Badgett, Ruby Crystal Brown -

Ruby Crystal Brown Badgett, daughter of Martin and Martha Stonesifer Brown, was born May 22, 1913 at Brentwood,

Arkansas. She died at the Creston Manor Nursing Home on July 4 at the age of sixty-seven years, one month and

twelve days. Ruby had been a resident of the nursing home for several weeks.

She moved to Iowa with her family when she was four years old and spent the rest of her life in the Lenox and Kent communities.

Ruby and Max R. Badgett were united in marriage at Omaha, Nebraska on December 24, 1931. They farmed in this

community for many years and since retiring enjoyed camping and meeting new friends. Ruby joined the Prairie Star Church at

Kent on February 23, 1964 and later transferred her membership to the United Presbyterian Church in Lenox.

She will be remembered as a good mother and wife, a grandmother who enjoyed her grandchildren immensity and a gardener

whose love of garden and yard was obvious to all who passed her home.

Ruby is survived by her husband, Max, of Lenox; her daughter, Phyllis Sevier and husband Jack of Kent; two grandchildren,

Michael and Michelle Jones of Kent; two sisters Beulah Clinton and husband Carl of Lenox and Bonnie Manroe and husband Bob, also

of Lenox; a sister-in-law, Mable Brown of Milton-Freewater, Oregon; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Harvey D. Brown and an infant sister, Viola June Brown.

Services were held July 7 at 2 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Donald Fisher officiating. Roberta Lockhart,

organist accompanied Gwen Maynes as she sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In The Garden".

Casket bearers were Gene Swartz, Glen Davis, Tony Jennings, Mel Eighmy, Harlan Brown and Earl Clogue.

Interment was in the Morgan Cemetery at Kent.

The Larkin-Bender Funeral Home of Lenox was in charge of arrangements.

Beck, Charles W -

Charles W. Beck, the son of Phillip and Katherine (Hass) Beck was born January 28, 1887 at Lenox. He died August 4 at

the Lenox Care Center at the age of ninety-three years, six months and six days.

He was united in marriage with Mildred M. Herbst December 24, 1919 at the Mercer Center Church. She preceded

him in death March 6, 1968.

Mr. Beck farmed in the Lenox area before his retirement. He was a member of the Lenox United Methodist Church and

the Tremont Masonic Lodge in Lenox.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Phyllis Beck, July 12, 1956.

Survivors include a son, Roy of Sharpsburg, three grandchildren, Judy Lucht and Richard and Terry Beck, four

great grandchildren, Amanda and Michael Lucht and Brian and Joseph Beck, and two sisters, Emma Beck of St.

Joseph, Missouri and Rose Beck of Lenox.

Services were held August 7 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Lenox with Reverend W.C. Trembly officiating.

Music was provided by Norma Paymal, organist, and Marilyn Beck, vocalist. Selections were "The Old Rugged

Cross", "Ivory Palaces" and "How Great Thou Art".

Casket bearers were Roland Boltinghouse, Leonard Knott, Leland Wurster, Bill Scott, Raymond Miller, and Bernard

Plowman.

Interment was in the West Fairview Cemetery. The Larkin-Bender Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Beemer, John Howard -

John Howard Beemer of Sumner, Missouri, formerly of the Bushville area, died at his home May 9 at the age of seventy three.

He was born near Lenox, Iowa and was the son of Simeon and Alice Whitecotton Beemer. He moved with his parents to

Hogridge, Missouri in 1922 at the age of fifteen.

He was united in marriage with Mildred Foster on December 22, 1928 at Brookfield, Missouri. He moved to Gravity, Iowa in 1941

and farmed there until 1953. He then returned to Sumner, Missouri where he was a member of the Sumner Methodist Church.

