Barker, Bud Wayne -

Bud Barker, 68, farmer living 5 miles northwest of Lenox, was found dead about 10:30 a. m. Tuesday. He apparently suffered a heart attack while driving his tractor along the road. He was able to shut off the motor and get off but was dead when found.

Jess Givens, who lives 3 miles west of the Barkers, was the one to find him.

Survivors include his widow, Ethel, a daughter, Mrs Harold Rundlett, 7 brothers, 2 sisters. The funeral will be Friday at Benders at 2 pm.

Barker, Bud Wayne -

Bud Wayne Barker, son of Lewis and Nancy (Blaine) Barker, was born in Scotland county, Mo., Jan 31, 1803. He lived most of his life in Taylor and Adams counties.

On Jan. 19, 1921 he was united in marriage to Ethel Boy of Conway at Maryville, Mo.  They started their married life together on a farm south of Clearfield and lived there one year then moved to the present farm home where they resided for the past forty years near where he passed away very suddenly May 29 at 10:30 am.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Ethel and Hilda (Mrs Harold Rundlett) whom he loving called his only daughter and her husband Harold who was like a son to him; seven brothers, Raymond Barker, Diagonal; Roy Barker, Mt Ayr; Leslie Barker, Silver City, Colo; Harvey Barker, Davenport; Vernie Barker, Kentucky; Lacy Barker, Clearfield; and Ernest Barker, Corning.

Three sisters, Mrs. Nora Toll, Creston, Mrs Minnie Baner, Blair, Neb; and Mrs. Myrtle Ambrose, Lenox; a number of nieces and nephews and other relatives.  He was preceded in death by his father, mother and infant brother.

He was a great homebody and enjoyed his home and the flowers they grew together.  He will be sadly missed by his immediate family and relatives and by a host of friends.

Funeral services were held May 25 at the Bender Funeral Home in Lenox with Rev. Dan Adams and Rev. Leonard Lutz officiating.  Music was by Rolland Buxton, accompanied by Mrs. Marcia Bender.  He sang "Beyond the Sunset" and "Going Down the Valley".

Pall bearers were Harry Riley, Raymond Riley, Harold Riley, Clifford Casey, Lee Brokaw and Raymond Bunting.  Interment was in Fairview cemetery.

Bissell, Robert -

Robert Bissell, 17, of Corning, died at 9:30 p. m. Sunday at Rosary hospital of injuries suffered in an automobile accident early Sunday morning. Authorities said the accident occurred during a drag race with two other cars on highway 95, about 6-1/2 miles northwest of Corning. Bissell suffered a skull fracture and internal injuries, according to Dr C. L. Bain, Adams county medical examiner.

David Fife, 17, driver of the car in which Bissell was riding, is in a very critical condition at Rosary hospital with internal injuries and a crushed pelvis.  Another passenger in the car, Edgar Morris, 31, of Sioux City, also is in Rosary hospital but his injuries are not as serious.  He suffered cuts and bruises.

Authorities at the sheriff's office said the car driven by Fife left the road at a curve and traveled 220 feet during which it turned over at least three times.

Drivers of the other two cars which officials said were involved in the race were Donald Shinkle, 20, of Creston and Norman  Hardisty, 26, of Des Moines. Both were fined $100 and costs by Justice of the Peace George Thompson Sunday.

Shinkle also was sentenced to five days in the Adams county jail for driving while his license was under suspension.

Bissell is the son of Mr and Mrs Rex Bissell of Corning.

His death was the first traffic fatality in Adams county in 1962.

Funeral services for L C Bowers, former state representative, who died early Sunday at the Lenox Nursing Home were held at 2 pm Tuesday at Coen's Home for Funerals.  Rev Myron Hayes, assisted by Rev Herbert E Phillips officiated.  Burial was in Morgan cemetery near Kent.

Brown, Martha Jane Stonesifter -

Mrs Martha Brown, 74, died Friday evening after suffering a heart attack. She was dead on arrival at the Greater Community hospital at Creston, where she was being taken after suffering the attack.

