiah, and seven children. They were Joseph, Wilbur, James, Paul, Ruby, Amy and John. Four grandchildren also preceded her in

death. Surviving are her son, Claude and his wife Crystal of Lenox and a daughter, Mrs. Mary Straight of Clearfield, two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Hazel Miller of Mount Ayr

and Mrs. Mattie Million of Bedford; a son-on-law; Alfred Stewart of Blockton and a sister, Amy Mulnix of South Gate, California.

Other survivors include 41 grandchildren, 121 great grandchildren and 80 great, great grandchildren.

She joined the Platteville Methodist Church as a youth and later transferred her membership to the Blockton Church where she was active as long as health permitted

her to attend.

One of her greatest thrills was when her family and friends joined her for the observance of her 100th birthday anniversary on Sept. 15, 1975 at the Clearfield Lions building.

She was happiest when she was visiting with her own family and her many friends. She always thought first of others and was willing to lend them a helping hand.

The many who affectionately called her "Grandmother Matheny" will greatly miss her.

McIntyre, James -

James Mclntyre, 75, died at the Perris Valley Hospital near Riverside, California on March 13, 1976 of a heart attack.

Services were held at The Garden of Prayer Chapel at Riverside on March 16th and his ashes are interned at the Lenox Fairview cemetery.

Mr. Mclntyre was born in Scotland March 27, 1900, the eldest of three children, and came to America in 1924, He lived many years in California

and since 1967 has resided in Lenox, Iowa. On December 22, 1955 he was married to Leah Eberle. He and Mrs. Mclntyre were visiting in California at

the time of his death.

He leaves to mourn his death, his wife, Leah; a brother, nephew and niece in Scotland; two sisters-in-law, Georgia Eberle of Lenox, Ia.,  Mrs. Art Gosch of Wall Lake,

Iowa, and a host of friends in California and Iowa.

Riggle, Glenn Wilbur -

Glenn Riggle, 78, a former resident of the Lenox and Sharpsburg areas, died Monday, March 8th at Eppley Care Center in Omaha.

Mr. Riggle is survived by a son, Neil Riggle and a daughter, Marie Medders both of Omaha, Nebr., three sisters, Mrs. Arnold (Dollie) Showalter of Creston, Mrs. Geo.

(Viola) Jones of Lenox, Mrs. Mabel Ridenour of Vermillion, South Dakota, 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Mr. Riggle moved to Omaha about 12 years ago. Prior to that time he had lived most of his life in the Lenox and Sharpsburg areas.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. from the Larkin Funeral Home in Corning with Rev. Floyd Newbrough, pastor of the Lenox United Methodist Church officiating.

Burial was in Walnut Grove cemetery at Corning.

Riggle, Glenn Wilbur -

Glenn Wilbur Riggle was bom April 30, 1897, in Adams County, Iowa, to Albert and Charlotte Allen Riggle, and passed away March 8, 1976 at the Eppley Care Center in

Omaha, Nebraska at the age 78 years, 10 months and 8 days.

He lived around Lenox and the Coming area most of his life except the last 12 years when he moved to Omaha to be near his children because of failing health. He lived on

a farm here close to Mr. and Mrs. Ray Madders where they helped watch over him.

On July \, 1929, he was married to Irena Murphy at her parent's home near Prescott. To this union were born 2 children, Neil Riggle and Marie Riggle Medders. He was

a farmer all of his life and joined the Methodist Church in Lenox as a young man.

He is survived by his son and daughter, also a daughter-in-law Dorothy and son-in-law Paul Medders and 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandsons; 3 sisters, Mrs. Mabel

Ridenour of Vermillion, S.D., Mrs. Arnold (Dollie) Schowalter of Creston. Mrs. George (Viola) Jones of Lenox, Iowa, several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death his wife Irena, 2 sisters, Mrs. Earl (Edith) Murren of Clarinda and Catherine Edna, dying in infancy.

He was a member of Co. K, 34th Infantry of the National Guard at Corning, Iowa, for many years.

He was a quiet and patient sufferer. His most joy was when he could be near family and friends.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, March 10th at 1 o'clock from the Larkin-Roland Funeral Home in Corning. Rev. Floyd Newbrough, pastor of the United

Methodist Church in Lenox, officiated.

Music was furnished by Donna Peckham, organist and John Riggle, vocalist.

Casket bearers were Raymond Brown, Jim Morris, Dick Rainfoth, Cleo Murren, Clifford Murren and Larry Murren.

Interment was in Walnut Grove cemetery.

Veatch, Florence Lutishe Dawes -

Florence Lutishe Veatch, of Prescott, Iowa, died April 2, 1976 at the Rosary hospital in Corning.

She was born July 31, 1890, the daughter of John Bailey Dawes and Arda Jane Johnson at Clearmont, Mo. She was 85 at the time of her death.

Mrs. Veatch was united in marriage to Charles A. Veatch at Maryville, Mo., Aug. 21, 1907.  Her husband preceded her in death March 17, 1964.

