Benson, Robert G -

Ronald G. Benson, 72, formerly of Lenox, died at his home in Long Beach, California Jan. 12th. Burial was there.

Survivors include his wife, Bessie, three sons and one daughter, 11 grandchildren, a half brother, Daryl Benson of Albuquerque, N. M., and a half sister, Darleen (Mrs. Tom)

Lininger of Diagonal. Mrs. Lininger attended the service.

Mr. Benson was a nephew of the late Mrs. Ellsworth Wright of Lenox.

Bloom, Nellie -

Mrs. Earl (Nellie) Bloom, Sr., 80, of 704 East Iowa Street in Greenfield, died February 4th at the Creston, Iowa hospital following an illness of several months.

Interment was at Witt cemetery near Bridgewater, Iowa on Feb. 7th.

Earl Bloom, Sr., .and Miss Doris Marleta will continue living at the Greenfield residence.

Davidson, Craig L -

Craig L. Davidson, 73, of Pasadena, California, died Feb. 23rd in that city. Born and raised in Lenox Mr. Davidson was a graduate of the Lenox schools with the class of

1914. He was one of five brothers.

Survivors include a brother, Virgil, founder of the Virg Davidson Cuddahoff Co., in Culver City.

Funeral services were held in Pasadena with burial in Forest Lawn cemetery.

Mr. and Mrs. Rolland Walter, who were on the west coast at the time, attended the services.

Dennis, George -

George Dennis, 60, died Wednesday afternoon, March 15th at Clarinda. Mr. Dennis grew up in the Lenox area and graduated from Lenox high school. He lived near here until 1962.

He is survived by his widow, Mona, and a daughter, Mrs. James (Vickie) Book of Red Oak.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.<m. Friday at the Trinity United Presbyterian church in Clarinda. Burial with Masonic rites were held in the Lenox cemetery later in the day.

George, W Ray -

W. Ray George, 83, died Saturday, February 26th at Santa Ana, Calif. He was a former Lenox resident, having left here in 1922.

He was married to Helen Tyler, a sister of Don Tyler, and his father, W. W. George and brother, Jesse George at one time owned the Farmers and Merchants Bank in Lenox.

Survivors include his wife, Helen, daughter Marcia, both of California, and son Hal of New York City.

Funeral services were held February 29th with burial in Santa Ana.

Gillette, George Mars -

George Gillette, 74, a resident of Sharpsburg, died about noon Sunday at the Rosary hospital in Corning, Mr. Gillette had been in failing health for some time and had been hospitalized over two weeks.

Mr. Gillette was born in New Market. He had been a farmer as a young man but had been a blacksmith at Sharpsburg since 1925.

He is survived by his widow, Retta, a daughter, Mrs. Martin Taylor of Muscatine, and two sons, Ivan and Dean, both of Davenport. One daughter, Mrs. Lois Ferris, preceded him in

death.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Sharpsburg Methodist Church with Rev. Ron Kinzler officiating.

Burial was in the Gravity cemetery.

Gillette, George Mars -

Funeral services for George M Gillette, 74, of Sharpsburg held February 29th at the Sharpsburg United Methodist Church were conducted by Rev. Ronald Kinzler.  Mr. Gillette died February 27. 1972 at Rosary Hospital in Corning. Masonic rites were conducted by Tremont Lodge No. 343. A.F. and A.M. with interment at Washington Cemetery, Gravity.

George Mars Gillette was born Oct. 16, 1897. He was born in a sod house near Hawleyville, Iowa, in Page county, the son of Henry and Addie Gillette. He spent most of his life in Taylor County.

He was united in marriage to Ada Loretta Cree, Sept. 9, 1917. To this union were born four children., Mrs. Martin (Darlene) Taylor of Muscatine, two sons, Ivan and Dean of Davenport, Iowa and Mrs. Lois Ferris (deceased)

George was a blacksmith in Sharpsburg from 1925 to 1955 when he was forced to give it  up because of his health. He was a member of the Methodist Church in Sharpsburg

and attended while he was able. He was a past master of the Right Angle Lodge, No. 348, of Conway and transferred to the Tremont Lodge No. 343 at Lenox.

Survivors include his wife, Retta of Sharpsburg, two sons, Ivan and Dean, a daughter, Darlene, a brother, Glenn, two sisters, Gladys Griffith and Alleen Longfellow, all of Bedford,

18 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were a daughter Lois Ferris, his parents, and two brothers, John and Vern.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Guidinger, George W -

George W. Guidinger, 71, husband of Lula Cheese Guidinger, died at his home in Galesburg, Illinois January 24th.

Services were held there Jan. 27th. Graveside services were held in Lenox Jan. 29, 1972, conducted by Rev. Wallace Nelson.

Survivors include his wife. Leila, a daughter, Sarah Guidinger of Fullerton, Calif., son George of Galesburg, Ill., and daughter-in-law Ann, two brothers, Nick of Lincoln, Nebr.,

and Harry of Polk, Nebr., and one sister, Lydia Sterner of York, Neb.

