Kilby, Leslie James -

Leslie James Kilby, eldest son of William J. and Frances L. Kilby, was born at Lenox, Iowa on August 5, 1893, and died at Concord, California on Dec. 13, 1950 at the age of 57 years, 4 months and 8 days. On November 10th he suffered a severe heart attack and was taken to the hospital in Concord where he remained until his death.

He was united in marriage October 27, 1915 to Mayme Severn and to this union eight children were born, four daughters and four sons.

The early years of his life were spent on a farm southwest of Lenox until he came to Lenox with his family, where he lived for the most part of his life until he moved in 1943 with his wife and two youngest sons to Concord, California. There he was engaged in defense work during World War II. Later he was employed as deputy sheriff of a Clayton county institution.

At the age of 15 he united with the Christian Church at Lenox and later transferred his membership to the Concord Christian Church.

His father, and one brother, Glen, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife and eight children: Mrs. Pearl Teraberry of Grinnell, Iowa; Mrs. Marjorie Cecil of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Mrs. Luclle Marshall of Kelseyvllle, California; Mrs. Mary Hetz of San Diego, California; William J., of Grinnell, Iowa; Robert of Atlantic, Iowa; Kenneth and Richard of Concord, California: also his mother, Mrs. W. J. Kilby and four sisters, Mae, Ruth, Vera and Bernice all of Lenox ten grandchildren and many friends.

He will be remembered by those who knew him as kind and loving to his family, accepting life as it was with patience and understanding and as a loyal friend ever ready to lend a helping hand when needed.

Wilburt Clint Kimball, son of Rufus and Sarah Kimball, was born November 6, 1864, in Hancock county, Illinois, and passed away May 7, 1950 at his home in Mount Ayr Iowa. He was united in marriage to Nettie Price in 1891, and to this union were born 12 children— Bessie Guthrie, Floy Watts, Lawrence Kimball and Ernest

King, Mina A -

Mrs. Roy King, 66, of Blockton, died at the Methodist hospital

in St. Joseph, Mo., Sunday.  She had lived in the Blockton community all her life and was a member of a family of eight children.

Funeral services were held at the Christian church in Blockton

at 2 p. m. Wednesday, Rev. George Swan, pastor, officiating.

Burial in the Blockton cemetery.

Surviving ;are her husband, a daughter in Council Bluffs, a son, Eldon, of Blockton, and a daughter, Donna, at home. One son preceded her in death.

Larsen, John M. -

Funeral services will Thursday at 2 p. m. at the Presbyterian church of Bedford for John M. Larsen, 53, Ford dealer there. Mr. Larsen fell dead Monday morning after playing a game of billiards at a recreation parlor at Bedford.  Active in civic affairs, he was past president of the Bedford Lion's club and a leader in other community affairs.

Survivors include his wife, a son Jack, associated with his

father in business; a daughter, Mrs. Earl Sorenson of Ames, Iowa, and three grandchildren.

Leach, Mary Adelaide StametsMame

Mrs. Mame Leach, 70, passed away at her home here on Tuesday at 1:15 p. m. She had suffered with asthma for several years and had just recently had an attack.

Funeral services will be held this afternoon (Thursday) at the United Presbyterian church with the Barber Funeral Home in charge. Rev. Earl Moneymaker will officiate. Interment in Fairview cemetery.

She was born on a farm west of Lenox, where her parents had settled and made their home on prairie land, coming here from Ohio. She had made her home in the Lenox vicinity all her life.

Mrs. Leach was a member of the Blue Grove church and had attended church at Prairie Star for a number of years before

transferring her membership to the Presbyterian church in Lenox. She was a good friend and neighbor.

Her husband, Charles Leach preceded her in death four years ago on December 18th. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Myrtle Ford; two son, Harvey and Harry, four grandchildren, all of Lenox; two

brothers, Frank Stamets, who made his home with her, and Melvin Stamets of Lenox; four sisters, Mrs. Ella Leeper and Mrs. Allie Tisdale of Vernon British Columbia; Mrs. Maud Burke, Salem, Oregon, and Mrs. Beulah Johnson of Lenox.

