Burge, Floyd –

Floyd Burge, 67, died Thursday [Sept 12] at 2 pm at his home near Conway after suffering a stroke.  He was a veteran of World War I.  Survivors: his wife, Leah, 1 sister, Mrs. Orda Hess of Conway and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Bessie Smith of Lenox.

 

Funeral services were Sunday afternoon at the Methodist Church in Conway. Interment in the Lexington Cemetery near Bedford.

Burge, Leah Litteer -

Mrs Leah Burge, 65, died at 1 pm Monday at the Creston hospital.  She had entered the hospital Oct. 21.

 

Funeral services were held today, Thursday, at 2 pm at the Methodist Church in Conway, the Rev Howard DeVore officiating.  Burial will be in the Lexington Cemetery near Bedford.

 

Survivors include two sisters, Mrs Bess Smith of Lenox and Mrs Mae Spurling of Rapid City, S. Dak., a brother, Jack Litteer of Kansas City, Mo. and a number and nieces and nephews.  Her husband, Floyd died Sept. 12 of this year.

 

They had lived many years on a farm near Conway.  After his death Mrs Burge had purchased a home in Lenox and her family moved her household goods here Tuesday.

Chadwick, Jean Rebecca Allen -

Mrs Fred Chadwick, 70, died suddenly Thursday at her home

southwest of Lenox, Surviving are her husband, two daughters

and two grandchildren. Funeral services were Saturday afternoon at the Bender Funeral Home with the Rev Robert Duckett officiating. Burial was in the Lenox cemetery.

Obituary

Jean Rebbeca Chadwick, daughter of John and Eliza Allen was born in Prescott, Iowa, May 28, 1887. She received her schooling at Prescott. On January 31, 1906 she was united in marriage to Fred Chadwick.

 

To this union were born 4 children, one boy and three girls. One boy and girl died in infancy. She is survived by two daughters, Ethel Faye and Betty Jean.

 

Mrs Chadwick lived much of her life near Prescott in Adams County. The family moved to the vicinity of Lenox about 16 years ago.

 

She united with the Christian church at Prescott when 13 years old. Indicative of her Christian Spirit, she spent her last day of her life with her church friends. The church played a very important role in her life. God blessed this family and community with a loving heart who will be dearly missed.

Coons, Lloyd A.

Mr and Mrs A A Adolphsen accompanied by E L Adolphsen and Mrs Harry Hansen of Arispe went to Columbus, Kans. on Sunday after receiving word of the death of their nephew Lloyd A. Coons.  Lloyd had visited Lenox many times.  At the time he was a salesman for Bennetts.

 

Mr Ed Bruce of Sterling, Colo. joined the group in their return home on Wednesday.

Cooper, Mary Jane Hargin –

Mrs Ed (Mary Jane) Cooper, 69, died early Monday morning at the home of her daughter Mrs Melvin Wurster in Mt. Ayr.  Residents of Lenox, Mr and Mrs Cooper had been with their daughter for a time while they had not been well.

 

Funeral services are being held Wednesday Nov. 20 at the Methodist Church in Lenox, the Rev B C Collier officiating.  Burial was in the Conway Cemetery.

 

Survivors include her husband, the daughter, Dorothy, two sons, Dale of Conway and Donald of Minnesota and a brother, Ed Hargin of Lenox.

Cooper, Mary Jane Hargin –

Mary Jane Hargin was born October 19, 1888 in Holt Township,

Taylor County. The daughter of Noble Hargin and Jessie Esplan Hargin, she was united in marriage to J. E. Cooper on February 5, 1913.

 

She lived with her husband on a farm south of town until moving to Lenox in January of 1956.

 

Preceding her in death were her father and mother, 6 brothers and one sister. A brother, Ed Hargin, of Lenox, survives.

 

Also remaining to mourn her passing are her husband and their four children: Donald of Bingham Lake, Minn., Dorothy (Mrs Melvin Wurster) of Mt Ayr, Daryl of Dunlap, Dale of Conway and 11 grandchildren.

 

Mrs Cooper was a charter member of the Greenwood Ladies Aid Society of the old Greenwood Methodist Church; a member of the Lenox American Legion Auxiliary; and a member of the Clearfield Methodist Church.