Mr. Beemer was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters; Rella Akers, Nellie Blair, Mollie Rumbaugh and Ollie Sturms and

one granddaughter, Jean Marie Wickham.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred of the home, two sons, Darrell of Tucson, Arizona and Carrell of Chillicothe, Missouri;

three daughters, Lila Wickham of Creston, Norma Jean Milford of Laclede, Missouri and Patty Sue Boesch of Rolla, Missouri;

one brother, Sim B. Beemer of Conway, four sisters, Minnie of Grants Bass, Oregon, Lottie Ross of Leon, Sara Foster of

Sumner, Missouri and Grayce Houchin of Corning; sixteen grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Book, Dallas LaVern Author -

Dallas LaVern Arthur Book, the son of Arthur and Laura Anderson Book was born December 8, 1912 in Yorktown, Iowa

and died at the Veterans Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska June 22 at the age of sixty-seven years, six months and fourteen

days.

He lived in the Yorktown and Bedford communities until 1939 when he moved to Lenox. He was a member of the Lutheran

Church in Yorktown and was a veteran of World War II, having served his country in New Guinea.

Mr. Book was united in marriage with Wilma Short May 6, 1975. They made their home in Lenox.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, LeRoy.

He is survived by his wife, Wilma, one sister-in-law, Margaret Book of Bedford, and one niece and one nephew.

Services were held at the Larkin-Bender Funeral Home June 24 at 2 p.m. with Reverend Floyd Newbrough of Huxley

officiating. The organist, Norma Paymal, played the selections of "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In The Garden".

Casket bearers were Kenneth Black, Merle Henderson, Joe Neuhardt, Kenneth Schafer, Lvle Nelson, and Ronnie Nelson.

Interment was in the West Fairview Cemetery at Lenox.

Hewitt, Lena -

Lena Hewitt. a former resident at the Sunrise Apartments in Lenox, died August 17 at a hospital in Fairfield. She

had lived at the Nelson Nursing Home in Fairfield for two years.

Services were held at the Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford at 1:30 p.m. August 19 with burial in the Conway

cemetery.

Mrs. Hewitt is survived by two sons, Billie of Oskaloosa and Mahlon of Fairfield.

Mrs. Bill Sawyer, Mrs. Lawrence Kirby and Mrs. Grace Selders of Lenox attended the services.

Johnson, Betty Jane Shroeber -

Mrs. Betty Jane Stroeber Johnson, daughter of Edward Adam and Hazel Lucille Boyer Stroeber was born near Creston,

Iowa on July 19, 1926. She died July 31 at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri at the age of fifty-four years and

twelve days.

She attended the Macksburg, Iowa High School and graduated as Valedictorian of the Class of 1943. She then attended

Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville where she graduated with honors and received her Bachelor of Science

Degree in Secondary Education with a double major in Commerce and Business Administration and physical education. From 1945

through 1960, she taught both physical education and coached along with her work as a business and commerce instructor

in the Conway and Villisca schools in Iowa and also in the Rock Port, Albany, and Stanberry schools in Missouri.

On June 1, 1950, Betty was united in marriage with Ross Evan Johnson at the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church near

Winterset, Iowa.

She and her husband were co-owners and licensed funeral directors of the Johnson Funeral Homes in Stanberry, Maryville,

Maitland, Burlington Junction, and Conception Junction, Missouri.

Mrs. Johnson was an active and dedicated member of the Missouri Funeral Directors Association, National Funeral

Directors Association, First District Missouri Funeral Directors and Embalmers Association, Business and Professional

Women's Association, The American Legion Auxiliary, Stanberry Parent-Teacher Organization.

Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church near Winterset, Iowa, and the Christian Women's Fellowship Club. She was also past

president of the Fidelis Study Club, Missouri Federation of Women's Clubs, MI Club, and Pi Omega Pi national honorary

fraternity of Maryville. Missouri. Betty was also a member of the American Association of University Women, past president

of the Zeta Beta Chapter of Xi Gamma Sigma Phi sorority, and Alpha Psi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi sorority, where she

received the Order of the Rose award and Preceptor Alpha Psi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi sorority being a charter member

of twenty-six years.

