Ambrose, Clarence -
Clarence
Ambrose, 76, of Lenox, a farmer in Union and Taylor counties until his
retirement in 1955, died Monday at Rosary hospital in Corning. He moved
to
Lenox after his retirement.
Funeral
services will be held at 2 p. m. Thursday at the Bender funeral home with Rev.
Paul Faga of the Trinity Lutheran church in Creston
officiating.
Burial
will be in the Lenox cemetery.
Born
on Jan. 20, 1891, in Taylor county, he was married on Feb. 7, 1917, to Myrtle
Barker. Three daughters, Helen Riedel and Delma Bibtner of Kent and
Fern
Jackson, of Creston, and three sons, Eldon, Lyle and Russell Ambrose, all of
the Kent area, survive. A son, Ronald, died in infancy.
A
member of the Trinity Lutheran church in Creston, he was the son of Lewis
Ambrose and Anna Preston Ambrose.

Fred
Charles Becherer, son of Charles and Sarah Cochran Becherer, was born on a farm west of Lenox, Iowa, Dec. 26,
1892 and passed away at his home
August
25, 1967, at the age of 74 years, 7 months and 29 days.
He
was united in marriage to Estella May Toler Dec. 25, 1915. They resided on a
farm southwest of Lenox twenty-six years, then moved to the farm on
which
he lived since 1942.
He
was united with the Blue Grove Christian Church by faith in 1915 later
transferring his membership to the Lenox Christian church. He served as
township
clerk
of Grove township for a number of years.
He
is survived by his wife; one sister, a brother, one sister-in-law, four nieces,
two nephews, seven cousins and a host of friends.
Funeral
services were held from the Roland Funeral Home in Corning, Monday, August 28,
at 2:00 p. m., conducted by Rev. Paul Williams. Interment was in
the
Lenox cemetery.
Music
was by Mrs. John Narigon and Mrs. Joe Cook.
Pallbearers were Lawrence Orth, Frank Eigenheer, Harry Preston, George Schrader, Bill Paul and
Don Tully.

has been received of the death of Mrs. Eythel Kanoff Cochrun, 76, of 2935
Missouri Ave., South Gate, California. Mrs. Cochrun died Wednesday,
August
23 at her home in the west coast city.
Survivors
include one brother, John Kanoff of LaVerne, Calif., 2 nephews, Harold Kanoff of San Francisco, and L. G. Sidener of Quincey, Calif., and a niece,
Eythel V. Ferguson of Sacramento, Calif.
Funeral
services were conducted Saturday, Aug. 26th at 2:30 p. m., from the Biby and Belyea chapel with
burial in Sacramento.
Mrs. Cochrun is a former Lenox resident and had been a
resident of California 25 years and of South Gate for 10 years.

Glenn
M. Corum, of 1055 Adams Circle, died Friday morning
at Boulder Memorial Hospital after a short illness. He was born Sept. 22, 1894
at Mount Moriah,
Mo.
to Carl and Lillie Ann Corum.
He
served in the Army during World War I and during this time married Elsie Claire
Sarver at Mount Moriah. He graduated from Maryville
College, Maryville, Mo., and Hastings College, Hastings, Neb. He later received
his M.A. degree from the University of Nebraska,
Mr. Corum taught school at Fullertcn,
Louisville and Wymore, Neb., and Lenox, Iowa. He was superintendent of schools in
Louisville and Wymore and principal
of
the high school at Lenox.
He
retired from teaching in 1966 and moved to Boulder with his wife at that time.
He
was a member of the Methodist Church of Lenox, Wymore Lodge 104 A.F. and A.M.
and the American Legion and Rotary Club at Lenox.
He
is survived by his wife Elsie C. Corum; a daughter,
Mrs. Fred (Betty) Stoll, of Nebraska City, Neb.; one brother, Sell Corum, of Hopkins, Mo., and a grandson.
Services for Mr. Corum were held at Des Moines Tuesday at the Hamilton Funeral Home with
Geddes-Hibbard Mortuary in charge of the arrangements.