 

Death came at 1 a. m. Monday, Nov 18 at the home of her daughter in Mt Ayr at the age of 69 years, 29 days.

 

Funeral services were at the Lenox Methodist Church Nov 20, the Rev B. C. Collier officiating.  Burial was in the Conway Cemetery.

Dahlberg, Floyd Harrison –

Funeral services are being held this afternoon, Thursday, at the high school gymnasium for Floyd Dahlberg, 69, who died at his home Monday evening about 7 o’clock.  Mr. Dahlberg was a victim of leukemia and had been seriously ill for several weeks.

 

He had been able to prepare the gymnasium for the opening of school, but was unable to be active since then. He has been custodian of the building and equipment for 30 years.

 

Surviving are his widow Carrie who assisted him in his work, three daughters, Mrs Robert Reynolds of Kansas City, Mrs Lowell Bush and Mrs Mark Pershin of Lenox, also four sister, Mrs Lena Wright of Brooks, Mrs Esther Peak of Creston, Mrs Louise Clem of Kent and Mrs Ruth Brown of Los Angeles, Calif.

 

Mr Dahlberg was respected by the students and people of the community as a conscientious worker.  Actually his work went far beyond custody of the gymnasium.  He helped the coaches clean and care for athletic equipment and assisted students in finding their often scattered belongings.

 

For his birthday, which was Sept 30, he received more than 500 cards. Among many other remembrances was a gift from this year's football squad and coaches.

Ginn, Grover C. -

Grover C. Ginn was born on a farm southeast of Conway on

Aug 28, 1883 and passed away in Rosary Hospital in Corning

on Oct 19, 1957 at the age of 74 years, 1 month and 21 days.

 

He was united in marriage to Flora E. Beckett of Sharpsburg

on Feb 9, 1910. To this union two daughters were born: Irene Elizabeth Cerny of Lone Tree, Iowa and Grace Catherine Kiesling of

Cedar Falls, Iowa who with his wife survive; also three grand-children, John, Steven and Carolyn Kiesling. He is also survived

by three sisters: Grace Beckett of Gravity, Blanche Wilson of Arcata, Calif., Ethus Parsons, Hiawatha, Kan. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, two brothers and three sisters.

 

After his marriage he engaged in farming until 1930 when he became an employee of Taylor County until he retired in 1954. He resided in and around Conway all his life and held several civic offices and was Mayor of Conway for a number of years. He was a faithful member of the Methodist church and of the Masonic Fraternity.  He was always interested in community and governmental affairs and will be greatly missed by a host of

relatives and friends.

 

Burial services were in the Conway Methodist church on Oct 22 with Rev Howard DeVore in charge and Masonic services were held at the grave.

Haley, Charlie -

Charlie Haley, father of Mrs Ray Guess passed away this past week. He was at the home of his daughter, Mrs Bud Powers at Kellerton. He had been in ill health for some time. Funeral services were held at Kellerton on Sunday.

Harshaw, Effie Bladon -

Funeral services for Mrs Effie Harshaw, long time resident of

Clearfield Community, were held here last week. She passed

away at O'Dell Nursing home where she had been a patient 3 months.

 

The daughter of Mr and Mrs John Bladon, Effie was born near Terra Haute, Ill., August 29, 1876. With her parents, she came to Iowa in 1893 and located on a farm northeast of Clearfield. She was united in marriage to Hugh Harshaw on November 11, 1899. To this union two sons were born, Floyd who died in infancy and Fred, with whom she made her home for many years. She was a member of the Methodist church of Clearfield.

 

Survivors include her son Fred and wife Mary, 2 sisters-in-law Mrs Anna Bladon and Mrs Hattie Bladon of Clearfield as well as a host of nieces and nephews.

Hughes, Electa –

Mrs. Electa Hughes was born March 15, 1862 and passed away at her home in San Diego, California Oct. 20, 1957 at the age of 75 years, seven months.

 

Mrs. Hughes will be remembered in Lenox as the wife of Mrs. Will Hughes who died in 1938.  Shortly after his death she moved to San Diego.