Betty was preceded in death by her father on January 11, 1973.

Survivors include her husband, Ross, two sons, Ross Evan Johnson, Jr. and Robert Joseph Johnson of the home,

her mother, Hazel L. Stroeber of Macksburg, Iowa, two brothers, Edward W. Stroeber of Dallas Center and Robert E. Stroeber

of West Des Moines, a sister, Mrs. Mary L. Schulz of Orient, Iowa, many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She left her imprint on many people and was loved by all who knew her.

Services were held Monday, August 4 at the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel in Stanberry, Missouri with the Reverend Neil

Blair officiating. The organist was Mrs. Mary Parnam and the soloist was the Reverend Ray Forsyth. Selections were "How

Great Thou Art" and "Going Home".

Pallbearers were Ross E. Johnson, Ross Evan Johnson, Jr., Robert Joseph Johnson, Roben E. Stroeber, Rex I. Schulz,

Ed L. Stroeber, Don R. Schulz and Kent Troester. Honorary pallbearers were Quentin Parman, Merle Pederson, Martin

Jacoby, Vern Stout, Gary Hann, Robert Fisher, Forrest Stark, Al Hansen, Ralph Hughes, Ernest Poff, Harry McClure, Mart

McGahan, Dr. Carl Fehrle, William H. Eckles and Sam W. Hatheway.

Interment was in the High Ridge Cemetery in Stanberry, Missouri.

Jones, Annie Catherine O'Connell -

Annie Catherine Jones of Lenox was born in Taylor County on November 5, 1886. She died June 4 at the Rosary

Hospital in Corning. Annie was the daughter of John and Margaret O'Connell.

She was united in marriage with Harry Jones on February 14, 1911 at St. Patrick's Church in Corning.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1957, a daughter in 1944, and twelve brothers and sisters.

Survivors include a son, Arthur Jones of Lenox, two daughters, Margaret Jones of Lenox and Mrs. Clinton (Mildred)

Chadwick of Shenandoah, and one grandson.

Services were held Saturday, June 7 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lenox with Father Timothy Fitzgerald officiating.

George Sweeney served as lector. Pat Miller played the organ.

Casketbearers were Lloyd Hamblin, Donald Beck, Leo Ryan, Edmund Tally, Francis Wiand, and Frank Stanger.

Interment was in the Calvary Cemetery at Corning.

Kothe, Connie Bloom -

Mrs. Kenny L. (Connie) Kothe, age 37, died May 26 in a Madison, Wisconsin hospital.

Interment was in Rockton, Illinois. Survivors include her husband, Kenny; two children, Jeff and Cherie of the home; her

parents, Mr. and Mrs. Warren F. Bloom of Preston, Iowa; three brothers, Donald Bloom and Marshall Bloom of Rockton,

Illinois and Arlen Bloom of Des Moines.

Mills, B J (Bob) -

B.J. (Bob) Mills of Springdale, Arkansas died August 14 in Springdale at the age of fifty-five years. He was a former

resident of Lenox.

Mr. Mills, the son of Rufus and Pauline Reynolds Mills, was born April 24, 1925 in Brentwood. Arkansas. He was a

farmer near Springdale, a member of the Arkansas Cattlemen's Association and served on the Agricultural Stabilization

Conservation county committee.

Mr. Mills served with the United States Navy during World War II. He was a member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church

in Springdale.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Betty Duncan Mills of the home, his parents of Springdale, two brothers, R. Glen

Mills of Montrose. California and Bill L. Mills of Boston, Massachusetts, two sisters, Mrs. lone Duncan of Springdale

and Miss Jody Mills of Rogers, Arkansas, one niece and one nephew.

Services were held Saturday, August 16, at the Sisco Funeral Chapel in Springdale with burial in the Brentwood Cemetery near

Springdale.

