Basketville, R W (Dick) -

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Sept. 3rd at the United Church of Christ at Fonda, for B. W. "Dick" Baskerville, 77. A long-time farmer of the Jolley area, Mr. Baskerville died on Thursday, August 31st at Stewart Memorial Hospital in Lake City following a brief lioness.

He was the father of Mrs. Win Tyler of Lenox.

Rev. William Imes, pastor of the United Church of Christ, Fonda, officiated with burial following in Cedar cemetery.

Pallbearers were Terry Saucke, Greg Baskerville, Roger Baskerville, Merlyn Hendrickson, Robert Untiedt and David Scott; Honorary pallbearers were Walter Siege, William Ousaek, Jas. Murphy, Wm. Neavin, Linn McConkey, Fred Hersom and Walter Lott.

The son of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Baskerville, Dick Baskerville was born April 17, 1895 in Wilmington, Illinois. He moved with his parents to his present farm home near Jolley in 1901

and completed his education in Calhoun County schools. He was married to Thelma Heflin in 1922 at Rockwell City and they had farmed in the area since then.

Mr. Baskerville had served 48 years as director of the First National Bank in Fonda, having served longer than any of the present members. He also served as a Trustee of Williams

Township for over thirty years. He was a member of the United Church of Christ of Fonda and a director of the Jolley Cooperative Grain Co.

Surviving are the widow: 3 daughters, Mrs. Marvin Krohn of Lakefield,  Minn., Mrs. Ruth Ann Saucke, Fort Dodge and Mrs. Winston Tyler, Lenox, and 2 sons, Irvin and Richard, both

of Jolley. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister and a grandchild in infancy.

His home and family were always his first concern.

Bennison, William R -

William R. Bennison, 82, longtime resident of the Lenox area, died Monday, Oct. 16th at the Greater Community hospital in Creston after an extended illness.

Survivors include one son, Robert and wife Esther along with two grandchildren of DeKalb, Illinois, a sister Berta of Lenox, and a host of friends.

His wife, Mae, died in 1964.

Funeral services are scheduled for today (Thursday) at the United Presbyterian church in Lenox at 1:30 with Rev. Wallace Nelson officiating. The body will lie in state from 1 to 2

o'clock at the church.

Burial will be in the Lenox cemetery.

Bryant, Cora Gertrude Voice -

Mrs. Cora Gertrude Bryant, 85, a former resident of Lenox, died at Sanger Convalescent hospital Friday, Oct. 6th following a period of failing health.

In recent years she and her husband made their home at 374 N. Fulton St., Fresno, after having lived in Sanger, California for many years.

The daughter of the late Issac and Miranda Voice, Mrs. Bryant was born at Steamboat Springs, Colo., on Nov. 18, 1886. She moved to the California area in 1903. She married William L. Bryant, who survives her on April 3, 1907 at Sanger.

Mr. and Mrs. Bryant returned to Bryant's former home in Iowa in 1913 and lived there until 1935 when they moved back to California. They marked their 65th wedding anniversary

earlier this year.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Oct. 9th at Fresno with interment following at Sanger cemetery.

Mrs. Phillip (Jesnne) Bush, 33, of Huntington Beach, California, died in a hospital there Saturday. The funeral was Monday morning, Oct. 2nd at the Garden Grove Community

Church, Garden Grove, California with interment in the Huntington Beach cemetery.

She leaves her husband, Phillip, three children, Michael, 9, Steven 6 and Linda 3, her father and his wife, Judge and Mrs. James E. Hughes, 3 sisters, Mrs. Mike Azinger of Ft. Madison, Mrs. Garland Walter of Lenox, Mrs. David Tripp of Kent, two grandmothers, Mrs. Frank Maharry and Mrs. Jay Hughes both of Lenox.

She was the daughter of James and Genevieve Maharry Hughes and was born in Detroit, Michigan April 19, 1939. She moved to Lenox with her family as a child, graduated

from the Lenox high school and the University of Iowa, serving an internship as a dietician in California. She was assistant dietician in the hospital at Santa Aim, California before her marriage to Phillip Bush at the Presbyterian Church in Lenox on July 22, 1962.

She has been critically ill since about the first of May this year. A memorial has been planned to help in cancer research. Friends may send contributions to Phillip Bush, 20442 Craimer Lane, Huntington Beach, Ca. 92646.

Mr. and Mrs. James Hughes and Mr. and Mrs. Mike Azinger left Sunday to be present at the funeral.

Carlson, Orril M Gallop -

Arnold A. Cartoon, 67, died Thursday, morning at his home three miles west of Kent after suffering a heart attack. Orril M. Carlson, 68, his wife, died Sunday morning at Greater

Community hospital where she had been a patient since Sept. 14tlh. She had been in ill health for some time.