Leach, Mary Adelaide StametsMame” -

Mary Adelaide (better known as Mame) Stamets, daughter of John and Hulda Stamets, was born March 28th, 1880 and passed away at her home in Lenox, January 9th, 1951 at the age of 70 years, 10 months and 2 days.

She was born and reared west of Lenox, and at an early age united with the Blue Grove Christian church. She later transferred her membership to the Lenox Presbyterian church of which church she was a member at the time of her death.

On January 3rd, 1900 she was united in marriage to Charles Leach, living her entire life in Lenox and vicinity.  To this union three children were born, Myrtle, Harvey and Harry, all of Lenox.

Preceding her in death were her husband and two granddaughters, Barbara Ann and Carole Leach.  She leaves to mourn her passing

her three children and four grandchildren. Peggy Hansheer, Jim and Mary Ann Ford and Mary Ellen Leach; two brothers, Frank and Melvin Stamets of Lenox; four sisters, Beulah Johnson of Lenox, Ella Leeper and Addie Tisdale of Vernon, B. C., and Maude Burke of Salem, Oregon.

She was a wonderful wife and mother and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Funeral services were held at the United Presbyterian church Tuesday afternoon January 11 at 2 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. Earl Moneymaker. Interment in Fairview cemetery at Lenox cemetery.

Lemon, Josephine Clute –

Mrs. John (Josephine) Lemon, age 89, passed away Tuesday at Wagoner, Okla. at the home of her sister, Mrs. Addie Clute Jones.  She had been ill and confined to her bed for over a year.  Mrs. Lemon was a sister of Fred Clute.  Mr. and Mrs.  Clute will be unable to attend funeral services to be held at Wagoner today (Thursday) due to Mrs. Clute’s health.

Lillie, Bernice Leota Mulica Carlson Pegg -

Mrs. John Lillie, 47, the former Bernice Pegg, died at her home near Brooks on Sunday at 12:30 a. m. Survivors include her husband, John, and three sons, Billie and Tommy Pegg at home and Franklin Carlson of Centralia, Wash.

Funeral services Wednesday, at 2 p. m. at the Ivyville church

southwest of Corning with interment in Prairie Rose cemetery

Lillie, Bernice Leota Mulica Carlson Pegg -

Bernice Leota Mulica, daughter of Charles E. and Addle Mulica, was born November 21, 1902, in Creston and passed away Monday, March 13, 1950, at 12:40 A. M. at the age of 47 years 3 months and 20 days.

On April 2, 1921 she was united in marriage to Flay Carlson

of Fontanelle. Two children were born to this union, Frank Carlson, now of Centralia, Wash., and Betty (now Mrs. Steele) of Gridley, California. Later she was united in marriage to John Pegg of Lenox.

Three children were born to this union. One daughter, who died in infancy, and two sons, Tommy and Bill. Mr. Pegg passed away in March, 1944, at Lenox.

On July 3, 1946 she was united in marriage to John Lillie of Brooks, where they made their home on the farm. The major portion of her life was spent in Lenox, Iowa.

She joined the Methodist Church at Creston when: a girl and later moved her membership to Lenox. She was a good help in the music at Ivyville. Mrs. Lillie was a member of the Rebecah Lodge of Lenox

and also a member of the Flower Club of Brooks.

Preceding her in death were her parents, one sister Georgie,

husband John Pegg and an infant daughter Joan.

Surviving are her husband, John Lillie of Brooks, three sons, Bill and Tommy Pegg at home and Frank Carlson of Centralia, Wash. and one daughter, Betty Steele of Gridley, Calif., one sister, Ray Dean

Mulica of Moline, Ill., and a brother, Ray Mulica of Moline, Ill.  a step-son and his wife, Yale Lillie of Clearfield, a number of nieces and nephews and grandchildren.

Mrs. Lillie was of a radiant personality, a loving mother and faithful wife and will be greatly missed by her loved ones and friends.

Lourie, Alice Bestor Riggle

Mrs Alice Bestor Lourie died Monday at the home of her

son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Otis DeVoll at Sanborn.