 

In 1948 Mrs. Hughes suffered a fractured hip.  She recovered and was able to be very active in her home and the Central Christian Church of which she was the oldest member.  On Oct. 17 she fell and broke the other hip.  She sank into a coma after and the end came Oct. 20.

 

Those left to mourn her loss are her son Wayne L Boyles and his wife Anna; a daughter Mrs Ida Johnson and her husband Edwin, three grandchildren, Calvin C Johnson of Japan, Floyd S Boyles and wife Vivienne of San Diego, Everett Dickson and wife Gladys, six great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.

 

Services were at Merkley-Austin Mortuary and burial in Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Jacobson, Mrs. J. J. -

Arthur Calvin and his son started for Tulsa, Okla Friday to attend services for Mrs. J J Jacobson, 75, who died there Thursday at 8:30 pm at the hospital at Tulsa.  Services were Saturday at Tulsa with burial there.

 

Survivors: her husband J J, daughter Mrs. D K Chamberlin and 1 grandson, both of Lenox, 2 brothers, 3 sisters.  Mrs. Art Calvin had been with her the past 2 weeks.

Keith, Emma Pearl Nolin -

Mrs John Keith died Tuesday afternoon at a Red Oak Nursing home. She was 76 years old.  Funeral services will be Friday at the Christian Church at 2 p. m., the Rev Duckett officiating. Burial will be at Walnut Grove cemetery at Corning. The body is at Benders' Funeral Home.

 

Survivors are her husband John: one daughter, Ola Warner

of Moorhead, Minn.; three sons, Frank of Red Oak, Lee of

Burlington and Albert of California; also several grandchildren.

Keith, Emma Pearl Nolin -

Emma Pearl Nolin, daughter of Marcus and Mary Nolin was

born July 20, 1881 and died at the Ellis Nursing Home in Red

Oak, Sept 24, 1957 at the age of 76 years, two months and four

days.

 

She was married to John Keith Aug 31, 1899 and they have made their home in Lenox for the past 44 years.

 

Mrs Keith is survived by her husband, one daughter Ola Warner of Moorhead, Minn., three sons Albert of San Francisco, Calif.. Frank of Red Oak, and Lee of Burlington, six grandchildren, thirteen great

grandchildren and one sister Mrs Fay Keith of Raton, New Mexico One son, Ross Milo preceded her in death.

 

Mrs Keith has been an active member of the Church of Christ of

Lenox for many years.

 

Funeral services were held in the Church of Christ on Sept 27, 1957 with Rev Robert Duckett officiating. Burial was at Walnut Grove cemetery, Corning.

Keller, Bessie Mae Cooper Rood –

Bessie Mae Cooper, born June 3, 1883 on her parents farm near Conway and departed this life at her home in Clearfield Oct. 22, 1957.  She attended Taylor County public schools and was a graduate of Clearfield high school.

 

On Feb. 22, 1905 she was united in marriage to Geo W. Rood.  To this union 3 children were born, Wayne, Alan and Lyle.  Her husband Geo. passed away Dec. 13, 1913; also youngest son Lyle on Oct. 14, 1914.

 

On Nov. 5, 1927 she was united in marriage to Adam Keller.  They would have been married 30 years in November.

 

She was a member of Greenwood Methodist Church until it closed.  She transferred to Clearfield Methodist Church.  She was an active member in church until health failed.  For many years she led the choir and was a member of WSCS, Loyal Neighbors Club and American Legion Auxiliary.

 

She is survived by her husband, brother, Edward Cooper of Lenox, 6 children, 16 grandchildren and a host of friends and relatives.

Kinser, Beatrice –

Mrs Beatrice Kinser, 70 years old, died at her home in Jackson, Miss.  Her body was brought here and graveside services were held Monday before interment in Lenox Cemetery.  Mrs. Kinser and her late husband, Merinda were former residents of Lenox.  A daughter, Mrs Clark of Jackson survives.

Lock, Emma Louise Clark –

Emma Louise Clark was born at Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on Sept 4, 1866 and passed away at the Greater Community Hospital in Creston on Nov 5, 1957 at the age of 91 years, 2 months and 1 day.