Mr. Carlson was born in Page County Dec. 12, 1904, the son of Otto and Anna Carlson. He was married to Orril Gallop July 15, 1922, in Kansas, Mrs Carlson was born Oct.

10, 1903 at Morton Mils, Iowa and was the daughter of George and Addie Gallop.

Surviving the couple are 3 sons, Charles. L. Carlson at home, Donald E. Carlson of Papillion, Nebr., and Stanley A. Carlson of Lenox.

Mr. Carlson is also survived by three sisters, Mrs. Walter Pearson and Mrs. Lester Bergren of Stanton and Mrs. Lloyd Brown of Shenandoah and two brothers, Harold Carlson of

Portland, Oregon and Wayne Carlson of Whiting.

Mrs. Carlson is also survived by three brothers, Carlton Gallop of Payola, Kan., Malcolm and Marion of Klamath Falls, Oregon.

Funeral services were held  Monday afternoon at 1:30 at the Roland funeral home in Corning with Rev. Paul Williams officiating.

Pallbearers for the double service were Homer Minnick, Robert Spangler, Willard Peterson, Dean Schaffer, Harold Christensen and William Morse.

Music was provided by Norma Paymal at the organ with Mrs. Lonnie Barker and Mrs. James Beck, vocalists.

Burial was in the Stringtown cemetery.

Darst, Dallas Edward -

Dallas Edward Darst, son of Solomon and Alice Darst, was born March 25, 1892 at Sidney, Iowa and passed away August 20, 1972 at the Nursing Home in Lenox at the age of 80 years, 4 months and 26 days. He had been in failing health for several years.

He had lived in the Clearfield area for over 30 years.

He was united in marriage to Etta Hawley March 14, 1920. To this union was born one son, James.

He is survived by his widow, Etta, son James, daughter-in-law, Hilda, granddaughter, JoAnn, her husband Don and great granddaughter, Misty Rogers.

He also leaves a brother, Rex Darst of Sidney, Iowa, his wife Estyse and a sister, Chloe Bickel and a sister-in-law, Berdina Hawley, both of Omaha, Nebr, and Alberta Darst, sister-in-law of Clarkson, Washington, a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Charley Darst of Asatin, Wash., and a sister, Mittie Miller of Sacramento, Calif. A brother, Arthur was taken at the age of six.

He was a veteran of World War I and a member of the Legion at Clearfield.

Final rites were held August 23 at the Varner Funeral Home in Clearfield, conducted by Ed Akes of Bedford. Piano music was played by Mrs. Nioma Gaule.

Casket (bearers were Paul England, Raymond Straight, Paul Brown, Vernie Horton, Cecil Cordell and John Duey.

Burial was in the Clearfield cemetery.

Dixon, Esther Norris Wallace -

Mrs. Claude (Esther) Dixon, 74, prominent Lenox woman, died Friday afternoon, October 6th at the Clearview Nursing Home in Mount Ayr. She had been at the home since May,

1968 after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage in February of that year.

Esther Norris, daughter of Samuel T. and Sarah Scott Wallace was born at Benton, Iowa, February 10, 1898 and departed this life October 6, 1972 at the Clearview Home in Mount

Ayr at the age of 74 years.

She taught public school music for several years and until her illness taught private piano pupils. Her piano pupils numbered in the hundreds.

On December 30, 1930, she was united in marriage with Claude E. Dixon at Mount Ayr and the home was established in Lenox.

Mrs. Dixon was serving as national president of the National League of American Pen Women, Inc., when she became ill in 1968. Frequently she won awards for news writing, radio

and television reporting and other features as she was active as a writer for newspapers.

Mrs. Dixon, a noted writer and musician, was a past president of Iowa Press Women and a former editor of their publication and of the Iowa Chapter of the National Society of

Arts and Letters. She had published a book of poems, "The Cross Roads" which includes one "My Task" that was selected for publication in International Bouquet De Poems, in

Rome, Italy.

Proceeds from Mrs. Dixon's composition, "The Iowa Poppy Song" were donated to buy a piano for the occupational therapy department at the state hospital in Clarinda. For 15

years she had been chairman of the program, of the Iowa Federation of Music Clubs in providing opportunities for young musicians to perform at the Iowa State Fair.

Her many activities included directing a church choir in Lenox for 25 years, training girls trio and quartet, first place winners in the national contest of the American Legion Auxiliary, directing the Auxiliary State Chorus, directing the music at Hawkeye Girls State. She was also a past president of the Iowa Federation of Music Clubs.