Funeral services were held today (Thursday) from the Crew Funeral Home at Clearfield, with interment in the Bestor family lot here. Mrs. Lourie was a former Lenox resident, having lived here until

her marriage. She lived in Clearfield until moving to Sanborn

several years ago to remain with her daughter following the death of Mr. Lourie.

Alice Bestor eldest child of Dryden and Anna Brown Bestor, was born April 20. 1873 at New Windsor. Ill.  and passed away at Sanborn, Iowa, February 5 1951 at the age of 77 years, 9 months and 16 days.

In 1878 the family came to Iowa and settled on a farm in Ringgold county east of Lenox When she was 12 they moved into Lenox and she grew up and received her schooling there.  She was employed several years in the Lenox post office and later taught in rural schools. 

September 2, 1896, she was united in marriage to Grant Riggle. They made their home first in Prescott, Iowa, then at Big Stone City, S. D. and Madelia, Minn. Mr. Riggle passed away there in 1904. Two children were born to them, Walter who died in 1918 and Bernice,

Mrs. Otis De Voll of Sanborn, Iowa.

On June 5, 1927 she was united in marriage to Ed. M. Lourie of Clearfield, Iowa. They lived east of Clearfield until his death on May 8, 1947, when she went to Sanburn to make her home with her daughter and husband. Mrs. Lourie had been ailing in health for many years; the last five years of her life she had been confined

to her home.

She was a member of the Methodist church, having joined the church at Lenox in her girlhood and had been active in church work as long as her health would permit. She was affiliated with the Royal Neighbors belonging to the Clearfield camp while she lived there.

Also for a number of years she was a member and active worker

in the W. C. T. U.

Surviving are her daughter Mrs. DeVoll, four grandchildren, six great grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Clara Phillips of Seattle, Wash. Besides her son, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Walter Bestor and Perry H. Bestor.

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon in the Crew Funeral Home  at Clearfield with Rev. C. E. McPherson in charge. Music was by Mrs. Walter Owen, who sang "The Beautiful Garden of Prayer" and 'Abide With Me" accompanied by Mrs. Mahoney. Casket bearers

were Fred Barrans of Lenox, J.D. Barrans, Horace Nelson Frank Ewalt, Merrill Bailey and Fred Stoaks of Clearfield.  Burial was in the Bestor family lot in Fairview cemetery at Lenox

Lyddon, John Forrest –

John Forrest Lyddon, younger son of Frank and Alice Riley

Lyddon, was born in Taylor county near Conway, Iowa, on

September 11, 1899, and departed this life at Chicago, Illinois,

June 2, 1950, aged 50 years, 8 months and 22 days. He was

taken to Sunday School at four weeks of age, and gave his heart to Christ in youth, uniting with the Greenwood Methodist church near his home.

After graduating from Conway high school, he completed  his training at the Capitol City Commercial college in Des Moines, and has held many influential positions in the business world. Chicago being his home in recent years.

June 14, 1922, at the Methodist parsonage at Bedford, Iowa, he

was married to Miss Dorothy Herschberg, who survives him.

One daughter, Shirley Skapura, and two grandchildren, Bryan and Toby Ann, all of Chicago, besides his mother Alice Lyddon, and brother Raymond and family, both of Clearfield, Iowa, remain to mourn his departure, his father having passed away in 1931.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, June 4th at 2:00 P. M.

at the Crew Funeral Home. Clergyman: Rev. C. E. McPherson.

Casket bearers were Guy Reynolds, Harold Knox, Fred Bruner, Ray Buchanan, Lee Leply and Lowell Shawler.

Interment was to the family plot in Lenox.

Maple, Harley -

Harley Maple, 72, died on Saturday, December 30,[1950] at 7 p. m.

at the Armstrong Nursing Home in Bedford. The only survivor

is one brother, Lester Maple, at Seward, Neb. He had lived in the

vicinity more than 30 years ago, and was a retired fanner and

gardener.

Marks, Emma J. –

Emma J. Marks was born on Jan. 3, 1857, and passed away in Santa Maria, Calif., on April 19, 1950 at the age of 93 years, 3 months and 16 days.