The funeral services were Monday at the Bender Funeral Home with Rev David Shaeffer as minister. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery.

Mrs. Brown is survived by a son, Harvey, of Freewater, Ore., three daughters, Mrs Carl Clinton, Mrs Robert Manroe and Mrs Max Badgett, all of Lenox; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Her husband and a daughter preceded  her in death.

Brown, Martha Jane Stonesifter -

Martha Jane Brown, daughter of Michel and Rhoda Stonesifter, was born in Brentwood, Ark, Oct 25, 1888. She passed away at Creston hospital at the age of 74 years, 7 months, 27 days. She lived most of her early life in Arkansas and joined the Baptist Church at an early age.  She was married Oct 2, 1907 to Martin Brown who preceded her in death, as did an infant daughter, Viola June.

They moved to Iowa in 1917 where they made their home.

She leaves to cherish her memory a son, Harvey Brown of Freewater, Ore, and 3 daughters, Mrs Ruby Badgett, Mrs Beulah Clinton and Mrs Bonnie Manroe, and 5 grandchildren, Mrs Shirley Rogers, Phyllis Badget, Linda Manroe, Raymond Brown and Eldon Brown, 5 great grandchildren, a daughter-in-law, Mable and 3 sons-in-law, 7 sisters and 2 brothers.

She was a wonderful mother and grandmother.

Buchanan, Wm. Murray -

Funeral services were held Friday morning at Des Moines for Wm Murray Buchanan, 51, with burial at Glendale cemetery in Des Moines.

Mr Buchanan was Chief Control Tower operator at the Waterloo airport. He lived in Cedar Falls and suffered a heart attack while driving home from his work.

Survivors include his widow; 2 sons, a daughter, a brother, also a sister, Mrs Eleanor Burkhalter of Lenox and his father, Chas B Buchanan, who resides at the Lenox hotel.

Mr Buchanan and Mrs Burkhalter left Wednesday to be with the family and attend the services, they returned Saturday.

Catlett, Roy -

Roy Catlett, 63, died at his home in Corning Monday evening. The funeral will be at the Roland Funeral Home in Corning at 2 p. m. Thursday with burial in the Stringtown cemetery.

Mr Catlett lived in the Lenox area for many years and has many relatives here.

Clark, Lela Gertrude Keith -

Mrs Lela Clark, 84, of Sharpsburg died Saturday evening at the Creston hospital.

Funeral services were Tuesday at 2 p m at the Methodist church at Sharpsburg. Burial in the Cromwell cemetery.

Survivors include 2 daughters, Miss Eva Clark and Miss Allie Clark both of Sharpsburg, 1 son James of Clayton, Wash.

Clark, Lela Gertrude Keith -

Lela Gertrude Keith, daughter of Marshall and Emma Keith, was born near Fremont, la., Oct 15, 1877 and passed away July 7, 1962 at the age of 84 years, 8 months, 22 days.

On Oct 27, 1897 at Kent, la., she was united in marriage to James H Clark who preceded her in death March 24, 1939.

Three children survive: James H of Deer Park, Wash.; Eva and Allie at home. One son, William Everett passed away Feb 17, 1949 at Deer Park, Wash.

Her husband and she moved to a farm north of Sharpsburg in February, 1902. She lived in and near Sharpsburg for 60 years.

She became a Christian when 13 years of age and became a member of the Methodist church where she has worked and labored all her life.  When moving to Sharpsburg she transferred her letter from Kent to the Sharpsburg Methodist church in February, 1902 where she has been a member for 60 years.

Douglas, Earl Melvern -

Earl Douglas, a well known farmer, passed away at his home Saturday after suffering a heart attack. Mr Douglas, 52, was in his third year as president of the Lenox Stock and Saddle Club and served in the Taylor County Sheriff's Posse for five years.

The funeral was Tuesday afternoon, June 20, at the United Presbyterian church with Rev James Eddy as minister. The burial was in the Lenox cemetery.