Mrs. Dixon was born at Benton, where she lived until after graduating from high school. She enrolled at Simpson college in Indianola,. where she graduated in music. She was honored in 1965 by Simpson college when they presented her with the Alumni Achievement Award.

Her writing ability made a contribution to literature used by the Iowa P.E.O. Sisterhood.

She was a past president of Chapter FW, Lenox and had been a delegate to Supreme Convention when it was held in Vancouver, B. C. She also was actively interested in the

Order of the Eastern Star.

During the recent Centennial a special tribute was paid to Mrs. Dixon, recalling the many accomplishments, events and reasons that caused the community that was her home to

present a special "Humanitarian Award" in the form of a plaque to her husband, Claude and his two nieces, Mrs. Harold Taylor of Diagonal and Mrs. Jack Elliott of Mount Ayr on

her behalf.

Survivors include her husband, Claude, one sister, Mrs. John F. Denhart of Mount Ayr, and her twin brother, Chester Wallace of Mount Ayr.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday afternoon from the United Presbyterian church in Lenox with Rev. Wallace Nelson, pastor of the church and Rev. Jarrold Swinton officiating.

Music was furnished by Mrs  Margaret Whipp and Robert Lockhart.

Bearers were Don Tyler, Ray Cheese, Lonnie Barker, Dr W J Kopp, Herman Haering and George Reynolds.

Burial was in North Fairview Cemetery.

Filbert, Lona Eva -

Lona Eva Filbert, who was born near Sharpsburg in 1884, died in Doctor's Nursing Home in Dallas, Texas, August 31st, 1972, at the age of 89 years.

She grew up in the Sharpsburg vicinity and lived there all her life until a year and a half ago.

She was united in marriage in 1900 to John Filbert. She was preceded in death by her husband and two daughters, Grace Leighton and Della Roy. She

is survived by three children, Mrs. Eva Evans of Glenwood, Iowa, Mrs. Mildred Lucken of Hollywood, Calif., and Johnny Filbert of Dallas, Texas. There

are 14 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Funeral services were held from the Bender Funeral Home at 2 pm. September 4th with Rev. Wallace Nelson, pastor of the United Presbyterian Church officiated.

Music was furnished by Mrs Bessie Underwood and Rowe Eighmy.

Bearers were Gerald Boydston, Carl Sundell, Chet Shimer, Leonard Knott, David Miller and Weldon Mains.

Gill, Harold A (Pete) -

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 10th at the Roland Funeral Home in Corning for Harold A. (Pete) Gill, who died October 7th.

Harold A. (Pete) Gill, son of Robert A. Gill and Cora Schafroth Gill was born on a farm in Taylor County November 28, 1900 and passed away at his home in Grove Township, Taylor

County, Iowa, on Oct. 7th, 1972, at the age of 71 years, 10 months and 9 days.

He was united in marriage to Doris Rose Grey on December 27, 1921 at her parent's home near Iveyvllle. To this union three children were born: Robert A. who died at the age of

7 years; a daughter Peggy Jean and a son, Donald Wayne. They made their home on the farm near Iveyville, later moving to a farm near Lenox, Iowa in 1929.

They moved to Silverton, Colorado for a few years, then back to their farm. His wife Doris passed away April 27, 1963. He was also preceded in death by his parents, a sister Pearl Brown and a grandson, Dave Gill.

On April 8, 1964 he was united in marriage to Helen Aiken Leonard at Nebraska City, Nebraska and they made their home on the farm near Lenox.

He was a member of the Modern Woodmen and the Masonic Lodge.

He is survived by his wife Helen, son Donald and wife Evelynn of Roy, Utah, daughter Peggy and husband Earnest Blake of Denver, Colorado, several grandchildren and two

great grandchildren, one brother, Clifford and wife of Brooks, Iowa, several nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.

Harold was a good neighbor, a loyal friend and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Joe Cook served as clergyman at the services with music by Norma Paymal, organist, Mrs. James Beck and Mrs. Lonnie Barker, vocalists.

Bearers were William Paul, Glen Williams, Melvin Williams, John Cade, Raymond Brown and Donald Tully.

Those in charge of flowers were Margaret Williams, Agnes Paul and Bertha Williams.

Burial was in Prairie Rose cemetery at Corning, Iowa.

Holben, Elsie Grace Clayton -

Mrs. Elsie Holben, 81, died Monday, Sept. 25th at the Lenox Nursing Home where she had been a resident for about a month.

Elsie Grace Holben was born on a farm east of Lenox on May 6, 1891, the youngest of four children of Berry and Emma Clayton. Three brothers, Harry, George and Roy preceded her in death as well as her parents.

She was 81 years, 4 months and 19 days of age at the time of her passing.