Graveside services were held in Lenox at 2 P. M. on Wednesday,

April 26, and she was laid to rest beside her husband and son, who had preceded her in death a number of years ago. Rev. Merwin Coad of the Lenox Church of Christ officiated, and the Arnold Funeral Home was in charge.

Mrs. Marks, who was a former Lenox resident, is survived by four daughters, 12 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren. She was a cousin of Mrs. Mary Orr of Lenox.

McCloud, William Lee -

William Lee McCloud was born in Virginia on July 19, 1874 and departed from this life on June 19, 1950 at his home in Van Nuys, California, at the age of 75 years and 11 months.

When a small child he moved with his parents to Adams county, Iowa, where he lived until 1938. His long hours of labor in his early youth helped his parents to keep a family of eight children together in the home.

On December 25, 1900 he was united in marriage to Mary Ann

McCormick. To this union were born four children: Verne, of

Montibello, California; Grace Riley of Corning, Iowa; Dale of

San Gabriel, California; and Deane of Pacific Palisades, California.

The family lived for many years on a farm north of Lenox, Iowa. It was here that home was home with all the children and here that the wife and mother passed away on September 9, 1930. Missing his loving companion of the years, life became much more difficult and

in January, 1938, Mr. McCloud moved with his youngest son to

California, where the other two sons  reside.

Mr. McCloud joined the Christian church early in life and Sunday found him with his wife and young family in Sunday School and Church. He was a kind and loving companion and father and no sacrifice was too great if it was for the good of his family. He was a man of fine character and was always interested in any plan that was for the betterment of the community in which he lived.

In 1940 he was again married and during his declining years

and last illnesses he was blessed with the love and care of a devoted

companion. During the three months of his last illness he was cared for in his home where his loved ones did all that was humanly possible to relieve his pain and suffering. Now God has taken him from this earth to be at rest and peace in his heavenly home.

McDonald, Howard -

Howard McDonald, 62, a former Union county treasurer, died at 4:30 p. m. August 1, at the Greater Community hospital in Creston. His home was in Cromwell where he had lived most of his life except for periods in Creston while serving as county treasurer and deputy

county treasurer.

Funeral services were held at the Congregational church in

Cromwell at 2 p. m. Thursday. Rev. Myron E. Hayes, pastor of the First Methodist church in Creston, officiated Burial in the Cromwell cemetery.

OBITUARY

Howard McDonald was born in Gray county, Kans., Sept. 21, 1887. He was the son of William W. and Martha Knox McDonald. He was a farmer in the Cromwell vicinity most of his life.

Mr. McDonald served as treasurer of Union county in 1933 and 1934 and also served a deputy county treasurer for number of years. He was secretary of the Cromwell consolidated school district and of the Cromwell Telephone company for many years.

He was married at Cromwell Sept. 28, 1910, to Vira Purvlance,

who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Gwendolyn

Bayles of Creston and Mrs. Maxine Teply of Lenox, a son William McDonald of Omaha, Neb.; three grandchildren, Cheryl Bayles, Gale McDonald and Shirley Teply; and a sister, Mrs. Eva Rhodes of Cromwell,

McMahon, Jane -

Msgr. W. J. McMahon received word Thursday of the death of

his mother, Mrs. Jane McMahon, age 68, who had passed away the day before at her home in Listowel, Ireland. Funeral services were held there en Friday. Mrs. McMahon was the mother of ten children, and is also survived by her husband.

Due to ill health, Msgr. McMahon had made a visit to his home from December 1948 until April of 1949, which proves comforting at this time. A sister, who resides in South Africa, was also unable to attend

last rites for her mother.

Mrs.  McMahon had just sat down to breakfast, when she suffered a stroke and passed away shortly thereafter. A number of priests from this country, who are making the Holy Year Pilgrimage to Rome had visited in the McMahon home in Ireland, and also attended the services for Mrs. McMahon.

McManus, James -

James McManus, 69, died at Greater Community hospital at

Creston, Thursday morning. He had suffered a stroke. Funeral service were held at St. Patrick’s Catholic church here at 9:30 A. M. Saturday with Rev. Adam Reisz officiating. Burial was In St. Patrick’s

cemetery.