Obituary

Earl Melvern Douglas, second son of Gilbert and Mildred Hunt Douglas was born Jan 11, 1910 near Liberty, Neb., and passed away at his home 4-1/2 miles west of Lenox June 23, 1962 at the age of 62 years, 5 months and 12 days.

He attended public schools in the vicinity of Liberty and joined the United Presbyterian Church at Mission Creek at an early age. Later he transferred his membership to the Lenox Unified Presbyterian church.

In March, 1924, he moved with his family to a ranch near Atkinson, Neb., where he furthered his education and enjoyed life with his love for family and friends. Earl was a great lover of the outdoors and ranch life.

In 1931 he moved with his family to Lenox, Iowa.

On March 27, 1938 , he was united in marriage to Alberta Jean Saunders and their home has since been in the vicinity of Lenox.

He was preceded in death by his loving mother in 1945, and infant sister, Beulah Arlene in 1930 and a nephew Lee Clair Douglas in 1934.

Left to mourn his passing are his beloved wife Jean, his father, Gilbert Douglas, two brothers, Glen of Lenox and Don of Prescott, three sisters, Mrs. Don (Minerva) Tully, Mrs. Harold (DeLoris) Beck and Mrs. Delman (Bernice) Brown, all of Lenox.  Also several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews whom he dearly loved, besides many other relatives and a multitudes of friends.

Earl took an active part in anything for the betterment of his fellow man. He served as a trustee on the United Presbyterian Church board and at the time of his death was president of the Lenox Stock and Saddle Club, and a member of the Taylor County Sheriff posse.

Earl loved life and lived by the golden rule. He was a faithful husband and a loving son, a buddy to his brothers, a pal to his sisters, a precious uncle and a sincere friend. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends.

Mrs Clara Edwards, 87, died Sunday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs Eddie Brown in Lincoln, Neb. Services are being held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Bender Funeral home with burial in Lenox cemetery. Her husband, Charles, preceded her in death.

Surviving are the following children: Noble Holland, Menlo, la., Wm Edwards, Milwaukee, Wise., Graham and Robert in California, Henry of Lincoln, Mrs Charles Wilson, Philadelphia, Pa., Mrs Eddie Brown, of Lincoln; Mrs Emma Wells of Phoenix, Ariz; also 18 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren.

Haigler, Rex -

Rex Haigler, 46, of Prescott died suddenly Monday evening. Funeral services will be held at 2 p m Thursday at the Roland funeral home in Corning with Rev Don Briley officiating and burial in Evergreen cemetery at Prescott.

Surviving are his widow, Geraldine; two sons, Gerald of Omaha and Robert at home, and a daughter, Vonda, also at home. Also surviving, a sister, Mrs Walter Brown of Brooks and a brother, Fred of Sioux City.

Howard, Jean R -

Jean Howard, 61,of Lenox, died at a nursing home in Creston Saturday evening. He was employed at the nursing home.

Mr Howard had lived in Lenox until  eight years ago.

Funeral .services were held at the Bender funeral home at 2 p.m.  Wednesday. Rev. A J Clements officiated. Burial was in Lenox cemetery.

Mr Howard is survived by 3 sons, Melvin and LaVaughn of Lenox and Dary of Redondo Beach, Calif.; a daughter, Mrs Norma Warrick of North Bend, Ore.; and six grandchildren. His wife preceded him in death.

Howard, Jean R -

Jean R Howard son of E E Howard and Eva Mae Wherry Howard was born in Union County Iowa, March 25, 1901; and passed away June 23, 1962, at the Pearl Cochran Nursing Home, Creston, where he was employed the last six years.

Jean married Opal Margaret Belding June 20, 1920. They made their home on a farm south of Lenox and it was here four children were born. When the children were small they moved to Lenox. While in Lenox he was employed at the Lenox water works.

He was a quiet, well liked man that will be greatly missed by family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Opal on July 13, 1951; also his father and mother and one brother Hal of Illinois.