When a small child she moved with her parents to a farm near Malta, Ia. where she grew to womanhood, attended school in Malta and helping her parents care for a large family.

 

She was married in Malta on Oct. 12, 1885 to James R. Lock and lived on a farm there until the fall of 1885 when they moved to the Lenox vicinity residing there and near Kent until they moved to Lenox which they called their permanent home.  Her husband passed away in April of 1940.

 

They were parents of 5 children: George of DeKalb, Ill., Roy H of Mason City, Ray E, a twin of Roy who was killed by lightning on June 21, 1900 and Frank and Russell of Creston.

 

Surviving are her 4 sons, Geo., Frank, Roy and Russell, 4 sisters, Mrs. Clara Forguer, Mrs Anna George, Mrs Rose Elvins, and Mrs Ella Moreland all of Creston and 1 brother, William Clark of Kent, together with 4 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and a host of neighbors and friends.

 

She was a member of the Methodist Church in Lenox and always attended services when she was able.  She was also a very generous person always doing whatever she could to help her friends and neighbors.

 

She continued to live alone in her home in Lenox after the death of her husband until she moved to a convalescent home in Creston.

 

Her passing will leave a vacant spot in the hearts of her many friends.  May she now rest in peace.

Masters, Nellie Irene -

Nellie  Irene Masters, the daughter of John Masters and Elizabeth

West Smith Masters was born near Yates City, Ill. on August 30, 1867.

 

She came to Iowa with her parents in 1869, living in and around Lenox until moving to Butler, Mo. twenty-five years ago. In ill health the last two years, she has stayed with her sister here in Lenox since last November.

 

Preceding her in death in addition to her mother and father were

two brothers and three sisters. Those left to mourn her passing include two sisters: Mrs Zetta Wilt of Lenox, und Mrs Ella Cade of New Market; her son, Orrie J Masters, of Butler, Mo.; a grandson, Darwin and his wife, and two great granddaughters, two nephews and one niece.

 

She was baptized and first became a member of the Methodist Church in Lenox.  At the time of her death she was a member of the Methodist church at Butler, Mo.

 

Death came on Thursday morning, Juno 6, at the home of her sister in Lenox, at the age of 89 years, 9 months and 6 days.  Funeral services were June 8 at Bender Funeral Home.  Burial was in Lenox Cemetery.

Owens, Nellie H. Knox -

Mrs Clyde Owens, 71, a life long resident of Clearfield passed away Wednesday morning, Sept 24 at the Des Moines General Hospital following a short illness.

 

Born as Nellie H Knox on a farm west of Clearfield May 11, 1886, she was the daughter of John and Etta Knox.

 

She attended the rural school on the home farm. On January 29, 1913 she was united in marriage to Clyde Owens at her home. They established their home three-fourths of a mile north of the Knox homestead where she spent the remainder of her life. Three sons blessed this union: Myron K of Georges Mills, N. H.; Eldon J of Claremont, N. H.; and Paul R of Ipswich, Mass.

 

Early in her life she united with the Greenwood Methodist Church and later transferred to the Clearfield Methodist where she was a lifelong leader in all departments, president of the Women’s Society for several years, Sunday school Superintendent and Teacher.

 

She was known as Aunt Nellie to the whole community and her home was always open to new comers, ministers and teachers where she delighted in being a friend to those new in the community, and those without family ties.

 

Besides her husband she is survived by her 3 sons and their wives, two sisters, Mrs. Blanche Bruner and Clara Knox and three brothers, Bert, Howard and John Knox and one Aunt Mabel Baker all of Clearfield and a host of other relatives and friends.

 

She was preceded in death by one sister, Mrs. Dora Harvey in November of 1915.  Memorial services were conducted by the

pastor Rev Howard F Ball at the Methodist Church assisted by 3 former pastors, Rev 0 B McPherson of Ainsworth, Iowa, Rev M O McKenzie of Grand Junction, and Rev C M Rowe of Grant, Iowa. Burial was in the Clearfield Cemetery.

Randecker, John Frederick –

John Randecker, 79 years old, died at his home Saturday evening about 7 o’clock.  Funeral services were Tuesday afternoon Nov. 5 at Bender Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev Burton C Collier.