Survivors include 2 daughters, Mrs. Gunnar (Viola) Sandstrom of Lenox, Iowa and Mrs. LaVern (Arda) Brown of Tempe, Arizona; 1 daughter-in-law, Wilma Gaidies, Creston,

Iowa; four sons, Glen Veatch of Fontanelle, Iowa, Walter Veatch of Prescott, Eugene Veatch of Lamar, Colo., and Howard Veatch of Creston; Iowa. Eighteen grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren also survive.

She had lived in the Creston, Orient, Cromwell and Lenox communities since moving from Missouri in 1914. She spent most of her life as a homemaker.

Funeral services were held from the Keating-Lindsay Funeral Home Tuesday, April 6, at 1:30 p.m., with Rev. Don Briley officiating.

Music was furnished by Mrs. Jean Boyd, organist and Mrs. Donna Veatch, soloist.

Pallbearers were Louis Davidson, Albert Sandstrom, Haldean, Harold, Johnny and Marlin Veatch.

Interment was in the Graceland cemetery at Creston.

Florence Lutishe Vcatch, daughter of John Bailey Dawes .and Arda Jane Bell (Johnson) Dawes, was born on July 31, 1890 in Nodaway County, Mo., and passed away April 2, 1976 at the Rosary hospital in Corning, Iowa, at the age of 85 years, 8 months 2 days.

On August 21, 1907, she was married to Charles Arthur Veatch at Maryville, Mo. To this marriage six sons and two  daughters were born. They were engaged in farming near

Hopkins, Mo. until 1915 when they moved to Iowa. They lived in the vicinities of Orient, Cromwell, Creston, Kent and  Lenox before retiring in 1946 on an acreage in Lenox.

In 1967, three years after the death of her husband, she moved to Prescott, Iowa where ;she made her home. Then in April of 1935 due to ill health, she went to live with her son

Walter and family. There she remained until death.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Charles, one half brother, Oda S. Crawford, two sons Estle McKinder and Marion Arthur, one grandson, Rodney Brown

and one great granddaughter, Rosanne Sandstrom.

Survivors are her four sons, Olen of Fontanelle, Howard of Creston, Eugene of Lamar, Colorado and Walter of Prescott, and two daughters, Mrs. Gunnar Viola Sandstrmn of

Lenox and Mrs. LaVern (Arda) Brown (twin sister of Marion) of Tempe, Arizona, 18 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren as well as other relatives and friends.

She had a special interest in her garden and flowers. She did lots of handwork and seldom missed a day of quilting at the church as long as her health permitted.

Her family was her pride and joy. She enjoyed sports, especially basketball and attended many of the games until she could no longer get around.

Her family as well as her friends cherish many fond memories.

Funeral .services were held Tuesday, April 6, 1976 at 1:30 p.m. at the Keating-Lindsay Funeral Home in Creston, Ia.  Rev. Briley of the Prescott United Church of Prescott, Ia.,

officiated. Music was by Mrs. Clair Boyd, organist, Mrs. Hal Veatch of Kent sang "Will There Be Any Stars In My Crown" and '"God Be With You Till We Meet Again."

Pall hearers were Harold Veatch, Hal Veatch, Marlin Veatch, Johnny Veatch,  Robert Sandstrom and Louis Davidson.

Interment was in Graceland Cemetery in Creston, Iowa.

Wyant, Hugh B -

Hugh Wyant, 81, died at his home in Lenox Monday, March 15th after a lengthy illness.

Hugh B. Wyant, the oldest son of James U. and Margaret Long Wyant, was born on Aug. 20, 1894 near Clearfield, Iowa and died at the age of 81 years, 6 months and 25 days.

He was married to Glenna Wood on Feb. 24, 1915, and to this union was born one daughter, Juanita Wyant Walter.

He was a farmer until he retired in Lenox in 1959. He joined the church when quite young, serving as an ordained elder in the United Presbyterian Church in Clearfield and Lenox.

He was preceded in death by  his parents; one brother, Orville, and a sister, Helen.

He is survived by his wife, Glenna; daughter, Juanita and her husband Glenndon Walter of Prescott, Iowa; two grandchildren, Mervin Walter and his wife Nancy of Prescott and Corene Boltinghouse and her husband Reldon of Rockwell City, Iowa, six great grandchildren, Cindy, Michael and Mark Walter; and Holly, Royce and Nicki Boltinghouse; one sister, Ruth Graham of Zenia, Ohio and a brother G.A. Wyant of Hement, California, nieces and nephews and many friends.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, March 17th at 2:3.0 o'clock from the United Presbyterian. Church, with Rev. Bill Watson and Rev Elmer West officiating.

Music was furnished by Roberta Lockhart, organist.

Casket bearers were Francis Routh, Marvin Routh, Wayne McFee, Kenneth McFee, Carl Cordell and Roy Welch.

Interment was in West Fairview Cemetery.