Memorials may be made to the Oakgrove Baptist Church or to the American Cancer Society.

Nelson, Everett -

Everett Nelson, son of Peter and Ida Belle Reynolds Nelson, was born June 21, 1902 on a farm four and a half miles northeast

of Lenox. He died at the Rosary Hospital in Corning June 10 at the age of seventy-seven years, eleven months and nineteen

days.

Everett grew to manhood on the family farm three-fourths of a mile north of Lenox. He continued to live and farm there

for forty-three years after the death of his parents. He had been confined to the hospital and a nursing home since

breaking his leg May 10.

In addition to his parents; he was preceded in death by five brothers, two sisters and three nephews.

He is survived by two sisters-in-law, Ethel Nelson of Lenox and Esther Nelson of Creston; six nephews, four nieces, and

several great nieces and nephews.

He enjoyed visiting with neighbors and friends as he sat in his pickup on Main Street. Everett was a kind man who

liked animals. His pride and joy and constant companion was his dog, Queenie.

Services were held at the Larkin-Bender Funeral Home Thursday afternoon, June 12, at 1:30 p.m. Reverend Floyd Newbrough

of Huxley, Iowa officiated. Mildred Walter, organist, accompanied Kim Nelson as she sang "In The Garden" and

"Beyond The Sunset".

Casketbearers were Dennis Nelson, Gary Nelson, Rick Nelson, Mark Nelson, Brent Yount, and Richard Kozeliski.

Interment was in the East Fairview Cemetery at Lenox.

Pullman, Eugene LeRoy -

Eugene LeRoy Pullman, the son of Eugene and Lillie Nixon Pullman was born on a farm north of Lenox October 12, 1902.

He died of cancer at Wesley Acres in Des Moines August 19. He was seventy-seven years old.

Reverend Pullman attended elementary school in Lenox and graduated from Thayer High School. He also graduated from

Simpson College in Indianola and became a member of the ministeral profession on December 3, 1924.

He was united in marriage with Laura M. Miller in June of 1926. She preceded him in death in 1933.

Reverend Pullman and Grace Carlson were united in marriage December 12. 1934.

He was a United Methodist minister for almost fifty-five years having served more than forty congregations throughout

the state. His alma mater, Simpson College, recognized his work with a Special Recognition Award for Community Service.

Survivors include his wife, Grace, two sons, David of Columbus, Ohio and Donald of Elmhurst, Illinois; one daughter,

Margaret Keller of Urbandale; a brother, George of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; a sister-in-law, Ruby Pullman of Des Moines;

four grandsons, two granddaughters, and other relatives.

Services were held August 22 at the Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Urbandale with burial in Indianola.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Aldersgate United Methodist Church or to Simpson College in Indianola.

Isabel Nixon, Mr. and Mrs. William B. Nixon and Ruth Boltinghouse, all of Lenox, Bertha Stafford of Gravity,

Minnie Stults of Maryville, Missouri, Geneva Hagee of St. Joseph, Missouri, and Mr. and Mrs. William J. Nixon of Afton

attended the funeral.

Toler, Annola -

Annola Toler, daughter of Benjamin Alpheus and Marietta Toler was born April 8, 1889. She died August 21 at the Lenox

Care Center where she had been a resident for a number of years.

Her early life was spent on a farm southwest of Lenox in the Blue Grove community. She was a public school teacher for

several years and later devoted much of her time to Christian education. She was a member of the First Christian Church in

Lenox.

Survivors include her sister, May Becherer, and several cousins.

Services were held Saturday, August 23 at the First Christian Church in Lenox with Pastor Jack Cutbirth officiating. Harley

A. Porter was the organist with Mildred Walter, vocalist. Selections were "Sweet By and By" and "Mansion Over The

Hilltop".

Casket bearers were Harold Kerns, Mervin Shawler, Marvin Reed, Lloyd Ambrose, Jack Ambrose, Robert Reynolds, and

Duane Boyer.