 

Interment was in the Lenox Cemetery.

 

John Frederick Randecker, the son of Mr and Mrs Henry Randecker was born on a farm near Lenox on Sept. 23, 1878.

 

A farmer, he lived a single life until his marriage to Esther Enza Scott of Evanston, Ill. on April 14, 1955.  He had retired from farm work about a year before his marriage.

 

His wife remains to mourn his passing.  John was the last of his family, being preceded in death by his mother and father and two brothers, William and George.

 

Death came on Saturday Nov 2, at his home in Lenox at the age of 79 years, 1 month and 9 days.

Riggle, Albert Alvirus -

Albert Alvirus, son of David and Elizabeth Riggle, was born May 2,1877 in Linn County, Iowa and departed this life Sept 18, 1957. He was the last of nine children. When a small boy he moved to Corning with his mother and father where he grew to manhood.

 

On March 8, 1896 he was united in marriage to Charlotte Allen. To this union six children were born.

 

He is survived by his beloved and ever faithful wife and five

children: Glen Riggle of Sharpsburg, Edith Murren of Clarinda,

Mabel Ridenour, of Vermillion, S. Dak., Dollie Schowalter of

Creston and Viola Brown of Clearfield; 17grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren.

 

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Edna.  When he was a young man he joined the Methodist Church at Lenox, later moving his membership to Prescott.

Rogers, Flora Beck –

Mrs Flora Rogers, 64, of Leon, died at the Leon hospital, Thursday evening. She had lived in Lenox until about 25 ago.

 

Survivors are her husband, Robert; 2 brothers, Adolph Beck, and Henry Beck, both of Lenox; a sister, Mrs Rosa Baker of Clearfield.

 

Funeral services were Sunday at the Stuart Funeral Home in Leon. Burial was in the Lenox cemetery. Graveside services were held about 3 p.m.

Rogers, Flora Beck –

Flora Lula, daughter of John and Katharine Beck, was born at Lenox, Iowa May 24, 1903, and passed from this life at the Leon Hospital Nov 21, 1957, at the age of 54 years, 5 months and 28 days.

 

She grew to womanhood in and near Lenox.

 

She was united in marriage to Robert R. Rogers Oct 8, 1932 and moved to a farm near Garden Grove where they have lived for 25 years.

 

In 1915 she united with the Calvary Methodist Church, later transferring her membership to Garden Grove Methodist Church. She was a member of the Eastern Star at Garden Grove.

 

She leaves to mourn her departure her devoted husband, two brothers Adolph and Henry of Lenox, one sister Rosa Baker

of Clearfield, many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister Lena Wurster, two brothers William and Charles, two sisters and two brothers who passed away in infancy.

 

She was loved by all who knew her. Much of her life was spent doing for others.

 

Services were held from the Stewart Funeral Home at Leon Sunday, Nov 24. Rev Max Hall of Garden Grove officiated and the final resting place is in the Lenox Cemetery.

Shawler, Milton Wiard -

Milton Wiard Shawler, son of Chilon and Harriett Shawler was born April 19, 1874 in Warren County, Illinois.  He departed this life Nov. 8, 1957 at the age of 83 years and 7 months.  He passed away at the Greater Community Hospital in Creston where he was a patient following an accident involving hip injuries.  He moved to Iowa with his parents at the age of 18 months and had lived in the Clearfield community for the greater part of his life.

 

On Jan. 8, 1902 he was united in marriage to May Porter.  They were parents of six children: Glen and Gail, both of Denver, Colo.; Beryl of Des Moines, Bert of Lenox, Reva Ripperger of Afton and Donald of Creston. 

 

Mr Shawler was a member of the Calvary Church until it disbanded.  Later he attended the Clearfield Methodist Church.

 

He is survived by his wife, May, six children, sixteen grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, one brother, Lowell of Clearfield, one sister, Minnie Woods of Blockton and many relative and friends.  His parents, a brother, Ollie and one granddaughter preceded him in death.  He was a devoted and loving father and husband; always thoughtful of his family.