Surviving him are three sons Daryl and wife Florence of Redondo Beach, Cal; Lavaughn and wife Carol of Lenox, one daughter Norma Warrick and husband Orvllle of North Bend, Ore; three grandsons and three granddaughters.

He also leaves to mourn his brother Paul Howard of Omaha; Jim and Jack of California and two sisters Mrs Edna Tourigney of Inglewood, Cal and Mrs Agnes Wickman of Council Bluffs and stepmother Mrs Ann Howard of Creston.

Funeral services were held Wednesday June 27, 1962 at the Bender Funeral home. Services were conducted by Rev A J Clements. Music was by Mrs James Beck, Mrs Lonnie Barker and Mrs Gene Paymal. Pallbearers were Bill Reed, Lewis Reed, Hal Pierce, Eldon Jones, Reldon Beadel, Wendell Beadel.

Final resting place is Fairview cemetery at Lenox.

James, Margaret Amelia Shaver Nixon -

Mrs. Amelia James, 74, of Lenox died Monday morning in the Clearview Rest home at Clearfield after an extended illness.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. George Morris of Lenox and two sons, Monson Shaver of Tokyo, Japan and Lloyd James of Fort Worth, Tex; also 10 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Funeral services will be at 2 pm Thursday at the Bender Funeral home, the Rev. David Schaeffer officiating.  Burial will be in the Lenox cemetery.

James, Margaret Amelia Nixon Shaver -

Margaret Amelia James, daughter of Hugh and Mary Catherine Nixon, was born on March 17, 1888 and died on Monday, May 14, 1962. She had reached the age of 74 years, 1 month, and 27 days.

Her childhood days were spent on a farm six miles west of Lenox.

On Feb. 24, 1915, she married Milton Shaver who died Feb. 1, 1920. To this union were born Ruth Elizabeth and Monson William. On August 28, 1924, she married George James, who also preceded her in death on June 4, 1934. To this union was born  Lloyd Merle.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, John, Martin and Henry, and two sisters, Elizabeth Fleming and Jane Nixon.

She leaves to mourn her passing, one daughter, Mrs. Ruth Morris, Lenox; two sons, Monson Shaver of Tokyo, Japan and Lloyd James of Ft. Worth, Tex.; one stepson, Keith James of Lenox; ten grandchildren; one great grandson; two brothers,

Thomas Nixon of Gregory, S. Dak., and William Nixon of Lenox; four sisters, Mrs. Lillie Pullman of Osceola, Miss Emma Nixon, Miss Isabel Nixon and Mrs. Ruth Boltinghouse of Lenox; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Edith Nixon of Lenox and Mrs. Bessie Nixon of West Union; one brother-in-law, Archie Fleming of Gravity; also nieces and nephews.

She was a kind and loving mother and will be greatly missed by relatives and friends.

Mrs. James accepted Christ in her youth and was a member of the Blue Grove Church. She transferred her membership to the Lenox Christian Church in 1934.

Funeral services were held Thursday, May 17, 1962, at 2 PM., at the Bender Funeral home with Rev. David Shaeffer of Lenox officiating. Burial was in the Fairview cemetery. Pall bearers were her nephews, Harry Stafford, William J. Nixon, Ralph Pullman, Donald Miller, Gail Miller and Gerald Nixon.

Krohmer, George -

George Krohmer, 81, died at the Greater Community hospital in Creston Friday at 8 p. m. He had been in the hospital several days and had undergone surgery.

The services were Monday at the United Presbyterian church the Rev James Eddy officiating. Burial was in the Lenox cemetery.

George Krohmer was born Jan 29, 1881 at Dettingen, Germany. He passed away June 1, 1962. His father was Joseph Krohmer and his mother was Marle Haas Krohmer. In 1888 he came with his parents to the United States.

March 9, 1925 he was united in marriage to Katie Friedrichson. To this union were born two daughters, Mrs Ann Cooper of Conway, la, and Mrs Mary Smejdir of Corning, la. They moved to a farm southwest of Lenox where they made their home until they moved to their present home in Lenox.