Mr. McManus, who had never married, lived with his brother-in-

law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Vanderpluym, nine miles

southeast of Lenox. Surviving in  addition to his sister, Mrs. Vattderpluym, are two brothers; Tom of Lenox and Mike of near Diagonal.

McNeese, Clara E. -

Mrs. Rollie McNeese, 63, of  near Bedford, died Sunday afternoon

when the auto in which she was riding struck loose gravel and

overturned one mile west of there. An investigation was scheduled

to determine whether Mrs McNeese, died of injuries in the

accident or of a heart attack.  The 1941 Ford was driven by

Mr. McNeese, farmer, who suffered shock. Jim Parsons, 77, uncle of Mrs. McNeese, was seriously injured and was taken to a hospital in

Maryville, Mo.  Mrs. McNeese is survived by her husband, a son and a daughter.

Menoher, Benjamin  Franklin

Mrs. Lillie Menoher received word, Friday from Lincoln, Neb.

that her brother-in-law, B. F. Menoher, had passed away there that same morning. He was 88 years of age at the time of death. Funeral services were held Monday in Lincoln with interment in Pleasant View cemetery there beside his wife, who preceded him in, death just eight months ago.

Surviving are two daughters, Ruth Menoher, who cared for her parents in their declining years, and Mrs. Grace Bollieu of Cedar Falls, three grandchildren and other relatives and friends. Mr. Menoher had lived in Taylor county for many years, and had many friends here.

Menoher, Mrs. B. F.-

Mrs. Lillie Menoher received a telegram Monday telling her of

the death of her sister-in-law Mrs B. F. Menoher at Lincoln, Nebr.  Funeral services to be held Wednesday.  She is survived by her husband, who is known to some of our old residents.

Mrs. Menoher leaves to mourn her husband, and two daughters, Miss Ruth Menoher of Lincoln and Mrs. Lloyd Bolieu of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and two grandchildren, Merry and Jimmy Bolieu.   Mrs. Bolieu is the former Grace Menoher, who taught in the Lenox school.

Miller, Nora Reynolds “Imogene” –

Nora “ Imogene “ Miller, daughter of Perry James and Nora Elizabeth (Mason) Reynolds, was born on July 16, 1916 in Carbon, Iowa. Imogene entered eternal rest on Monday, May 2, 2011 at the Lenox Care Center in Lenox, Iowa at the age of ninety-four years, nine months and sixteen days.


As the eighth child of eleven, Imogene grew up in Nodaway and graduated from Nodaway High School. Following high school, Imogene was united in marriage to Glen A. Miller of Corning on June 6, 1937 at the Parsonage in Nodaway, Iowa. Two children were born to bless this union: Larry and Linda.


The couple made their home in rural Corning where Imogene obtained her Nurses Aide Certificate. She worked for Rosary Hospital and Colonial Manor for twelve years. The remainder of her life she spent as a homemaker. The couple enjoyed camping and wintering in Florida for many years. Imogene supported Glen and his endeavors for several years while Glen owned the Chevrolet dealership in Corning.


Imogene was a member of the Happy Hollow Country Club, Avid Square Dancers and First Presbyterian Church in Corning. Throughout the years Imogene volunteered at the Thrift Shop, the Red Cross Blood Bank and Rosary Hospital.


Left to cherish Imogene’s memory are her children: son, Larry Miller (Annabelle Wood) of Corning, IA; daughter, Linda Miller and special friend, Claudette Clunan of Marshfield, MA; final surviving sister-in-law, Marjorie Reynolds of Lenox, IA; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.


Imogene was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Glen in 1999; granddaughter, Kim Lewis; special friend, Dick Cook in 2011; daughter-in-law, Donna Miller in 2000; six brothers and four sisters.

Morey, Russell H. –

Russell H. Morey, son of Wilson and Margaret A. Huff Morey, was born in Washington county, Iowa, January 13, 1873, and departed this life in Seymour, Iowa, March 20, 1951, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Watson Beatty, with whom he was visiting.  He had reached the age of 78 years, 2 months and 7 days.

In 1876 the parents brought their family to Ringgold county,

settling on a farm east of Clearfield. Their children received their education in the public schools. Upon growing to manhood, Russell decided upon farming as his chosen occupation.