Hayes, Raymond -

Raymond Hayes, 71, son of Dan Hayes, died January 7th, 1972 at the Mercy hospital in Des Moines.

Mr. Hayes was born southeast of Lenox and attended Platte Center school and Lenox high school.

He is survived by his wife, a daughter and son and a brother, William of Des Moines.

Cousins in Lenox are Verna Phillips, Gertrude Beatty and Frank Carruthers.

Funeral services were held in Des Moines from St. Ambrose Cathedral Jan. 11th with burial in Resthaven Cemetery.

Lovitt, Etta -

Word was received here of the death of Mrs. Vint (Etta) Lovitt, 95, of Corvallis, Oregon.

Mrs. Levitt died January 13th and services were held Saturday, January 15th.

She is a sister-in-law of Mrs. Flo Grimm and Mrs. John Drain of this community.

Manley, Robert Allen -

Funeral services for Robert Allen Manley, 29, of Corning, were held Sunday afternoon at the Holland Funeral home there, Joe Cook officiating, with burial in Oak Hill cemetery south of Corning.

Surviving are his widow, the former Connie Walton, whom he married Jan. 8, 1972, a stepdaughter, Luann Wilson, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Orie Manley, all of Corning, also

two sisters, Bernice Manley of Corning, and Mrs. Don Webb, Creston, and a stepbrother, James Corliss.

The Orie Manley family lived in Lenox at two different times, leaving here about six years ago.

Mr. Manley died of cartoon monoxide poisoning Thursday night. His body was found in his car, parked on a rural road near Corning, by a friend, Jim Houck, who was on his way to

feed his livestock at a nearby farm. Adams county officials had been conducting a search that evening after it was reported he was missing from home. No reason is known for

his taking his own life.

A hose from the automobile's exhaust pipe had been extended into the car.

Orth, Emma Margaret Schaffer -

Mrs. Emma Orth, 87, lifelong resident of Lenox, died Saturday, Feb. 12th at the Lenox Nursing Home.

Emma Margaret Schaffer was born April 2, 1884 at Prescott, Iowa, the oldest daughter of William and Elizabeth Schaffer and died February 12, 1972.

She spent her entire life in and near the Lenox and Prescott areas.

On November 26, 1903, she was united in marriage to Chris Orth. To this union were born three sons, Russell, Harold and Marvin.

She was a member of Calvary Methodist Church and when she moved to Lenox she joined the Lenox Methodist Church, where she remained active until her death. She was a member of the Women's Society and enjoyed using her telephone to help in the work of the society. Mrs. Orth was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her husband in February of 1923, also son Russell, one grandson Max, and two great grandchildren, Vincent O'Rourke and Karmel O'Rourke, her

father and mother, brothers, William, Jesse and Carl and sisters, Ella (Mrs. Roy Moore) and Kathryn (Mrs. William Miller).

She leaves to mourn her passing sons Harold of Clermont, Iowa and Marvin of South Bend, Indiana, 12 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren, a sister Margaret (Mrs. Everett

Williams) of Corning, nieces and nephews and many friends.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 pm from the United Methodist Church in Lenox with Rev Floyd Newbrough, pastor, officiating.

Music was furnished by Billie Jean Barker, Maralyn Beck and Norma Paymal.

Bearers were Leo, Jack, Larry, Veldon and Richard Orth and John O'Rourke.

Burial was in Fairview cemetery.

Pearson, Huldah Toland Matzen -

Huldah Pearson, 93, died at the Lenox Nursing Home Thursday, April 6th, 1972.

Huldah Toland Pearson, second child of Riley and Josephine Toland was born Feb. 12, 1879 in Illinois and passed away April 6th, 1972 at the age of 93 years.

On July 1, 1900, she was married to Fred Matzen. To this union were born two daughters, Mrs. Roy (Florence) Heaps of Corning and Mrs. Randall (Ethel) Haynes of Lenox. Her

husband, Fred, passed away on July 13, 1925. Several years later she was married to J. C. Pearson who also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Pearson became a member of the Presbyterian Church early in life and later transferred to the Lenox United Methodist Church and also the Women's Society of Christian

Service. She was a faithful Christian in all her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and seven brothers. A granddaughter and great-grandson and a stepson also died earlier.

She is survived by her two daughters, Florence and Ethel, a stepdaughter, Mrs. George (Pearl) Dowell of Liberty, Mo., 5 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Clark (Ruth.) Moore, 3 sisters-in-law, Mrs. Gertrude Beatty and Mrs. Bertha Toland of Lenox and Mrs. Mildred Farris of Carson, Iowa, several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Funeral services were conducted from the Bender Funeral Home Saturday, April 8th at 2 pm, with Rev. Floyd Newbrough, officiating.

Bearers were Bill Dowell, Frank Bladon, Floyd Sparks, Edward Moore, Clark Moore, Jr., and Kenneth Bolinger.

Burial was in Fairview cemetery.