Survivors include his wife, Katie, and two daughters, two sons-in-law, Dale Cooper and Gilbert Smejdlr , five grandchildren, one brother John of Illinois and two sisters, Mrs Mary Larson and Mrs Rose Cain of Lenox. John Krohmer of Lenox is a cousin.

Reimer, Dale -

Funeral services; were to be Wednesday at Afton for Dale Reimer, 50, of Dallas, Tex. He was a native of Lenox and a graduate of Lenox high school.

He leaves his widow, Bonnie and one daughter.

Pail bearers were to be James Hughes, George Grey, Percy Wynn and Eldon Jones of Lenox, Joy Arnold of Des Moines and Wendell Nelson of Winterset.

Reynolds, John -

John Reynolds of Hopkins, Mo, 68, died Sunday, June 3 at Ringgold County Hospital in Mt Ayr. Funeral services were Wednesday afternoon, June 6, at Hopkins.

Mr Reynolds, a retired railroad employee, had resided in Hopkins the last 29 years.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs Marie Reynolds, one son, Donald R of Sedalia, Mo, one daughter, Mrs Donald Olmsted of Shenandoah, two brothers, Ellwood of New Market and Artie of Ottumwa, one sister, Mrs Millie Kirby of Johnstown, Colo, and 4 granddaughters.

His wife was the former Marie Paymal, daughter of Mr and Mrs George Paymal all formerly of Lenox.

Robb, Perry -

Word has been received here that Mr and Mrs Harold Robb of Burlington have lost their 6 year old son, Perry.  He was born in Lenox while his parents lived here, while his father was high school athletic coach.

Mr and Mrs Robb and three daughters survive. They were in the park at Burlington. One of the daughters had gone down the play slide in the park. Her father caught her as she slid down. Then Perry came down the slide. His father also caught him at the bottom of the slide; but he was dead as he caught him. It was a sad day in the park for the Robb family. The accident happened just a few days ago.

Rogers, Eula Belle Drain -

Mrs A H Rogers, 75, died at her home northeast of Diagonal Wednesday evening. She had been ill for some time. Services were held Saturday at the Bender funeral home, the Rev Sam Bowser of the Tingley Methodist church officiating.

Burial was in the Lenox cemetery.

Eula Belle Drain Rogers was born in Ringgold county, near Tingley, la., June 6, 1887 and passed away at her home, the place of her birth May 9, 1962 at the age of 74 years, 11 months and 3 days.

On March 8, 1912 she was united in marriage to Alpha H Rogers. To this union was born one daughter who passed away in infancy.

Mrs Rogers was the daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth Drain who preceded her in death. Left to mourn is her husband Alpha of their home near Tingley; one brother John Drain; and his wife Bird of Lenox; other relatives, and a host of friends. She attended the Lenox high school and later Parsons college, She spent many years teaching music.

In the prime of her life she was active in church work. At the time of her death she was a member of the Methodist church in Tingley.

Ryan, Daniel J -

Dan Ryan, 96, retired farmer, died Thursday morning at the Lenox Rest Home where he had been a patient for four years.

He was a resident of Lenox most of his life. Rosary was said Friday at 8 p. m. at the Bender Funeral Home. His wife preceded him in death.

Survivors are three sons, Leo, Omaha, Eugene, Raton, New Mex.,  Lawrence, Glenwood; two daughters, Mrs Luther Sharp, Bedford, Mrs Franklin Burch, Bedford; three sisters, Mrs Lewis Deming, Dubuque, Miss Agnes Ryan, Gary, Ind., Mrs Sylvia Wilson, Fairfield;, six grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.

The funeral was Saturday, June 28 at 9:30 a. m. at St. Patrick's Church, the Rev. Adam Reisz officiating. Burial was in Lenox cemetery.

Ryan, Daniel J -

Daniel J Ryan, son of the late Patrick and Margaret Ryan, was born in Allamake County near Waukon, Ia, and moved with his folk when a small boy to a farm near Conway, where he lived and farmed.