Interment was in the West Fairview Cemetery. The Larkin-Bender Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Walter, Homer Andrew -

Homer Andrew Walter, son of Andrew and Cora Anderson Walter, was born December 12, 1903 on a farm in Adams County, a few miles northwest of Lenox. He died at the Rosary Hospital in Corning July 29, 1980 at the age of seventy-six years, seven months and seventeen days. He had been in failing health for a number of years.

He was united in marriage with Pauline Notz on Sept. 1, 1926. They had one son. Vernon. She preceded Homer in death December 26, 1934.

On August 15, 1937 he was united in marriage with Beatrice Butler. To this union one daughter, Coleen, was born.

Homer joined the Mercer Center Church when young and later transferred his membership to the United Presbyterian Church in Lenox. He served as usher at the church and was a faithful member as long as his health permitted.

He was a quiet and kind person and was very much interested in all of his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren; and in his community. He moved from the farm into town six years ago.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Lonzo Walter; and two sisters; Zelma Walter and Esther Waddell.

Homer leaves to mourn his passing his devoted wife, Beatrice, his son Vernon and wife Charlotte of Corning, his daughter, Coleen Wilkinson and husband LaRell of Lenox; seven grandchildren, David, Karl and Bonnie Walter of Corning, Mrs. Martin (Judy) McCrary of Wenathee, Washington, Melanie Barker of Ames, and Renae and LeAnne Wilkinson of Lenox; two great grandchildren, Corrie McCrary and Jason Walter, his brother Glenndon Walter of Prescott and many other relatives.

Services were held August 1 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Presbyterian Church in Lenox with Reverend Elmer West, pastor of the Salem Church of the Brethren, officiating. Roberta Lockhart, organist, accompanied Mildred Walter as she sang "How Great Thou Art" and "Just A Closer Walk With Thee".

Casket bearers were David Walter, Karl Walter, Steve Barker, Martin McCrary, Jerry Williams, and Garland Walter.

Honorary bearers were Harold Carey, Danell Reynolds, Lawrence Kirby, Kenneth Schaffer, Benne Miller, Pete Fitzgerald, James Calvin, and Russell Wurster.

Interment was in the East Fairview Cemetery at Lenox.

The Larkin-Bender Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Woods, Benjamin Franklin -

Benjamin Franklin Woods, the son of David and Cora Downing Woods, was born in Taylor County, Iowa February

13, 1902. He died August 13 at his home in Lenox at the age of seventy-eight years and six months.

He was united in marriage with Violet Weese October 6, 1932 in Worth County, Missouri. Ben worked as a farm hand

before moving to Lenox in 1945 where he was employed at the Davis Elevator until his retirement thirteen years ago. His

family, home and garden were his pride and joy.

Preceding him in death were his parents, one sister, Jessie Bougher, and one brother, Tom Woods.

Survivors include his loving wife. Violet of the home, three sons, Larry and wife Shirley of Creston, Lt. Ben F. Woods Jr.

stationed aboard the U.S.S. Santa Barbara and wife, Delores. and Duane and wife, Victoria of Massena; three

daughters, Verla Coulthard and husband Bud of Cedar Falls, Helen Lawrence and husband Bob of Stuart, and Patricia

Hingeley and husband Bill of Clearfield; eighteen grandchildren, six great grandchildren two brothers, Fred Woods of St.

Joseph, Missouri and Floyd Woods of Indianola; two sisters, Mary Howard of Phoenix and Letha Schuster of Blockton and

other relatives.

Services were held Friday, August 15 at 1:30 p.m. at the Larkin-Bender Funeral Home with Pastor Jack Cutbirth of the

First Christian Church officiating. Harley Porter was the organist.

Casket bearers were Lewis Key, Stanley Weese, Dean Weese, Dean Schuster, Dennis Loughry and Michael Bennett.

Interment was in the Athelstan Cemetery, Athelstan. Iowa.