Strait, Mildred Morris -

Mrs. Mildred Strait, 64, of 230 Brady St., Davenport, died Friday in Davenport Osteopathic hospital after a brief illness. She was a former Lenox resident, having attended

school here and for a time was a telephone operator.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8th in the Runge Chapel. Burial was in Davenport Memorial Park.

Mildred Morris was born in Yorktown, Iowa. She married Donald Strait in 1927 in Corning, Iowa. He died in 1967.

Mrs. Strait was an active volunteer in the American Red Cross.

She is survived by daughters, Miss Jeraldine Strait, Mrs. Albert Stegen and Mrs. John E. Miller all of Davenport, sons, Donavon and Gerald, both of Davenport, two grandsons, one

great grandson, sisters, Mrs Bertha Stapleton, Burlington, Iowa, Mrs Kenneth Countryman of Douds, Iowa and Mrs Keith Schrader, Des Moines and a brother, David Morris of Des Moines.

Trost, George H -

George H. Trost, 64, died Monday afternoon at Greater Community hospital in Creston. He had been admitted to the hospital Sunday but had been ill for two or three years and had

been in and out of the hospital several times during his illness.

He was a farmer and has always lived in the Lenox area.

Mr. Trost is survived by his widow, Helen, a daughter, Mrs. Bill Reed, Lenox, a son, Lt. Col. Jack Trost, stationed at the Victorville air force base, Calif., seven grandchildren, a brother, Joe Trost, Lenox, and five sisters, Mary Cook and Frieda Boltinghouse both of Lenox, Pauline Morgan and Emma Woods, West Salem, Wis., and Rose Noerrlinger, Sheldon, Wis.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Presbyterian Church in Sharpsburg. Rev. Wallace Nelson will officiate.

Burial will be in the Lenox cemetery.

Trost, George H -

George Trost, 64, died Monday, Jan. 24th at the Greater Community Hospital in Creston, Iowa, following an extended illness.

George H. Trost, son of John and Margaretta Trost, was born near Lenox on May 9, 1907, and lived all of his life in the Lenox and Sharpsburg communities.

On Jan. 12, 1928, he was married to Helen Pinney of Sharpsburg, Iowa, and to this union were born two children, Lt. Col. Jack Trost of Apple Valley, California, and Janet Reed of

Lenox, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Harry, and an infant sister, Anna.

George was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Sharpsburg, Iowa, and also a member of Tremont Lodge No. 343 of Lenox, Iowa.

Besides his wife and two children, he is survived by one brother, Joe Trost of Lenox and five sisters, Mary Cook and Freida Boltinghouse of Lenox, Pauline Morgan and Emma

Wood of West Salem, Wisc., and Rose Noerrlinger of Sheldon, Wisc. He is also survived by one daughter-in-law. Jean Trost of Apple Valley, Calif., one son-in-law, Bill Reed of

Lenox, and seven grandchildren, Shelley, Jaclyn and Randy Trost and Jerry, Mark, Doug and Gina Reed. Also mourning his passing are fifteen nieces and nephews.

Mr. Trost was a kind and loving husband and father and will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

Funeral services were conducted from the Presbyterian Church in Sharpsburg, Iowa, Thursday, Jan. 27th at 2 p.m., with Rev. Wallace Nelson officiating.

Music was furnished by Mrs Jack Cribbs and Mrs. Richard Wilson.

Bearers were Raymond Trost, Donald Trost, Gene Trost, Geo. Cook, Harold Morgan and Wayne O'Riley.

Burial was in Fairview cemetery in Lenox.

Walter, Jessie L Wray -

Jessie L. Walter, 90, longtime resident of this area, died Wednesday, January 12th at Corning, Iowa.

Jessie L. Wray Walter, daughter of Mankin and Nancy Wray, was born February 4, 1881, in Grant Township, Adams County, and departed this life at the Rosary Hospital in Corning,

January 12, 1972, at the age of 90 years, eleven months and eight days.

She was united in marriage to Henry O. Walter on February 23, 1899. To this union four children were born.

She lived in Mercer Township, Adams County, until 1951 when she moved to Lenox. She was a dedicated Christian and had been a member of the Salem Church of the Brethren

since a young woman. Her church, her family and her flowers were the central theme of her life.

Surviving are three children, Wray L. Walter of Lenox, Dale Walter of Prescott and Mrs. Ruth Hettinger of Lenox, two daughters-in-law, and one son-in-law, five grandchildren and

seven great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1949, a son Lewis in 1919, a sister, Anna Hamilton and a brother, Charles Wray.

Funeral services were held Saturday, January 15, 1972 at 2:30 pm in the Salem Church of the Brethren with Rev. John Wagner officiating.

Music was furnished by Rev. Gerald and Ronald Rogers, accompanied by Mrs. Carolyn Herman.

Paid bearers were Dick Gray, Mike Cheese, Lowell Hamilton, Glenndon Walter, Lester West and Leo Wray.

Interment was in the Salem cemetery.