He passed away at the Lenox Rest Home June 21, 1962 at the age of 95 years, 3 months and 1 day.

On Feb 5, 1890 he was married to Majenty Skinner.  To this union 11 children were born.  Those surviving are Eugene Ryan and Raton, N Mex; Mrs Lela Sharp, Bedford, Ia; Leo Ryan of Omaha; Mrs. Reva Burch, Bedford; Lawrence Ryan, Glenwood, Ia; and 5 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.  His wife and 6 children preceded him in death.

He was the oldest of a family of 13 and only 3 sisters survive: Mrs Lewis Demming of Dubuque, la.; Agnes Ryan of Gary, Ind., and Mrs Sylvan Wilson of Fairfield, la.

He lived in Prescott, la., with a son until Sept. 1, 1957 when in failing health he decided to come to Lenox to make his home.

Funeral services were from St Patrick's church in Lenox Saturday morning at 9:30 with burial in Fairview cemetery.

Sullivan, Lee -

Graveside services were held at the Lenox cemetery Saturday at 2:30 p. m. for Lee Sullivan, 85, of Des Moines, a nephew of Mrs Roy Nelson of Lenox.

Mr Sullivan died Thursday at a Des Moines hospital. He was employed at the Standard station in Lenox before moving to Des Moines.

Services at Des Moines were at 9:45 a. m. Saturday. Mr Sullivan was a bachelor.

Survivors include two sisters, Mrs Ed Lock of Gravity, Mrs Charles Weston of Des Moines; three brothers, Charles of Los Angeles, Cal., Arthur of Boise, Ida., and Ray of Des Moines.

Thompson, Lou M -

Mrs Lou M. Thompson, 85, died Friday, May 26, in her home at Whitehall, Mont., according to a clipping from a paper in Butte, Mont.  Mrs. Thompson was born Dec 18, 1876 in Lenox, and graduated from the school here. She attended Normal college in Oakland and taught schools in rural areas several years.

She was married to Wm Thompson Nov 18, 1901, at Omaha. He died March 14, 1939.  She had been a  librarian at Whitehall for 15 years.

Survivors are a brother, B. C. Tripp, of Omaha; a son Richard of Whitehall, also 2 daughters.

Funeral services were at the Trinity Methodist church where she was a member. The lady who sent the clipping did not sign her name so we can't give credit to the sender who wrote that she grew up in Ringgold county and knew people here.

Van Heeswyk, Mrs. Ora -

Mrs Ora Van Heeswyk of Lacona, Iowa, 52 years old, died suddenly Friday afternoon. She was a sister-in-law of Mrs Don Bubb and Mrs George Grey. The funeral was at Lacona Monday morning. Relatives attending from this vicinity were Mr and Mrs George Grey, Mr and Mrs Don Bubb, Mr and Mrs Ed Morey, Mr and Mrs Harley Morley, Mr and Mrs Lou Vanderpluym and Vera Hufnagel.

Williamson, Roy I-

Roy I Williamson, 76, died Monday afternoon at his home in Clearfield after a long illness. A farmer in the Clearfield community until he retired, he is survived by his widow, Ethel; a daughter, Mrs Marjorie Payne of Clearfield; a nephew Charles Copp of California who had been raised in the Williamson home; a granddaughter, Karen Payne of Des Moines; two brothers, Erna of Nampa, Idaho and Fred of Blockton; and a sister Lillie of St Joseph, MO.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 p m at the Methodist church in Clearfield, with the Rev Herbert Phillips officiating. Burial was in Clearfield cemetery.

Wray, Charles -

Charles Wray, 84, died Sunday morning at his home in the Salem community. Funeral services are being held Wednesday at 2 p m at the Salem Church of the Brethren, with the Rev Leonard Lutz officiating. Burial will be in the Salem cemetery.

Survivors include his widow, Mary; a daughter, Mrs Velda Licare of Redwood City, Calif, a son, Leo; 4 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren.