persons were killed in a two-car crash at the Stringtown corner, 7 miles north of Lenox, Thursday afternoon. Dead as a result of the
accident are Charlie
W.
Knott, 77, of route 1, Sharpsburg; his housekeeper, Vevia C. Farnham, 73, of Sioux Falls, S. D.; and Ruth
Pearson, about 65, of Berwyn, Ill. Seriously
injured
and hospitalized at Greater Community hospital in Creston is John Luke, 68, of
Cicero.
Highway
patrolmen investigating the accident reported Knott, accompanied by Mrs. Farnham, was driving east on highway 34, and started to
turn north onto a county road. He turned across highway 34 into the path of the
westbound car driven by Luke, in which Mrs. Pearson was a passenger. The cars
collided almost head-on.
Mr.
Knott and Mrs. Pearson died at the scene and Mrs. Farnham a short time later.
Mr.
Knott is a brother-in-law of Mrs. Gordon Elder of Lenox. He is also survived by
a son Leonard of rural Sharpsburg and a daughter.
Services
for Mrs. Farnham were held at the United Presbyterian
Church, Sharpsburg Sunday with Rev. John E. Kerr of Bedford, officiating.
Burial was in the Washington cemetery at Gravity.
Final
rites for Mr. Knott were held at 2 p. m. Monday at the Methodist Church in
Sharpsburg. Rev. Edward Tshetter of Clearfield
officiated. Burial was in the
Lenox
cemetery.
Mrs.
Pearson's body was taken to Berwyn,
Illinois for funeral service and burial.

Helen
Mary Turner, daughter of Archie and Mary Oliver Turner was born near Lenox,
Iowa and died in Asbury hospital in Salina, Kansas September 6, 1967
at
the age of 73 years. She was a graduate of Lenox high school and of Tarkio
College and taught in the high school at Clarinda, Iowa for three years.
She
was united in marriage with Mr. Albert Frehse of
Clarinda on September 15, 1921, and they made their home there until 1927 when
they moved to Salina,
Kansas.
They were the parents of one son, W. Robert Frehse.
Mrs. Frehse was a devoted, life-long member of the United
Presbyterian Church and a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood.
She
was preceded in death by her husband on October 24, 1965. She is survived by
her son Robert, his wife Dorothy, their children Steven and Carol Ann
of
Torrance, California, and by her sister Ann Turner of Lenox.
Funeral
services were held Friday, September 8 in the First Presbyterian Church,
Salina, with her pastor the Reverend Bernard Hawley officiating.
Burial was in Roselawn Memorial Cemetery.

Marine
Lance Corporal Marvin Gordon, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Gordon, Jr., of
Clearfield, died in Vietnam Sunday, Sept. 19th, when he was asphyxiated
by
exhaust fumes of an amphibious tractor in which he was riding, according to
word received by his parents from the department of defense.
The
youth was serving as a member of a mortar crew. He was to have completed his
service in Vietnam in about 60 days and had expected to return home Dec. 1st.
Survivors
include his parents, two sisters, Gloria and Laurie Gordon of Rock Island,
Ill., five brothers, Darwin, Donald, Jon, Cory and David, and his grandparents,
Mr.
and Mrs. Edward Gordon, Sr., of Clearfield and Mrs. Jessie: Buckzin of Rook Island, Ill., and Vern Livengood of Albia. He
was a nephew of Dr. M. T. Gordon of Clearfield.
The
body is to be returned from Vietnam and funeral services will be held at the
Zimmerman funeral home in Lovilia.
Final
rites are pending. Burial will be in the national cemetery at Rock Island.

Mrs.
Inez Hockett, 83, of Corning, died at a hospital in
Indianapolis, Indiana Wednesday morning. She became ill while at the home of
her daughter, where
she
was recuperating from an injury received a few weeks ago.
Funeral
services were conducted Saturday at 1 p. m. from the Roland Funeral home in
Corning.
Burial
was in the Clarinda cemetery.
She
is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Robert Brown of Kansas City, Mo., Mrs. W.
C. McLin of Indianapolis and Mrs. Helen Hawley of Clarinda.
A son, Max Hockett of Lenox, also survives along with
2 sisters, Mrs. Irma Bargenholt and Mrs. Ray Joy,
both of Corning.