On Nov. 22, 1896, he was united in marriage to Miss Belle Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Smith south of Clearfield and they established a home nearby. To this union were born four sons, Harry D. of Diagonal, V. Eugene Dwight A.  and Russell L. of Clearfield and two daughters, Bernice Beatty of Seymour and Avis A,

Alexander of Gravity.  The wife and mother passed away March 23, 1923.

In March, 1926, he was married to Mrs. Sadie Yarjaw of Lenox.  The lived near Clearfield until they moved to New Virginia, Iowa in 1942, where they have since resided.

Mr. Morey was a consistent member of the United Presbyterian

church. In home life he was a devoted husband and father.

He took a keen interest on his own occupation as well as in the affairs of his community Being of a cheerful disposition and showing a friendly attitude toward all, made for Mr. Morey many friends with

whom he liked to visit and recall events of interest of former days.

Besides his wife, the four sons and two daughters to cherish his memory are 22 grand children and seven great grandchildren, a sister Iva Parslow of Clearfield and a brother, Clyde Morey of Sumner, Wash, a step-son Dale Yaryaw besides other relatives

and a host of friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents, four brothers, Will

Ray, George and Ott and three sisters, Bertha, Leota and Myrtle.

Funeral services were held at the United Presbyterian church

on March 23 with burial in the Clearfield cemetery.

Morford, Francis M. -

Francis M. Morford, about 33 years old, died suddenly at his

home at Winfield, Kansas, Monday morning at 8 a. m., according

to word received by Wayne Henrich of Cromwell, a former

neighbor.  Mr. Morford was a former resident of the Kent

community but left there about four or five years ago. He had

been a farmer while there but was employed by the city government

at Winfield. His death followed a heart attack. Funeral services will be will be held at Winfield Thursday afternoon.

Burial will be there. Surviving are his widow Helen and a daughter, Virginia, 8½ years old.  – Creston News Advertiser.

Funeral services were held at Maryville, Mo., for Mrs. E. O.

Morin, 66, on Monday at 2 p. m. with Rev. Earl Moneymaker officiating.  Mrs. Morin, who died at her home in Seattle, Wash.,

on Tuesday was the mother-in-law of Rev. Moneymaker's

daughter, Elizabeth. Mrs. Morin and the Moneymakers were former Missouri residents.

Morris, Myrtie Shively –

Myrtie Shively, daughter of Michael and Sarah Shively, was born at Morgantown, W. Va., on Aug. 20, 1873 and passed away at her home in Lenox, Iowa, Sept. 2, 1950, at the age of 77 years and 13 days.

She was united in marriage to Ezekiel H. Morris on Oct. 26, 1893.  To this union five children were born: Blake, Hazel, Claude, Geneva and Benitha.  Hazel preceded her mother in death in 1901.

In the spring of 1894, they moved to a farm in Union county, Iowa, where they resided until 1943 when they moved to Lenox.  When a young girl, Mrs. Morris united with the Christian church at Dall’s Run, W. Va.  After coming to Iowa she transferred her membership to the church at Kent, where she was a charter member and later she transferred her membership to the united Presbyterian church in Lenox.

She leaves to mourn her loss, her husband, four children, 11 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Frances Snively Sanders of Lenox, a brother, M. C. Snively of Medicine Lake, Minn. and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held at the United Presbyterian church on Monday afternoon, Sept. 4, at two o’clock in charge of the Rev. Earl Moneymaker.  Interment in the Lenox cemetery.

Murphy, Frank -

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p. m. Wednesday for Frank

Murphy, who died at his home in Prescott, Sunday. The services

were held at the Methodist church. Mr. Murphy was a former

resident of Adair county.

Surviving are his widow, who has been in ill health during the

winter; a daughter, Mrs. Wilbur Harlow of Brooks; and two

sons, Allen Murphy of Campbell, Minn. and Mitchell M. Murphy Sr. of Greenfield.

Nabb, J. T. –

Mrs. Lloyd Wood received word last week of the death of her father, J. T. Nabb, at Alliance, Neb. The deceased was 94 years of age.