 

Funeral services were held in the Methodist Church in Clearfield Sunday Nov. 10 at 2 o’clock.  The Rev Kenneth Dalley, minister of the United Presbyterian Church officiated.  Music was furnished by Walter Owens, Darl Bell, Ralph Keller and Bob McMath.  Organist was Joan Owens.

 

Casket bearers were John Brown, Cecil Maharry, Bert Routh, John Borland, Fred Bruner and Ray Speer.  Burial was in the Clearfield Cemetery.

Weller, Smith –

Fred Weller received word that his brother, Smith, 57, died Nov. 23 at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Ga.  The body was brought to Bedford and burial was to be in Graceland.

Welry, Frank Marion -

Frank Marion Welty, son of Madcellus and Minerva Welty, was born in Jerico Springs, Mo., on April 21, 1896, and passed away from this life July 31, 1957 at the age of 61 years, 3 months and 10 days.

 

At an early age be moved to Arcadia, Kansas.

 

In 1918 he answered the call of his country to serve in the armed forces for 18 months during World War I. During his young life he worked in the coal mines at Adel. He also farmed in Nebraska.  Before returning to Iowa two years ago he worked for 8 years in the oil fields in Long Beach.

 

May 1, 1955 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Berdice Wilson who survives him.  He is also survived by 5 children by a former marriage: Archie Welty, Burney, Cal., Mrs. Evelyn Kelly, Frontenac, Kansas, Betty Welty, Garden Grove, Cal., Mrs. Vada Woolverton, Long Beach, Calif., Bob Welty, West Sacramento, Cal.  There are also 9 grandchildren, 3 sisters and 1 brother, Mrs. Tom Garrett, Neosho, Mo., Mrs. Lawrence Simpson, Parsons, Kan., Charles O’Dell, Arcadia, Kan.

 

Funeral services were held at the Bender Funeral Home Aug. 3, conducted by Rev. Robert Duckett of the Christian Church.  Burial was in the Fairview Cemetery at Lenox with military services.

Wood, James L. –

Jim Wood of Des Moines, a former resident of Lenox, died early Tuesday morning at Iowa City.  The body is at Bender Funeral Home.  Tentative funeral plans are for Saturday at 2 pm at the Funeral Home.  The deceased was a cousin of Lloyd Wood.

 

James L Wood, son of William and Clara Wood was born at Lenox, Iowa on August 25, 1897.  Following his early years on the farm, he was married to Elsie Marie Key in 1913. To this union was born a daughter, Bernita.

 

In 1918 the family moved to Idaho where he could be near his parents. His wife passed away in 1922. He continued to live in Idaho making a home for his daughter and parents until his parents passed away. He returned to the vicinity of Lenox in 1949 and moved to Des

Moines in 1953 where he and his daughter have made their home since. He and his daughter have been together since his wife passed away and this is the first time that they have been separated.

 

He was preceded in death by his wife, his mother and father, one brother, and one sister. He is survived by one daughter, Bernita Wood, and one brother Bert Wood.

 

Mr Wood died Sept 16 at an Iowa City hospital. Funeral services

were Sept 21 at Bender Funeral Home, Rev Robt Duckett officiating. Burial was in the Lenox Cemetery.

Zvolanek, John –

Funeral services for John Zvolanek who died in Corning, Iowa Friday, Sept. 27, where held Monday Sept. 30 from the Schlers-Zajicek Funeral Home in Wilber, Nebr.

 

Born in Saline, Co., Nebr. Dec. 4, 1892, he was the son of Frank and Frances Zvolanek.

 

He farmed near Wilber until 1940 when he moved to Lenox, Iowa to live with his brother, Anton.

 

His survivors include four sisters, Mrs. Julia Smisek of Dewitt, Mrs. Mary Smisek and Mrs. Emma Smejdir of Creston, Iowa and Mrs. Alice Jurica of Lincoln and four brothers, Anton of Lenox, Fred and Edward of Lincoln and Joe of Wilber.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Frank.

 

Services were conducted by Rev. Ervin E. Mindt with a song service by Milo Chaloupka accompanied by Mrs. Glenn [?].

 

Burial was in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery near Dorchester, Neb.