Robert
Huber, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Duane Huber of Lenox, was killed in a traffic accident near
Paynesville, Minnesota Friday, August 25th.
Robert
was a member of the 168th Infantry of the 34th Division, Iowa National Guard,
and had been with the organization for summer training. Company A,
2nd
Bn., of the military group was enroute home following
the training period, and Robert, a member of the kitchen crew, had gone ahead
of the main body to prepare a meal for the soldiers while enroute.
The vehicle he was riding in was following another when the trailer on the
first truck broke loose. In attempting to dodge the trailer, the driver of the
truck in which the Lenox youth was riding, went off the road and upset.
Two
other Lenox men, Leonard Matheny and Rick Nelson were also in the truck at the
time of the accident as well as other army personnel. They received
cuts
and bruises.
Obituary
Robert
Eugene Huber, son of Duane E. and Thelma Day Huber was born December 17th, 1947
in Creston, Iowa and departed this life August 25th, 1967 near
Paynesville,
Minnesota at the age of nineteen years, nine mo. and eight days.
He
attended the Lenox Community School graduating in the :class of 1966. Since
then he has been on active duty with the National Guard and employed by
the
Tote Systems of this city.
He
leaves to mourn his passing his parents, four brothers, Lewis of Des Moines,
Harold, David and Kenneth at home; a sister-in-law, Arlene and a niece,
Belinda;
also
his grandparents, Earnest and Nellie Huber of Diagonal, and Clarence Day of Braddyville, Iowa. Several aunts, uncles and cousins and a
host of friends also survive.
Funeral
services were held at the Christian Church Monday, August 28th at 2:00 p. m.,
with Rev. David Shaeffer officiating. Music was
furnished by Mrs.
Ruth Boltinghouse and Misses Connie and Kathy Reynolds.
Members
of Company A, accompanied by their Divisional Chaplain, Lt. Col. Arthur C. Mansiton, of Glenwood, Iowa, attended the Memorial Services
in a body and presented the honored and traditional military rites at title
graveside consisting of presenting the folded Flag which, draped the casket, to
the surviving parents, a gun salute and 'Taps.' The Colors of the local
Parkinson American Legion Post were posted along with the Colors of Company A,
of the National Guard.
Bearers
were Gary Shepherd, Mike Cheese, Steve John, George Ahnen, LaVern Briggs, and Leonard Matheny.
Burial was in North Fairview cemetery.

Key, 84, former Lenox resident, died Monday at his home in Rosetown,
Saskatchewan, Canada.
Services
will be held today (Thursday) at 12 p. m. from the Bender Funeral Home, with
burial in the Lenox cemetery.
Survivors
include two sisters, Mrs. Bill Terry and Mrs. Jim Elmer, both of Lenox.