On March 28, 1917, she was married to Herman Holben who passed away in June, 1936. One son, Eugene was born to them.

He survives along with his wife Betty, and three grandchildren, Jeanne of Lenox, Janet of Omaha, Nebr., and David of Des Moines. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

She has been a member of the United Methodist Church for over 63 years and was a member of the Women's Society. She was a charter member of the G.V.C. club and has been

in business in Lenox for over 54 years as owner of the Lenox Theater.

Funeral services were held at the Bender Funeral Home in Lenox Wednesday afternoon at 2 pm with Rev. Floyd Newbrough officiating.

Bearers were Ray Cheese, Leo Miller, Ernie Campbell, Kenneth Black, Leland Hegwood, Robert Reynolds.

Burial was in Fairview cemetery.

Mrs. Mable Smith Kerns died September 6th, 1972 on her 84th birthday the El Dorado Rest Home in Trenton, Nebr.

Services were conducted by Rev. Lowell Jones at the Memorial United Methodist church in McCook, Nebraska, Saturday morning, September 9th with burial at the Memorial Park

cemetery in McCook.

She was the daughter of William and Mary Francis (Aunt Polly) Smith and formerly of Sharpsburg.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Harvey T. Kerns in 1961, three brothers, Guy, Ray and Earl.

She leaves to mourn her loss a sister-in-law, Mrs. Earl W. Smith of Sherman Oaks, Calif., a nephew, Jim Kerns and wife Kay of Charlotte, North Carolina, several Smith nieces and nephews, and cousins. Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Smith of Palisade, Nebraska looked after her for several years.

Attending the services from away were Mrs. June Shields of Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. Irla Saterstad, Maderia, Calif., Mr. and Mrs. Wyatt Smith and a daughter of Montrose, Colorado, Mrs. Leo Baldwin of Pueblo, Colorado & Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Rutledge of Sharpsburg.

Mrs. James (Verna) Maharry, wife of James Maharry, deceased, died at Riverside, California Monday morning according to word received by two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Fern Bell and Mrs Orville Brisker.

She was a former resident of Lenox.

Reynolds, Perry James -

Perry Reynolds, father of Darrel Reynolds of this city, died August 20 at Clarinda.

Perry James Reynolds, eldest son of Malcolm and Emma Fenton Reynolds, was born October 15, 1880 in Appanoose County, Iowa. He was 91 years, 10 months and 5 days of age at

the time of his death.

He was united in marriage to Nora Elizabeth Mason Nov. 4, 1904. To this union eleven children were born. They made their home in Wayne, Adams and Montgomery counties. The

past 3½ years Mr. Reynolds has been cared for in the Gillispie Nursing Home in Clarinda.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Nora, and his brothers Bart, Elmer, Tom, and Charley, 3 sons-in-law, 2 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

He is survived by eleven children: Evan Crawford of Osceola, Ruby Agnew and husband Darley of Pacific Junction, Ia., Nina Agnew of Nodaway, Everett and wife Myrtle of Greely, Colo., Horatio and wife Gladys of Fairfax, Virginia, Herbert and wife Mary Belle of La Habra, Cal., Ruth Adams of Clarinda, Imogene Miller and husband Glen of Corning, Iowa,

Woodraw and wife Florence of Glendale, Ariz., Darrell and wife Marjorie of Lenox, Francis and wife Ruth of Des Moines, and one sister-in-law, Jewell Reynolds of Centerville, Iowa,

22 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.

Mr. Reynolds was engaged in farming in his earlier years. He spent his life for his family.

The last thirty years of his married life he was the constant companion devoting his love and care to his invalid wife before her passing away in 1961.

Riley,William Clark -

William Riley, 65, long-time resident of rural Lenox, died September 17th at his home of an apparent heart attack.

William Clark Rlley, son of William H. and Emma Margaret Schafroth Riley was born in Mercer township, Adams County, Iowa, on December 1, 1906. He died at the age of 65 years,

9 months and 17 days. He lived his entire life in Adams county and died on the home place where he was born.

He was baptized into the Mercer Center Church in 1955 and attended regularly.

Mr. Riley was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Clarence.

He leaves to mourn his passing one sister, Mrs. Lillian Sterling of Corning, two brothers, Howard of Lenox and Raymond of Corning, three sisters-in-law, Pauline Riley, Helen Riley

and Elste Riley and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 22 at 10:30 am at the Mercer Center Church with Rev. Floyd Newbrough officiating.

Music was furnished by Mrs. Norma Paymal, Mrs. Lonnie Barker and Mrs. James Beck.

Bearers were Richard Riley, Harlan Riley, Darrell Riley, Russell Riley, Gene Brown and Ivan Sterling.

Burial was in the Lenox cemetery.