Memorial
Services for Mr. Oscar Key were held at Bender's Funeral Home on Thursday,
September 28, 2:00 P. M. Rev David A. Shaeffer,
minister of the Lenox Christian Church, officiated.
Mrs.
Howard Sturm was pianist and Garland Fickess,
soloist. Interment was in the Lenox Fairview Cemetery.
Oscar
Henry Key, son of A. S. and Mary Grubb Key, was born on April 30, 1883 near
Lenox, Iowa, and departed this life on September 25, 1967, at Kindersley,
Saskatchewan,
Canada, at the age of 84 yrs., 4 months, and 25 days.
Mr.
Key received his schooling in the country schools of Taylor County, Iowa.
As a
youth of 17 years, he made his confession of faith in the Blue Grove Christian
Church.
He
was united in marriage to Ethel Mae Sturm at Corning, Iowa, on Dec. 21, 1905.
They lived on a farm in Taylor County until 1918, at which time they moved to
Fiske, Saskatewan, Canada, where they bought a farm
and resided there until the death of Mrs. Key in 1958. Due to failing health,
he later sold the farm, and purchased a home in Kindedsely during 1963. He had been hospitalized for several months prior to his death.
Mr.
Key was preceded in death by his father and mother, three sisters and three
brothers, 4 half sisters, and 4 half brothers.
Surviving
relatives are: his step-mother, Mrs. Sara Key, Lenox; four half-sisters and
half-brother and they are as follows: Mrs. Eunice Eller, Lenox, Mrs. Bill
(Mary) Terry, Mrs. Russell (Lydia) Reynolds and Mrs. Asa (Battle) Tackett, Clarinda, half-brother, Lloyd Key, Blockton,
and a host of other relatives and friends.
Mr.
Key will be greatly missed by his family and wide circle of friends.
Bearers
were Cleo Sturm, Ralph Fulk, Homer Miller, Kenneth
Lock, Denton Kidney and Howard Sturm.
Music
was furnished by June Sturm and Garland Fickess.

Mrs.
Ike Lucas, long-time resident of Lenox, died Monday at the home of her
daughter, Mrs. Homer O'Connell in Corning.
Isabel
Jane Harrison, daughter of Samuel and Sarah Holgate Harrison, was born August
8, 1885 and passed away August 21, 1967, in the home of her daughter
and
son-in-law, Nellie and Homer O'Connell, at the age of 82 years and 13 days.
She
was married August 8, 1906, to Ike Lucas, and they were able to celebrate their
golden wedding anniversary together 11 years ago.
To
this union four children were born: Nellie (Mrs. Homer O'Connell) of Coming;
Mae (Mrs. Porter Hunter), of Corning; Crissie (Mrs. Howard
Pepper) of Lenox, and Tip of Lenox.
She
was preceded in death by her husband, parents, three sisters, Lizzie Brokaw,
Kate Harrison and Rilla Riley, one brother, John
Harrison and one grandson,
David
Pepper. She is survived by her children, three sons-in-law, a daughter-in-law,
8 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, one sister, Maggie McIlravy of Corning, two sisters-in-law, Nellie Cain of Corning, and Lillian Lucas of
Bedford, nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral
services were conducted from the Bender Funeral Home in Lenox at 2:00 p .m.,
Wednesday afternoon, August 23rd, with Rev. David Shaeffer,
pastor of the Christian Church, officiating.
Music
was furnished by Adena Boltinghouse.
Bearers
were Roy Martin, Earl Lillie, Delman Brown, Orville
Rogers, Reldon Ambrose and Clarence Olson.
Burial was in the Fairview cemetery.
Lenox
Time Table, Lenox, Iowa Thursday August 24, 1967
Daryl Lyddon, farmer living southwest of Clearfield, died
at the Iowa Lutheran hospital in Des Moines Thursday night, August 24th
following a heart attack. Mr. Lyddon was 54 years
of age.
He
was a member of the Lions Club, and had been helping run the shuttle bus
service at the Iowa state Fair that day. He suffered a heart attack after he
had
eaten
supper and was taken to the hospital.
Survivors
include his widow, Helen; three daughters, Mrs. Cheryl Schild of Iowa City and Janice and Sherilee Lyddon at home; a son, John at home; his mother, Mrs; Flora Lyddon of Clearfield;
five brothers, Don Lyddon of Diagonal, Dale of
Minneapolis, Minn., Bernard of Iowa City, Ivan of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and
Doyle of Phoenix, Arizona. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Neva Lightner of Ottumwa.
Funeral
services were held at 2 p. m. Sunday at the Clearfield Methodist church with
Rev. Edward Tschetter, pastor, officiating.
Burial was in the Clearfield cemetery.

Donald
E. Taylor, 26, of Wiota, was killed when the pickup
truck he was driving went off highway 148, Friday morning, September 8th.
Taylor,
employed by the Highway Surfacers, Inc., on the
rebuilding of highway 49 north of town, was thrown out of the pickup.
